A. About 7 years now... time flies...

Q. Tell us a little bit about this mix.
A. I wanted to make something different this time around and put together a mix that covers different shades of house and is still high energy :) There's 22 tracks in it for the year 2022 lol. I've been trying to focus more on channelling and being immersed in joy this year and I think this mix captures that vibe.

Brooklynite @benbondy elevates ambient to a whole new level. He's done so over the course of more than 12 albums in just two years. Each one is like a dairy - a capturing of intimate feelings that translate into sensitive sounds that are subtle yet moving. He occasionally veers into downtempo and IDM, and has worked on collaborative projects like Blessed Kitty and xphresh.

This week's mix is a deep dive into his edgeless world, where half-heard vocals drift in and out, cosmic dust glistens in a shard of light and smeared pads disappear off to infinity. The hazy sounds manage to be both romantic and psychedelic, insular yet hopeful. It is ambient but stuffed with such detail and texture that it plays out with the vivid imagery of a movie in your mind rather than just a soothing sonic wallpaper. Headphones are essential for this one.

Alejandro Marenco, the shortened moniker of Nicaraguan-born, Chicago-based musician Noel Alejandro Gutierrez Marenco, makes expansive electronic grooves designed for “throwing ass.” Marenco’s music is evocative of that night, the one that feels simultaneously driftless and gigantic, one that glimmers upon remembering hours spent in a sweat-drenched, dimly-lit club, or the last dance at a dive bar down the street, or a blaring stereo during a wide-eyed 3am cross-city drive to get home. Largely creating in Ableton (and occasionally bolstered by a drum machine and Moog synth), Marenco fluidly weaves a variety of sounds from endless inspirations - Jamaican collective Equiknoxx, the latin tribal techno of Nick León, and the influential dance label Livity Sound, to name a few. Elastic beats, industrial percussion, fluid synth, oscillating rhythms, and a flourish for ever-changing instrumentation, Marenco’s mixes are reverberating moments of kaleidoscopic euphoria.

Zvrra is a multi-genre music producer and video game developer based in Chicago, Illinois. Her music explores a multitude of genres and styles ranging from techno and house, to hip hop, to tribal and industrial, often blending styles and crafting intricate concept albums.

At Unsound 2022, Bored Lord from LA and Ariel Zetina from Chicago - each other's biggest fans - teamed up for their first-ever European b2b set. The two artists masterfully fused together queer club sounds with '90s hardcore breaks, trance, and house, resulting in a hard-hitting combo that kept the audience on their toes throughout.
