Modular techno obsessive and dark pop connoisseur: Julia Bondar’s fourth studio album Bonding sounds like nothing else you’ll hear this year.     

Julia Bondar is a Ukrainian born, Barcelona based electronic music artist, singer, and songwriter. Her journey as a musician started when she was making demos for Endorphin.es modular synthesizers to help her partner, Andreas Zhukovsky, to promote and develop freshly engineered modules for his Endorphine.es brand.  Bondar soon became a co-founder of the brand and moved the company from Kiev, to Barcelona, where her obsession with modular synthesis truly took root. 

Prior to Bonding, Bondar has released three albums, the latest of which was 2020’s Industrial Symphony LP which demonstrated her innate ability to extract orchestral sounds from synthetic equipment. A blend of techno rhythms and dark pop, it paid tribute to Bondar’s idea of a modern industrial symphony, employing the powerful and unique characteristics of analog machines while also being harmoniously linked to the pleasant, danceable, and hypnotic atmosphere of industrial rhythms: themes that are explored further on this new album. 

Across nine distinct and engrossing tracks on Bonding, Bondar blends and plays with genre, from industrial, techno, electro, avant-garde pop, dark wave and more. Danceable and melodic, often moody and sinister, sometimes euphorically melancholic, she puts a unique stamp on every track she produces, giving the album a traceable through-line despite its myriad and often disparate influences and tones.  

Album opener Ruby Red sets the tone in dynamic fashion: a pummelling techno thumper that gives way to two further full on industrial techno bangers in Pleasure & Pain and Flamboyant – visceral, no-holds-barred cuts that see Bondar fully cut lose with her driving, highly energetic modular programming.  

From there the album drifts into perhaps its most self-reflective moment, with the intro to La neige et ses messes noires. This arresting track was made as a love-letter to French electro in collaboration with Maman Küsters, a French duo formed by Gaël Loison and Cyril Pansal, with Pansal penning the lyrics to Bondar’s music and Loison producing. This love of dark French electro is further explored on Obey: a haunting, mid-tempo slice of crushing electronica that simply demands your attention. 

The title track offers a brief respite from the intensity of the previous tracks, offering a space to move your body in a tribal, hypnotic dance. Antisocial is about embrace your true self, explored by a broken beat pattern and sidewinding synth lines that ebbd and flows between crushed drums and ethereal pads, and the broken beat structure is continued on the closing track In Flame: a gorgeous, expansive redemption offering the listener space to reflect. 

An arresting, beguiling listen from start to finish, Bonding is a call for emotional transformation, with Bondar evoking different states and feelings: starting from superficial but reaching to the deepest corner of your mind. This album is designed as a conversation between Bondar and her audience through the music and track names, a call for reflection and conscious approach to listening.

Twisted branches and overgrown plants blocked their way at every turn but they still moved rapidly through the jungle with effortless ease. They knew these parts like the back of their hand, every inch of river and growth, up to the trees that towered overhead. It was the only way you could survive, one wrong turn and you’d be in trouble, it was the nature of the jungle.

To round off the year Hanzo and Yaman’s Belly Dance Services are ushering out one more record to see us through the holidays. Set for release on Christmas Eve, the EP is a fresh co-production journey from Central American producers Fabio Me Llaman Soltero and Odia, who come together for ‘Demoladora de Bestias’.

Backed up by two remixes from Indonesian producer DJ Aditya Permana and Belly Dance services co-founder Hanzo, the four originals and two reworks marry spellbinding rhythms, hypnotic percussion and ritualistic samples, navigating both slower tempos and vibrations custom-made for the floor.

Paris-based electronic music producer Gewaltem, a highly sensitive introvert, grew up in a catalyst musical environment, later conducive to his intellectual and personal growth. A fertile soil, consequently for the development of a musical meaning built on synesthetic processes where his cognitive and interpretive skills deliver Gewaltem a unique perception of the outside world. Between intimate wistful diary and sound experimentation, Gewaltem's music is an interesting paradox where the quest for blue and nocturnal anxieties rub shoulders, where opulent soundscapes lead to a romantic shuddering atmosphere, perceived as the only way to dodge the routine, express, understand, and overcome overwhelming feelings.

Tenebrous frenchman Jon Beige (formerly known as Beige) strikes back with his 3rd release, and once again creates his own genres that we’re going to define here as ghettowave or leftfield-core. Melting high-tech soundscapes, hypnotic synths and broken drums, his heavily synthetic universe spreads into 5 new tracks. Here’s a few words about them, including comments from the producer himself.

Distorsion Naturelle de l’Auto Radio is a straight-in-the-face kind of entrance. This arid and distorted urban jam puts you straight in the heart of Jon Beige’s dystopian Gotham paradise « I often imagine it as a laser tag game that would turn wrong ».  

On Palo Santo, Jon Beige is going dancehall. Using the genre’s symptomatic drum pattern, he navigates between club-friendly and meditative moods in a tensed yet balanced journey. « That’s the track I think is the most finished of the EP, but all the tracks match together in a not-fully-calculated way ».Hydrocution is a funk ballad, like a mysterious forest walk surrounded by disturbing but harmless creatures that are taking you to a bright glade, where you will finally stumble into the master of the place. « I often struggle to produce something simple with just a few elements – this track is the first time I succeeded. »

Isolat is a smooth and psychedelic sci-fi trip, unexpected and always moving forward « I imagined a little robot lost in a city suburb, wondering what he was doing there. Mood is kinda Spike Jonze’s ‘’Da Funk’’ but with a robot ».

The EP closes in a very noir scene, heavy rain, melancholia and cold blooded crimes : Déjeuner Sous l’Herbe won’t let you rest in peace. « This track, my oldest on this EP, was made in 2014. I’m still really into the solo in the end ».  

The artwork is designed and imagined by Belgrade-based artist and producer Stevie Whisper, aka the hands behind Yes and Mystic Stylez.
The record will be released as a ziplock package that includes a USB stick with the WAV files and exclusive club remixes + a limited edition poster + some cool stickers.

Releasing Jon Beige since his earliest work, Global Warming Records is run by french producer and talent seeker Malcolm, who imagines and shapes each project hand in hand with his artists. Friendly Surveillance will be the label’s 12th release.
