ACCESS NRG Co-Presidents, talk passion! Their passions are; learning and speaking up and that is no surprise to This Humana Life Podcast Team. During our hour-long conversation, we could hear it, sense it, and feel it. 

Matt Kosak and Kerry Bates talks about who and what have made a big impact in their life. Kerry responds with a heartfelt perspective of her son with Autism and speaks on acceptance. Matt speaks on books and other media that has helped shape his thoughts. 

What can we do to help advocate for those with disability’s you ask? Well, let’s start with Disability Etiquette. ACCESS NRG has a Computer Based Training (CBT) course where we can learn the language. Also, do not be afraid to ask questions of these Co-Presidents as they appreciate those who ‘come from curious.’

Invisible disabilities are all around us. Do you know what one is? Would you be able to identify an invisible disability of your peer? You will hear examples that you may not be aware of. So tune in and learn more about ACCESS NRG.

Part 1 of the conversation with PRIDE Co-Presidents, Bryan Miller & Lynn Baker was fun & insightful. We talked about many topics such as mentoring, networking, culture, and what they wish they knew when they started their careers and want to pass on to others. They are a dynamic duo leading the PRIDE NRG into the future. 

We learned of Bryan’s work with Disney, which explains the forever excitement in his voice and zest for fun, and Lynn was a former exchange student exclaiming to be open to learning new things. Bryan talks about looking for the ‘cool stuff’ beyond your required work and Lynn echoes his thought saying there is always something to fix or do. Speaking of the ‘cool stuff,’ This Humana Life Podcast Team thinks Bryan and Lynn is ‘cool stuff’ and enjoyed learning from them.

Ross Lagerblade is a wealth of information and his diverse background in healthcare is fascinating.  Ross notes that he is not from a clinical environment, but he has a gift of discussing this work as if he is. From his work at the Mayo Clinic to deciding on a Friday afternoon who might qualify for a transplant; Ross' work journey is vast.  Ross put the phrase 'perfect experience' into perspective when he verbally painted pictures of moments captured with patients.  We certainly learned a different level of healthcare as it relates to episodes, transplants, and challenging end of life experiences. You will too!

Ross Lagerblade is an Associate Vice President of Value Based Strategies. Ross is a strategic leader with responsibility for managing Care Decision Insights, the medical oncology quality program, and currently leads a company strategy to reduce provider administrative burden in the prior authorization process.
 
Ross has been with Humana for 13 years in various provider-facing roles.  Prior to joining the company, he worked at the Mayo Clinic in Payor Relations, and held various roles at Cigna, Aetna, the Alexian Brothers, and the University of Missouri Hospitals and Clinics.
 
Ross holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Iowa and a Master of Health Administration degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia.

036: New Year New Name

David Best or should we call him Sergeant Major Best, is impressive!  When you listen to this podcast, you will know why!  He served for 32 years in the Army before working at Humana.  He started as a Process Consultant and is currently a Senior Talent Management Professional.  He reflects on his first weeks at Humana and how it might feel to a service member transitioning to civilian life in corporate America.  Dropping out of high school to join the army, David pressed forward to finish high school and ultimately college.  He is an advocate for education and will push his associates to reach beyond.  He is a dedicated leader for the SALUTE! NRG and directly credits SALUTE Network Resource Group for helping him have a solid second career. David is on a mission to help veteran’s bridge the gap in becoming great achievers in a corporate atmosphere.  We were honored to sit across from Sergeant Major Best and are thankful for his willingness to serve!

Jessica Clark has been with Humana for seven years.  She majored in Organizational Leadership & minored in Finance. Jessica started as a Consultant to Humana, and then was hired into a Director role at Humana.  She is currently the Vice President of Health Quality & Stars.  The Stars program is a measure for the Center for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS).  For Jessica’s team, the results of these measures will be their area of focus, and they will pivot where changes need to be made to increase the low performers.  Jessica is sharp, and she beautifully explains a complex business area in simple terms.  All we can say is, we give Jessica a ‘5-star!’

She worked as a State Manager for In Home Care Management and supported Dual Demos for 2-1/2 years. She became Program Manager for Process Improvement in 2016, before moving to her current role. Prior to working for Humana, worked at a local department of Social Services in Child Protective Services. She has a bachelor of Social Work degree and an MBA. She lives in Virginia with her husband, 95-year old mother in law, and 3 dogs.

About Kevin | Senior Talent Management Professional

Kevin Guerrero is a Professional Certified Coach credentialed through the International Coaching Federation. In his current role for the actuarial community development center, located within Humana’s Office of the Chief Actuary (OCA), he established and is managing the Actuarial Career Center. The Center was founded on development coaching and includes growth and transition opportunities for its members. Specifically, the Center most often serves the needs of emerging leaders and partners with all levels of associates in the actuarial and financial communities. Additionally, Kevin created The Humana Actuarial Podcast Series and frequently produces other media for the OCA.

Prior to joining Humana, Kevin enjoyed careers in both mental health and broadcasting, serving as Creative Services Director for television stations in his home state of Indiana. Kevin earned a Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Management from Ottawa University and is currently working toward his Master’s in Leadership and Organizational Development from the University of Texas at Dallas.  

Outside of his professional endeavors, Kevin spends time volunteering with Angels in Disguise, Southern Indiana Animal Rescue, and Best Buddies.
