For an artist named K A G E, this South African talent sure knows no limitations… 

Hailing from the same Cape Town beat scene as fellow bass luminaries Chee, Jon Casey and Zain Wolf, K A G E has been honing and refining his craft in the shadows for many years. 

Emerging and burgeoning on labels such as local imprint Rubricate and German genre-melting station Saturate!, K A G E’s sound has gradually morphed, mutated and ultimately blossomed across the bass spectrum from halftime beats to D&B via house, dubstep and anything else he cares to apply his emotional, mysterious, hazy signature to. 

Enigmatic, and happiest when the music and art is doing all the talking, K A G E has never done any interviews or spoken publicly about his craft, his vision or his destination. Until now…

Y’all know YAANO… And if you don’t, then now is most definitely the time to get to know.

Literally Blossoming into the scene in 2021 on Overview, then sealing the deal with a follow up EP on Critical Music's Binary series the following summer, he’s another exemplary tale of lockdown silver linings as he ploughed every bit of furlough time into what began as a mere curious interest… And has now turned into a fully fledged life obsession.

No big plans or grand designs; just a love of vibrant, springy, unbounded sonics (and levels of respect for all religious dubstep movements) that has now mutated into a strong reputation for making leftfield bass music with a wily, fizzy, instantly recognisable signature.

Unique, untamed drum arrangements, lush vocal textures and more twists and turns than an itchy snake, so far his output has been within the drum & bass realm. But as 2023 progresses we are set to experience plenty more sides to YAANO’s vision across the dancefloor landscape.

Dave Columbo Jenkins is the shiny finished product, the friendly host, the clued up interviewer, the public-facing consummate professional.... 

NODAVE is the greasy, oily engine that powers it all. Revving away behind the scenes 24/7, spuffing out toxic fumes and oil slicks everywhere.   

NODAVE is the part of my brain that keeps me up all night fizzing with ideas. He tells me everything is amazing and everything is shit, often at the same time. He wants to listen to every favourite tune and every exciting new tune he's yet to hear... All at the same time. 

NODAVE wants to do everything right at this minute without even checking if it's safe or practical. NODAVE is the fire that will never go out.

And this is how he sounds musically. 

To celebrate the fact we've hit mix number 50 since launching 1 More Thing officially last June, I've taken on this one myself. The last time I was making mixes and sharing them on forums (via CDs in the post) Soundcloud didn't even exist! 

It's sketchy, hyperactive and very wobbly in various places. I don't sync. I don't mix in key. And quite frankly it shows. But shheeesh I own some absolute bangers!

Genreless, genderless, limitless… Ghost Hardware has served up the biggest mix we’ve had so far in the 1 More Mix series. 

A wild ride that flexes creatively from 120 – 170, taking in everything from breaks to jungle, techno to grime, dubstep to house, the London artist has been waiting to put out a sonic statement like this since they first emerged as an artist four years ago in 2019. And trust us; they’ve gone IN. 

It’s a mix of Essential proportions and it resonates with everything 1 More Thing stands musically and ethically. We covered Ghost Hardware’s No Reality label quite extensively last year when it launched. A label, movement and experience that they explained at the time was inspired and motivated by “blurring the lines between realism, surrealism, light, dark, fiction and non-fiction.”

Most recently he was rose to the top of a hundreds of entries in a high profile DJ Rap remix competition where his remix of her iconic Saviour tune smashed the Beatport hype chart. 

Meanwhile in his capacity as a DJ, Plasmator’s years of skill-honing and genre-hopping have led to a masterful vibe that can cross all groove terrains in the most exciting of ways. Currently co-running a multigenre night in Plymouth called Bedlam Ball, his sets can take you on a journey like this.

From sexy breaks to scorchio D&B in less than 40 minutes, this mix has so many twists, turns and teases it will have you hooked until the very last minute. If you’ve been checking for drum & bass jungle since the 2000s then the name Social Security should definitely be familiar with you… 

First emerging around 2000-2001, brothers Moses (Child Support) and Inzajeano (Crisis Loan) Latif made a big noise with a gritty sound that would stir deep deep deeeeeep into the jungle melting pot. 

Named after the old benefits system in the UK (which pretty much anyone who came from working class background would have to rely on at points during the 80s and 90s) the community-minded duo’s sound was powerful, soulful and rolling with serious intent. It was a consistent signature throughout the 2000s and a decent chunk of the 2010s… And is now back for the 2020s. 

A defiant middle finger to the current (and scarily escalating) Cost Of Greed crisis, Social Security returns after taking a break to focus on other aspects of life, including an ongoing acting career. Now with Moses rolling solo at the helm, he continues with the work he and his brother started all those years ago. 

Fresh from dropping the hair-raising sci-fi odyssey Dimension X, last week, Social Security is ready to dish out another round of benefits for the scene at a time when we need them the most. We've hit the 140th edition of our mix series!!!! 

Say what?!?!

To mark this significant milestone we've called in some serious kindred spirits - C-Bo & Cuttah AKA Deep Tempo. 

Two music lovers who definitely come from a similar place in terms of how they support, celebrate and document the culture they love, C-Bo and Cuttah's Deep Tempo podcast has been one of the most consistent and solid platforms for dubstep and 140 related music across the board and across the generations. 

From its podcast roots their brand has grown to comprise a label, a zine, merch and a pretty intense DJ schedule. Listen to this mix and you'll hear just why they're booked for respected nights like Heavyweight and Deep Medi!
