Exclusive: Bawrut & Benjamin Fröhlich - Kirmes

The Permanent Vacation head Benjamin Fröhlich and Ransom Note regular Bawrut joined forces for their upcoming track Kirmes, which is part of AEON's V/A Versus Vol. 1 – an EP consisting out of collaborative tracks only. Shortly before the release of their fair-project the two scene mainstays digitally met up to chat about the (non) changing daily routines, how deeply they've been involved with music lately but also share some insights on what they've struggled with over the time of the pandemic, future approaches to life and music, reflect on the scene in general, how they miss playing in front of people and – a bit – about their track Kirmes. Latter unites the best of both artist's worlds, an intriguing break-esque baseline, pointed chords paired with a whiff of edgy weirdness and spare vocals to add an accentuated different note over a few bars before fully focusing on the track's melodic frame.

Cornelius Doctor's (@corneliusdoctor) remix of 'Whispering' strips back the guitars and staccato synth lines, opting instead for softer oriental style pads and drones, textures and percussion for a slowed yet bouncy and vibrant remix. His style sits at the convergence of cosmic, discoid and wavy sounds, with percussion, dark synths, psyche voices, breaks and bells as some of his best weapons. Since starting his Hard Fist label in 2016, Cornelius Doctor has been an advocate for an uninhibited and expressive approach to dance music, opening club music to world sounds and bringing back the essence of dancing together ritually.

French artist Justine Forever joins the Human Endeavour family for the sixth release on the Ransom Note Records’ sub-label. 

Having made appearances on imprints like Ombra Internatonal, Lumière Noire, Her Majesty’s Ship and her own newly minted Club Forever label, this fresh body of work, ‘Out Of The Blue’, continues her pursuit to connect the dots between cold wave, punk and the uninhibited abandonment of dark, sweaty dance floors. 

The Rome-based producer - real name Justine Neulat - ushers us into the shadows with three propulsive, tripped-out cuts, each one more intoxicating than the last.

‘Klaus’ kicks things off, bringing an air of mystery from the get-go. Metallic synths, courtesy of Justine’s trusty MS20, glide over a ghostly ambience, which soon gives way to a crawling bass line and mystifying vocals.

‘My Blood’ follows and is just as hypnotic as its predecessor. The motorik beat is accented by resonant thuds of bass, snappy percussion and a woozy synth line that puts us all under Justine’s sonic spell.

‘Out Of The Blue’ is the most club-ready of the package. Driven by a deep, rumbling bass, the track is a masterclass in musical restraint; its stripped-back structure made all the more powerful by Justine’s skilled use of atmosphere and sound FX. 

For the first time since the label’s inception last summer, Human Endeavour bring on board two remixers to round off the release, both of whom are fellow explorers of the dark, psychedelic realms of the electronic universe. 

Hand picked by Justine herself, French producer Cate Hortl and Mexican artist Undefined Pattern reinterpret ‘My Blood’ and ‘Out Of The Blue’ respectively. The former ups the tempo placing her signature cocktail of dark pop and coldwave-tinged synths centre-stage, while the latter subtly retouches the titular track, shaping it into a pounding techno stomper that’s primed for the dance.

Here we go again! The return of the Greek DJ and production duo Boys' Shorts - this time in remixed form!
»On The High Line« and »Dark Room Rendez-Vous« from their first ever release for LIVE AT ROBERT JOHNSON get the remix treatment for even more Boys' Shorts dancefloor mayhem.
First up is Romain FX with his »Pressure Remix« of »On The High Line« and the title gives a hint to Romain's approach: He indeed adds a bit more pressure stripping down the former 80ties fueled track by adding a big big bass line thus achieving a more concentrated punch in general. By keeping DJ City's beautiful cool vocals for their remix they manage to keep the same lascivious quality you find in the original version. We say: Mission accomplished.
The next ones are a real "All in"! Jason nocturne doubles his stake straight away! Two versions for you! Keep it rollin' "On The Highline", or do you like it more acidic? The choice is yours!
Former Chicago-raised and socialized DJ and producer Alinka is next with her version of »Dark Room Rendez-Vous«. We're happy the Ukrainian-born and now Berlin resident Alinka is back for LARJ twisting the knobs just the right way transforming the track into a straighter and slightly darker monster the original instrumental already is. It's a winner, thank you Alinka!
We stay with the same track but now it's Mala Ika's turn. The French producer originally from Guadeloupe throws in a deeper bass drum into her remix and holds this extra energy over the whole six minutes. Mala Ika also adds a happy little synth melody that transforms this typical dark tune into a joyous yet still dark track.
All in all these remixes can be seen as a beautiful supplement to Boys' Shorts original outing and will definitely find their way to the clubs all over the world.
