I visited Sri Lanka's Sinharaja rainforest during the monsoon season with the hope of recording some of it’s unique wildlife, but the torrential rain forced me to spend most of my time sheltering inside a lodge! However on the final morning of my stay the rain eased for a few hours and I had a brief opportunity to record the sounds you hear on this album.

With most of Java's land cleared for agriculture, the few significant areas of rainforest remaining are vital havens for native plants and wildlife.  

This recording was made in Gunung Halimun National Park in east Java, and captures the sounds of a typical morning in the beautiful montane forest.

Recorded in pinsapo (Spanish fir) forest in the Sierra de las Nieves National Park, near Ronda Spain.  The birdlife was particularly active this cool spring morning, with many species moving around close by the microphones. You can here some very light rain blow in during the second half of this sample.

Bird species recorded on this track include Tawny Owl, Eurasian Jay, Common Wood Pigeon, Iberian Green Woodpecker, Crested Tit, European Robin, Short-toed Treecreeper, Eurasian Siskin, Chaffinch, Hawfinch and  Red Crossbill.

This track features the haunting vocalizations of the Common Loon. The ambient "roar" you'll hear is the sound of gentle night breezes swishing through the treetops of large Red Pines nearby. (One critical listener calls this element "sublime.") Recorded late May, 2008. Skies were mostly clear; winds were light and variable; temp. was in the low 50s (F).

It is still dark when a single Black Grouse starts calling on a forest clearing. Morning chorus from nearby forest is getting louder as birds are joining in one by one. A Woodcock can be heard when flying over the clearing and making strange croaking sound. Other birds in the recording: European Robin, Song Thrush, Cuckoo, Song Thrush, Eurasian Nightjar. 1. May 2012, around 4:15 AM, near Koiva (Gauja) river.

Borneo Rainforest - Dawn - Gibbons

Night gently transitioning to day in the misty World Heritage Listed Gondwana rainforest amongst ancient Antarctic Beeches. On this January morning the subdued dawn light of the cloudy mountain top meant that the night shift of insects, cicadas and frogs continued well after the day shift begins at first light. For most of the year Eastern Yellow Robin leads the chorus but it is silent or absent on this morning. The frog calling is the "Pouched", "Marsupial" or "Hip-Pocket" frog, Assa darlingtonii, named for the brood pouches on the males, where the tadpoles travel to after hatching. (Thanks Jeremy).White-throated treecreeper is first followed at 4:30 by Alberts Lyrebird calling a little tentatively out of breeding season. Other species in this recording include Lewins Honeyeater, Brown Cuckoo Dove, Satin Bowerbird, Yellow-throated Scrubwren, White-Browed Scrubwren, King Parrot, Crimson Rosella, Bassian Thrush, Grey Shrike-thrush, Grey Fantail, Green Catbird, and the Eastern Whipbirds are feeding in pairs with an adult and a juvenile together. 
The recording begins 5 minutes before first light and continues till five minutes after dawn. Altitude 1140m ASL. Sennheiser MKH8020 in Iso-Binaural Stereo, SD702.
