On March 2020 the world was abruptly thrown into collective disarray. The pandemic stopped almost everything dead in its tracks. No social gatherings, self-isolation, a sense of panic and bewilderment prevailed. An industry that had become so dependent on human connection and unity, was suddenly switched off and put on pause for an unforeseeable future.It was in this climate that The Louder Than Chaos project was born, facilitated by Soma Records head honchos and Techno protagonists Slam. A collaborative project with friends, colleagues and contemporaries normally only seen at airports, or events, now brought together under a completely different set of circumstances, allowing for a purposeful connection in a time of disconnect. The focus of the project is built on a powerful mutual participation, remotely constructed over time and fully intended for holding court on peak time dance floors when they inevitably return. Each EP features specially commissioned artwork from German based artist PPP Panic, which consolidates into one constructive piece over the 5 releases.

Opening Volume 1, Slam pair with Italian rave starters 999999999 for Conveyor. Arguably one of the hardest tracks in the project, both artists combine to unleash a furious and twisted acid techno stomper. Madrid born, vinyl enthusiast Hector Oaks is next up, joining Slam on a proper, attitude filled techno excursion with Pathfinder; its heady melodic elements mask a driving and potent track. Detroit originator Optic Nerve helps Slam to close out the EP with the Motor City electronics of Machine Conflict. Early Slam influence mixes perfectly with the Detroit native’s unique electro sound.

Carbon Black opens uncompromisingly with thunderous drums, perfectly tuned to give that heavy stomping effect, continuously increasing in intensity before relenting momentarily to a subdued pad before rocketing back in, all guns blazing. Schism goes on a more industrial tip with its more mechanized feel and crashing percussion building slowly and with purpose. Short, abrupt stabs give rise to the tension that is quickly cleaved by clinical, razor-sharp percussion

Volume 3 of the Louder Than Chaos project has Slam teaming up with long term Soma affiliate, Rebekah, for another ferocious addition to the series. This double A side release kicks off with the fiery and tempestuous ‘Believe in The Night’ where shades of EBM cross with a hypnotic yet industrial backbone. On the flip, Erratic Movements has all guns blazing with a more direct and focussed approach. Harsh, sturdy rhythmic structures cascade continually as riotous, disruptive synths create the tension throughout the track.

The third track of the EP really gets straight to the point. Without further ado, the driving bass line, paired with the character-giving lead synth unmistakably represent the club-oriented approach on the project by SAMOH and LUAS. Adding a fast-paced ride sets the tone for what follows, which is a perfectly mixed selection of rhythmic elements going increasingly wild until the drop. Slowly pushing a gloomy pad into presence, the track creates an almost hypnotic feeling that will never let you leave the floor again.

VAST is a new underground techno label project from Portland-based artist Spencer Hardwick, that is set to showcase a wide range of upcoming American talent and beyond, with a focus on raw, hypnotic sounds with analogue features, modular sounds and creative visions.

Living up to its name, VAST presents 'Incoming Transmissions, Volume 1' which is no run-of-the-mill VA compilation. Each of the 11 tracks flow purposefully into the next, demonstrating the imprint's wide creative range compared to most contemporary techno labels, and welcomes a host of talent from artists around the USA, including North Carolina, Portland, Dallas, Washington DC, and Los Angeles.

Collectively the artists included have released on quality labels such as Edit Select Records, Developer's Modularz, Eduardo De La Calle's Analog Solutions, JAK's SubSensory, Luca Maniaci's Mind Games, Translate & Pulso's SRIE, Mal_Hombre's Voyager, Max Gardner's Peer, Secus' Rituals, Modern Minimal, Subsist, Crossfade Sounds, Maison Fauna, and Eklektik Elektrik, amongst others.

VAST has set out to accomplish no simple feat: to introduce something new to techno without betraying its refined aesthetic. 'Incoming Transmissions, Volume 1' is as good a start as any. It not only establishes VAST's distinctive sound signature but proves it as versatile as it is dance floor friendly.

The release has raw, hypnotic, analogue techno with gritty textures, dystopian vibes, dub influences, and modular accents.

Slam (aka Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle) are a tour de force on the global techno circuit. Their unique, six deck, back-to-back DJ performances have seen the duo play leading clubs and festivals across the world. They are renowned for both their experience and their powerful, contemporary sound. 

They are co-owners of Glasgow's Riverside Festival, and also host the legendary Maximum Pressure warehouse parties, which showcase the best emerging local talent alongside some of the most established names in international techno.

Their iconic Soma Records label boasts in excess of 600 releases, hosting Mcmillan and Meikle's own productions and many of today's most cutting-edge techno artists.

The last few years have seen some of the duo's most prolific studio output as they continue to innovate and keep things moving forward, most recently with the release of their experimental full length record Athenæum 101. In addition, Slam have also remixed tracks from the likes of Planetary Assault Systems, Clouds, Dax J, Damon Wild, Richie Hawtin, and Truncate, to name just a few. 

Slam also host one of Techno's most respected weekly podcasts, Slam Radio, which has now surpassed over 400 episodes. The show allows the duo to demonstrate their conviction to creating and promoting music and vibes that provide an antidote to the mainstream by inviting fellow artists from the vibrant Techno scene, from obscure names to current trailblazers.
