Oh what a time it's been...

After a small hiatus with the mix series I felt it was important to keep going with it. This beautiful healing music by Berlin based @slowfoam is exactly what the doctor ordered. Slowfoam is the cyber-atmospheric, bubblescape, synthetic pop, and ambient sound project of Madelyn Byrd

"In this mix, I wanted to drift between otherworldly realms to reassociate with the things I love most about ours. For me, some of these things include laying on the earth and pretending to merge into the blue sky, the sonic and energetic sensations of being alone in nature, or staring at a glistening river until falling into a trance. But also, having friends and loved ones I miss so much I start to giggle when I think about the fun we've had together, and then fun we'll have together again." 


Sending love via this intrinsically magical musical language, to everyone in the Animalia community.

"i ve always had a bit of a split personality between really fast,
loud or sensous bangers and all-envelopping, thick-padded, soothing
ambient. in the past i got to share my poppy obsessions du jour directly on the dancefloor back when clubs were still a thing and i was running a silly,
chaotic and very gay monthly party called saint hollywood.

with almost all of my coping mechanisms suddenly unavailable and a bunch of
writing to do, i ve spent most of the past year digging for soft, soothing sounds i can listen to over and over, especially at times when i can barely listen to music at all. 

lexi inviting me to contribute to one of my fav series has been an amazing gift and i hope this little mix does it justice <3"

Welcome on board, here's the 55th episode of the Stellar Series.

Rig Thrall is one of those artists with strong character and style, plus an eclectic and varied selection combined to solid influences. A racy techno style combining planar and tribal music but also progressive trance, breaks and marked tones from the 80s-90s.

He co-created various projects during his young life in this industry, such as @rakya-records (label & collective) in Paris or OQULT collective in Montreal (facebook.com/oqultmtl) for the most recent.

Also producer, he released two EPs, including one on his own label, and several collaborations on movie or advertising soundtracks. He is currently working on new projects which should see the daylight soon. Case to follow.

Stellar Series Episode 55 - Rig Thrall (Lost In The Movie)

RAN PARK (@ranparkmusic) is a brilliant friend, activist, and pianist/multi-instrumentalist based in Seattle, WA.

✱ What is the inspiration and vision behind RAN PARK?

RAN PARK as a project is my way of saying yes to the child in us. I'm interested in the healing properties of music -- specifically, how it grants us access into the hidden parts of our being, and how it encourages us to embody fuller expressions of the many identities we carry, even/especially the parts of ourselves that may seem contradicting. I see this sort of acknowledgment of our complexities as an important step towards healing generational trauma. Sonically, it means I welcome musical influences of all kinds. I'm exploring how those sounds intermingle with my personal history, and I'm finding delight in creating new contexts for them. 

✱ Can you share a little bit about what you’ve included in this mix? 

RAN PARK: I've included old and new experiments in composition and rhythm. Thankfully this project could house vast explorations! You'll hear passages ranging from symphonic to classical, jazz, electronic, and some trance-inducing meditations. Two composers that I'm deeply indebted to are Ennio Morricone and Ryuichi Sakamoto. There are some tracks in this mix that are unabashedly aspirational and attempt to follow the shadows of these maestros. 

Slowfoam: I've also included some unreleased Slowfoam tracks and some songs off a forthcoming EP by myself and Neilll ~ an incredible ambient/experimental multi-instrumentalist based in LA. The mix evolved into a slightly dystopic soundscape that encourages wanderings away from clamoring cities and back into the stillness of the natural world.

✱ What are some of your utopian dreams?

RAN PARK: My personal understanding of utopia is a world and existence in which our differences, shadow parts, and discomforts can be acknowledged without fear. 

Slowfoam: Mine exist tangentially to this world, but we're more closely connected to the ecosystems we take part in, as well as ourselves and each other. Similar to RAN PARK's, vulnerability, imperfection, and growth are innate and supported equitably. 

✱ Any exciting things we can look forward to from RAN PARK in 2022?

Several fruitful collaborations, including this one! With regards to my own work, expect more music beyond solo piano.

This episode feels like traversing through all stages of sleep, from vivid and almost visceral memories of holidays in a rainy tent, walks through gigantic forests and dewy fields in a valley filled with morning mist, to deep transformative loops of thoughts, dark shifting feelings and desires close but out of grasp. All to wake up to soft voices, bird shrieks perhaps on a beach.
