Seit 2016 von der Stadt Hamburg die Polizeisondereinheit „Task Force“ nochmals aufgestockt wurde, wird die Gegend um die und an der Balduintreppe zunehmend als gefährlicher Ort inszeniert: Durch polizeiliche Dauerpräsenz, durch alltägliche rassistische verdachtsunabhängige Kontrollen und zum Teil brutale Festnahmen von Besucher*innen und Anwohner*innen des Stadtteils. Betroffen sind vor allem Schwarze Menschen und People of Colour (PoC).

Composé autour d’une conversation entre mon père et moi, capturée par hasard il y a 25 ans sur une VHS lors d’une soirée d’observation des étoiles filantes, l’album explore le souvenir, la transmission et notre rapport au temps. Il plonge l’auditeur·ice dans l’intimité du cocon familial, la naïveté de l’enfance et la tendresse d’un père face à l’infiniment grand.

Aujourd’hui, si on lève les yeux vers la constellation de la Lyre et que l’on observe son étoile la plus brillante, Alpha Lyrae, nous la voyons telle qu’elle était il y a 25 ans, au moment où je partageais cet instant de complicité avec mon père.

Built around a conversation with my father, accidentally recorded 25 years ago on a VHS during a night of stargazing, the album explores memory, transmission, and our relationship with time. It draws the listener into the warmth of family, the innocence of childhood, and a father’s tenderness before the vastness of the universe.

When we look up at the Lyra constellation today and spot its brightest star, Alpha Lyrae, we’re seeing it as it was 25 years ago, the very moment I shared that special bond with my father.

Re-embracing hope in present and past science fiction.

 A heavy dub of Nachtmusik. Admittedly the name 'New Nubia Space Station' is a bit too conceptually obvious and pretentious, but it kind of stuck. Working title was 'ambient step dub', next idea was 'Octavia Butler', name of the sci-fi novel author Octavia Butler, which in turn almost noone would understand who or what it refers to. (she is often named as the inventor of afrofuturism). 

The new name is inspired by two contemperary novels by Omar Epps & Clarence A. Haynes. 'Nubia - The Reckoning' and the follow up 'Nubia - The Awakening'. Definitely more down to earth than the 'Black Panther' franchise. Dystopic, yet entertaining and hopeful.

New Nubia Space Station

A cover version of Tipper. The very first track (our) Dave and Steve collaborated on. Like many musicians back then, we were trying to wrap our heads around wtf is this guy doing? It was not an attempt to make something new, or even better out of it. Just backwards engineering the piece as a learning experience. Listening to it beat by beat, sometimes even second by second, trying to figure out all the animal voices in the background. The first lesson: Start gathering tons of found sounds and samples from all walks of life. And beyond.
