Disquiet Junto Project 0111: Acts of Commons

I love the remixes. For this one I used all 20 seconds of Madamme Cell's and 1 second of Castrillo's track to create a beat. 
The other 29 seconds of Castrillo's I faded in to use as a swelling drone through out. 
With J. Surak's track I repeated the last 6 or 7 seconds to create a drone. I then opened it in a separate audacity window, added a time track and used the envelope filter to created a sliding pitch shift effect. I also in parts used the pitch change effect to get an even lower growl. 

The picture is a collage of Surak's and Madamme Cell's album covers that I then databent with audacity.

This Reminds Me Of The Dentist (disquiet0111-actsofcommons)

After downloading and cutting out the needed parts I stated working with the sources in Borderlands, iDensity and Samplr on my iPad...transferred them back into Ableton Live for adjustment of panning, reverb and volume. Finely I decided to add the rumble: reversed and down pitched Horizontales  as well as Auto Tempo 1 .... a little mastering - done...

**Production Notes**

Honestly, it took me some time to get into the source material - I just couldnt find some interesting frequencies with the right punch. After 2 hours I had some hits, kicks and noises extracted and layed down some basic drum tracks in Ableton.

Then... no idea... no melodies... nothing came to mind. Fiddled around for another hour, then I concentrated on the sample from "Horizontales" and did some pulsating melody with Ableton Push. Pads, Bass and the rest came pretty quickly.  Mixed in a hurry (it‘s very late here and I want to go to bed.)

There were no other instruments added. Hope you like it!

Industry (disquiet0111-actsofcommons)

The rhythmic structure comes from Maddam Cell's "Auto Tempo 1" with a 4 bar sampling and loop.  Some EQ added.

The main melodic lines come from two passes of J. Surak's "Improvisation for Prepared Autoharp", both played in reverse with one at half speed and the other at quarter speed creating different pitches of the same sound sample.  Those weave and intertwine throughout. Some reverb added.

The background swells come from Juan Manuel Castrillo's "Horizontales" and serve as a thickening agent, adding more texture.

All samples were directly recorded to the Samplr app for Ipad and manipulated within.  No other sound sources were used in this track and the only changes come from added effects (EQ, some reverb, and in the "Auto Tempo 1" sample - some fuzz distortion.

Manipulator, You - [disquiet0111 - actsofcommons]

The first time I've done a Junto project since 0055, this was a fairly quick effort to try out new plugins and software. I'd recently picked up the new version 10 of Acid Music Studio, which was where I first started making sample-based music in earnest, and I'd also bought a few new plugins from the excellent Inear Display, whose work tends toward the experimental/glitch end of things.

I cropped the audio files in question to the requisite length (30 seconds of one, 10 of another, 20 of the third) and arranged them in Acid, in admittedly a rather haphazard manner but one which was intended not to give any one of the clips dominance over the others. I used six audio tracks in total, repeating each clip twice. Each had a single VST effect applied to it, all from Inear Display with the exception of one, which had Togu Audio Line's excellent (and free) DUB-III plugin applied.

The master bus had compressor, tape sim, and a couple of reverbs (including Nomad Factory's excellent COSMOS) applied, along with a couple of utilities to push the mix a little further. Overall the sound is a fairly thickly textured ambient industrial/noise piece, which seems like quite a pleasing result given the source audio.

Also, I'm deaf in one ear at the moment, so if this is really terribly balanced, that's why.

[disquiet0111-actsofcommons] Autogenetic Stratum

For the 15th Disquiet Junto, a project I've been rather inactive on for some weeks.

I used a Musical Algorithms tool from Eastern Washington University to create three MIDI files, for Red, Green and Blue respectively. I experimented with a few different algorithms but found a Fibonacci Sequence worked best in terms of length; I used 60, 54 and 45 integers respectively, and set each MIDI sequence to be at a BPM of double its integer length.

I then took the MIDI files and played them concurrently at 60bpm using instruments in Reason Essentials, though it took some experimentation to find ones that were a good fit. The result was not manipulated any further.

[disquiet0015-rgbinteract] Trichromacy

For the 16th week of the Disquiet Junto, which I left until rather too late to do anything more complicated.

I'd originally wanted to experiment with the Warp and Beat Repeat features in Ableton Live, but I was left without sufficient time to familiarise myself with the software and get a track completed -- I started only a few hours before the deadline -- and as a result decided to work with Acid again. I put this together pretty quickly, going with an industrial theme, and I have tried to keep one of the samples in the background, and one in the foreground, as per the brief; however, they may be a bit hard to recognise, as I manipulated them heavily.

Overall not amazingly happy with this, but I wanted to at least submit something rather than sit out on this week's. Loosely inspired by the work of http://soundcloud.com/margaras .

[disquiet0016-backforeground] Percussive Maintenance

For the 17th Disquiet Junto project. Again this called for a field recording, and I still lack the equipment to easily make one (recommendations for a cheap solution are welcome, however). Once again I used a piece from Ollie Hall's "Japan Recordings", as I did for http://soundcloud.com/schrodingers-dog/disquiet0005-mono-no-aware .

I layered a 30 second segment of "Akasuka Side Street" and did the same with 30 seconds of the Tag Cloud track "A Controlled Burn", leaving the first instance of the former and the last instance of the latter untouched, but manipulating the other two occurences with VST effects.

As with last week's entry, I'm not especially pleased with this. It feels again like I've turned in a quick doodle for my art homework. Maybe somebody will like it though.

[disquiet0017-transition] Pre://cursor

For the 23rd week of the Junto, I was pleased to be able to work on a drone piece as I'd not participated since week 20 (I couldn't get anywhere with #21, and although I had an idea for #22, I was completely hampered by technical difficulties).

Anyway, my process in this assignment was to select my favourite five of the provided samples, time-stretch them to roughly 3:30 each in Sound Forge, then take them into Ableton Live Intro and apply effects on each as a separate track. I then reversed the time-stretched samples and did the same thing again, although I used different effects; while this is not, perhaps, the most literal interpretation of having each half of the track be a mirror of the other, I feel it qualifies as being the reverse. (I did, briefly, experiment with making only one piece and putting it back-to-back with a reversed copy of itself, but this did not give an especially satisfactory result.)

Once this was done, I rendered out both pieces and took them into Acid Music Studio, applying some stereo expansion to each piece and some delay, reverb, and general mastering to the overall result. A fairly straightforward method, but I'm happy with the outcome.

The title, by the way, is a play on the word 'drone'; drone bees have no stings, and drone music tends to have few, if any, 'sharp' sounds.

[disquiet0023-palindrone] Stingless (Parts 1 and 2)

Having not taken part in the Junto since #23, as the projects either presented technical difficulties I couldn't resolve in time or weren't personally appealing, I was pleased to find that this one took my interest.

Given that the album which holds the two tracks of source material is described as "complex compositions based on analogue and granular synthesis", I had considered trying to create my own patches for the granular synth in Reason. As is often the case with these projects my experiments went in another direction. I started by using timestretch to shorten both "Tanku" and "Ochiita" (the latter more than the former) and brought them into Acid, beginning to experiment with layering both tracks together.

I was initially exploring a dubby ambient kind of sound, but found I was unable to give it any real depth. I thought I might have to start over, but then accidentally chose the wrong preset in an equalizer (the 'Radio' option) which started the impetus towards the noisy, distorted final result. I'd already fed both tracks through a number of VST's, including the Hardcore guitar effects rack from FL Studio. I had also included some oriental instrument samples, from guichin, pipa, and yangchin. The final major step was using the Computer Music edition of Sugar Bytes' Artillery II plugin. I'm pretty pleased with the final result, and despite the track having something of a lo-fi feel, I've actually uploaded it here as FLAC to preserve all the details.
