Memory Of Friends Dancing At A Wedding

Caged Wings is a composition written by Anna Kho, which was inspired by her honours thesis in regards to constraints within improvisational contexts in relation to music performance anxiety. The composition is a graphic score accompanied by text:

“I began music like a free bird. Floating among the clouds of creativity. Beginning to learn music, I was introduced to restriction of time and tonality. I learnt groove, and soon led by my musical friends to free expression. The more I listen, I adjust my playing and start seeing a world of freedom within restriction. One day, I want to find that moment of pure freedom. To fly like a bird again, and no longer the ‘Caged Wings’."

The world premiere was performed in Anna Kho's graduating honours recital, 'Caged Wings' at Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University, Conservatorium Theatre on 11th November, 2016. Recorded and edited by Daniel Kassulke.

Caged Wings by Anna Kho

Written for solo prepared piano, this is my version of the Cuban guaguanco rhythm, from the piece "Three Latin Rhythms". It was recorded for my album "More than my old piano" as well as Gabriella Smart's album "Chinese Whispers". It was the theme music for ABC Classic FM's coverage of the ICSM World Music Days in Sydney 2010. Gabriella Smart also recorded this for Move Records.

About the piece: Skylarkers was commissioned by Kathleen Kemp, assistant principal cellist in the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra. 

The piece is scored for one 5.0 octave marimba and five cellists, (one of the cellists also plays cajon). Sheet music for Skylarkers is available at IvanDrums.com
