ACOUSMATIC VOID

This work explores the growth and formation of a snowflake
crystal. The form of a snowflake represents uniqueness, which,
on a higher scale, translates into diversity. It all starts with the
journey of a particle through extreme atmospheric conditions.
A snowflakeʼs shape is the embodiment of its path toward the
Earth. Gravity and time enable this journey. Each snowflake
takes on a unique, individual path, as there are more
combinations of possible trajectories than there are
snowflakes. Every subtle fluctuation in pressure, humidity, and
surrounding environmental conditions contributes to how
each water molecule binds to the structure of a snowflake. The
snowflakeʼs final form encodes the memory of that journey. It
can be “read,” like all forms in nature: human bodies, rings of
tree trunks, and stretch marks on skin. A snowflake highlights
this phenomenon of “formation through journey” in its
simple-complex geometry.

QANUK-0x4603202864 is an attempt at sonifying this
process. At its core lies a crafted engine that transfers the
minute mechanics of snowflake formation into the
micro-mechanics of sound generation. The artistʼs role is to
craft that engine—one that works at a small scale (molecule =
microtone). The artist then feeds it a dynamic, parameterized
simulation of a snowflake (based on the Reiter model), which
encapsulates a unique journey in its specific parametrization.
The artist steps back to listen as the sonic form gradually
emerges—each water molecule binding to the flake enables a
microtone, eﬀectively transferring the physical form of
material into the frequency domain. The resulting sonic
output exhibits emergent phenomena: interactions and
interferences between waveforms generate auditory patterns—
“beats”—that resemble life, movement, and growth.

0x4603202864 represents just one instantiation of the crafted
QANUK engine, which can be run with live-controlled
parameterized snowflake simulation—each time producing a
unique sonic outcome.
