This song is made entirely out of samples from the kitchen, I used the fridge door, a clock, a coffee grinder and a sodastream machine.

A little sound miniature made in some 3 hours for Ableton's daily challenge "instruction music". 
For the drone sound I used my Akai EWI to imitate my refrigerator's hum. Everything else is based on sounds I recorded in my kitchen today. Thanks Ableton - that was fun!

Instruction Music (LoopAtHome Sunday Challenge)

Day three of Ableton #LoopAtHome and today's challenge is basically to recreate the sound of a fridge (or freezer in my case), sample some items from the kitchen and create a new track from it. And this is the result. 

For the freezer noise, I did my best approximation by humming at the same pitch. This was the same sound I used for the glassy melodic parts, although modified significantly through FX and filters. 

The percussion comes from a beer glass, followed by the sound of a beer can being opened. (I was getting thirsty!)

Once I had the basic fridge noise and rhythm, I added the three interweaving melody lines. They are actually, more or less the same part, just played at three different tempos and three octaves apart. Even if I do say so myself, the finished track gave me goosebumps.

What a fun weekend of experimentation!

Out From The Cold

Submitted as part of #LoopAtHome challenge by Ableton. I used my voice as a fridge noise replica and made the drums from the fridge opening noises. The rest of the sounds used in the track are made from a drain protector, water splashes and a glass.

Ableton Loop challange day3:  Instruction Music

The inspiration for this challenge comes from the avant-garde FLUXUS movement. Artists including Yoko Ono, Dick Higgins, Alison Knowles and George Brecht, pioneered what they called event scores – simple instructions that could be performed by anyone. The second movement of Knowles’ “Bean Piece” instructed the performer to “deliberately spill the beans”, while another by La Monte Young called for the player to “draw a straight line and follow it”. The point of these “little illuminations”, as Young called them, was to blur the barrier between art and everyday life, to demonstrate that the world – and your apartment – is already making music. Let’s call it … ‘house music’.


While my fridge did not make any sounds, instead it was having some lazy time during this Sunday morning, the only consistent sound came from my grandma’s-clock … tick-tock … … which became the tempo of this track. 

Finally, while recording me, pretending being a clock … the fridge started to make some noise. A repeatedly, humming sound with scratchy-like peaks. To imitate this sound, I used a deep tuned viola, scratching the C-String with the back of the bow in a rotating manner. … to complete this challenge, I added the fridge’s door opening sound, recorded the air pressure thing of the deep freezer while closing this door, a down cooling kettle, and of course that clock’s bells. I used EQ, Pitch, Warp and Panning

My submission for the third #loopathome challenge. Ableton gave us written instructions on what to do. I sampled all sounds in the kitchen of my studio (knive, stove, pot) - used my Zoom H4n, contact mics and hydrophones. I also used my modular to recreate the sound of the oven (that I used instead of the fridge).
