"Once Upon A Time" is not just a song; it is part of the story of my life and that of my parents, Samir and Amina al Khalidi. Together, we have lived through moments that changed us forever, moments of loss but also survival. Following the 2015 airstrikes on Damascus, carried out by the Russian Air Force, I lost both of my younger brothers, leaving me as my parents' only child. Together with my mother, we sing this duet not just for ourselves, but for all the lost voices and for all those who still hope for a better future after the darkness of war.

We left Syria in 2020 when I was just 13 years old, leaving behind a world in ruins, but carrying with us the memories and the desire to rebuild something new. Over the years, I have watched how my parents, especially my mother, have kept their courage and dignity, despite all the challenges. My mother's voice is strong and clear because she has brought not just harmony, but also the strength to move forward, even in the hardest times. Singing with her, I want to pay tribute to everything she has done and continues to do.

Through "Once Upon A Time", I want to show the world that although we have been devastated by the past, we are capable of rising from the ashes, rebuilding our lives, and holding on to hope. The lyrics speak of the longing for home, the silent tears, and the stories that only wounded hearts can tell. But at the same time, they also speak of light, of a new day that will come, and of the strength to continue, even when everything seems lost.

When I sing with my mother, I hope the audience understands this struggle is not just individual. It is the story of many who have been forced to leave their country, of those who have lost their family, but who have not lost hope. I want this song to be an emotional refuge for those who have gone through similar experiences. I want people to feel that they are not alone and that there is a light at the end of the road, no matter how dark it may seem.

For me, "Once Upon A Time" means remembering everything we were, but also preparing for what we can become. It is about rebirth, about love, and peace. When my voice blends with my mother's, I feel that this story becomes whole. It is as if together, we can heal the wounds of the past and transform pain into hope.

This Kinda Mess

My name is Zhara Sylbrussyne al Khalidi, and I was born in Syria. I grew up in Damascus, a city that was once full of life but was torn apart by war. In 2015, after airstrikes devastated my home, my family made the difficult decision to leave. I lost both of my younger brothers during the attacks, and it became clear that staying wasn’t an option. In 2020, when I was 13, my parents and I moved to Scotland, where we’ve been rebuilding our lives ever since.

Moving to Scotland was a major shift for me:  new language, new culture, but also a chance to start over. I’ve found comfort in the landscapes and the kindness of people here, but my heart is still connected to the memories of home, even the painful ones. Scotland has given me the space to process what happened and express myself in new ways, but Syria will always be a part of me.

My experiences have shaped the way I see the world, and they’ve taught me that no matter how far we go, we carry our past with us. In everything I do, I try to honor both the life I had and the new one I’m building. For me, it’s about finding balance , between grief and hope, between what was and what can be.

More than 25 years as a rookie on my belt
Making music - in my case - is a creative exercise and something I like to do for recreational purposes, above all.
I love that anyone can take a guitar, their DAW, or whatever. Even just pen and paper, and come up with something special and unique that has never been heard or written.
This opportunity, regardless of experience and talent, to enter a universe and go places no one has set foot before, is magic. 
To draw a parallel to soccer, Im a non-league player, and would get attention for all the wrong reasons if I were thrown into a match with Salah, Haaland and the like. Still, by finding my level I can be part of an amateur team that serves a purpose in a local community, like a social meeting spot for people who like football - or don't - to come together, get into talks through a comment on a situation in the match and such. And you know what's coolest of all? Once in a while, when the sun and moon line up, I`m on a streak with my evening prayers or for some other reason have my day, I make this amazing dribble, then score a spectacular goal, becoming the local hero of the day or something. Those moments happen on all levels. Chances are perhaps even better on lower levels for this dribble to never have been seen before, since amateur football is not as controlled and professionalised as La Liga, Premier League, etc, leaving much more room for experimentation and individual creativity.
