Joris Feiertag is a Dutch producer and live-act from the historic and culturally rich city of Utrecht. Having signed to Sonar Kollektiv in 2018, he has released two albums on the label so far - his debut, vocal led and uplifting long-playing record Time To Recover, as well as its subsequent remixes, and last year the more sonorous and personal Dive. Before embarking on album three, and discovering whichever side of Feiertag’s multi-faceted personality and talents that will explore, Joris has taken a moment to deliver a couple of one-off pieces just to cleanse our musical palettes.

Earlier in the autumn he unleashed Kojin - a long time, visceral secret weapon in his sets that just oozes unabated energy. Now he brings us When She Leaves - still very much a dance floor record, but one with a greater sense of balance between the mind and the feet. Swirling synths and tender keys make way for nostalgic breakbeats and vocal snippets, but it soon becomes clear that there‘s some serious songwriting involved in the making of this track. Vocal hooks come to the fore and the audience is left with the feeling that they’re listening to something that might be described as ‘emotionally intelligent dance music’. It’s certainly a piece that Joris himself is looking forward to playing in his live shows.

Whether it’s life affirming vocals, more profound intimate pieces, club bangers or a little bit of everything, it’s clear that with a label as open-minded as the Berlin imprint, this restless musical soul has found the freedom he needs and also the perfect home.

We've been fans and followers of The Mole for a very long time, so we are excited to share "New Family", a sublime slice of ambient grooves that bumps somewhere between hip hop and house. 

"New Family" is taken from the album, 'The River Widens' on Circus Company.  Originally a limited cassette-only release on Eddie C's Red Motorbike, now due for release on 20 January on double vinyl, full digital release and cassette once again.

Never one to shy away from synth deep dives, or raw sample flip collaging, this collection of 21 works checks all the boxes. Ambient trippers to straight up neck-snapping instrumental beats. Not forgetting tastes of the more uptempo, highly-assured and hypnotic dance floor feels the world has come to love The Mole for. 

Moments of casual chilling are interspersed with effortless, emotive angles, some evoking the charm of his Little Sunshine release for Circus Company in 2017.

Written and mixed during the summer of 2022 in Tucson, Arizona, “Lo-Sun Season” reflects the hallucinogenic heat of an asphalt parking lot at midday, while “Smoothsayer” sounds just like pulling out of that lot for a 90 degree midnight cruise along barren cactus-studded highways. Rounding out the compact 4 trackers are remixes that give the tracks the full Dream Chimney treatment, with a breakified dreamgaze flip of Smoothsayer by labelmate Sorcerer and a balearic chug dub of Wallfacer by the Chimney's own.

Back in 2019, Leng Records offered a debut to a previously unheralded producer, Takovoi. Three years on, the Russian nu-disco specialist returns to the label with a five-track EP that displays the depth and quality of his rapidly evolving trademark sound.

The Perfect Match EP delivers a range of grooves and stylistic approaches while showcasing the producer’s love of dreamy Balearic chords, soft-touch synth sounds and colourful melodies.

He sets the tone with the EP-opening title track, ‘Perfect Match’ where sustained, sun-down chords, yearning lead lines, cascading piano motifs and twinkling electronics ride a shuffling, post-electro beat and a warm, undulating bassline. ‘Homesickness’ sees Takovoi wrap waves of rising and falling synth sounds and melancholic melodies around a deep, hypnotic nu-disco groove, while the slow-motion sensation that is ‘Dreams’ brings throbbing analogue bass, sustained piano chords, sparkling electronics and the gentlest of beats.

Takovoi’s dancefloor credentials come to the fore with ‘Bubbles’, a slowly building Balearic nu-disco gem that layers up echo-laden percussion hits, eyes-closed melodies, and drowsy synth sounds over a bustling beat that sits somewhere between deep house and TR-808-driven broken beat. 

This off-kilter approach to beat programming continues on the EP’s inspired closing cut, ‘Another The Same’, where hazy female vocal samples, immersive chords and reverb-heavy musical motifs gingerly dance on a bouncy and densely layered 4/4 beat. When the main melody makes its presence felt midway through, the track is elevated to a whole new level altogether. It’s a fittingly impressive end to Takovoi’s new EP for Leng.

Session Victim’s 5th studio album ‘low key, low pressure’ feels like an anathema to today’s fast-paced, industry driven musical landscape – and for all the right reasons!

Having released two intense, dancefloor-focused 12“s on Rhythm Section and Delusions of Grandeur over the past year, their return to Night Time Stories brings out their trippy, headsy side once again. And despite the pandemic downtime being over, Hauke & Matthias remain holed up in the studio, jamming, head nodding to drum breaks, and churning out records like the one in front of you.

Spanning 10 tunes – 12 if you count the limited bonus 7“ that comes with the first pressing – the LP is undiluted Session Victim, with their occasional trio partner Carsten ‘Erobique’ Meyer as the sole musical guest on the library-esque ‘Soft Landing’, a tune reminiscent of something the boys would try to hunt down on one of their compulsive record store rummages to feed it to their Akai’s. You’ll also find the sequel to one of their cornerstone tracks from their 2020 album Needledrop, Jazzbeat 07 - ‘Jazzbeat 08’. Having acquired a taste for the occasional cover version over the years, the duo closes the album out with their rendition of Instra:mental’s ‘Photograph’. Tackling such a classic is a daunting task which they approach in a gentle way, not swaying too far from the original, but subtly reimagining the rhythmical foundation and exchanging the distinctive playground sounds from the OG with field recordings of the locals who populate the gritty area around their Neukölln studio.

Being longtime fans of Swedish organ player Bo Hansson, Hauke and Matthias tried to reach out to the people responsible for his cover artwork who today are in their late eighties and have not answered ever since! But things came together in the most fortunate way when introduced to French artist Xavier d’espinay Saint Luc and his enchanting pencil wizardry. The outstanding result is the cover art that you see here.

This is ‘low key, low pressure’. It’s got pristine drum chops to zoom in, hazy melodies to zone out, and all the texture you need to lose yourself in the details.

Sean La’Brooy is an Australian producer and composer cur- rently based in New York, who’s work traverses ambient, jazz and house music. He is the co-founder of Australian ambient label Analogue Attic Recordings.

With this release, La’Brooy has hooked up with the Scissor and Thread label to put out Merchant - five dreamy and versatile tracks featuring his distinct style of harmonically complex pads mixed with jazz-influenced instrumental melodies and solos.
Snow Storm starts the journey, coupling field recordings with snippets of gentle jazz lines and wandering percussion.

Cargo is the most dancefloor-oriented of the release, and locks into a driving groove early on, featuring various synth and pia- no fragments to add and flow through the track.

Pilot is a track that also finds an off-kilter groove, embellished with dubbed-out percussion by fellow Australian Joseph Batrouney and samples.

Storage too features a guest - New York based drummer Leo Yucht - who delivers a rolling breakbeat which is intertwined with live percussion, airy pads and snippets of piano to build a rich atmosphere.

The closing piece is Helipad, a dubby bassline providing the anchor for an intricate rhythm of bongos and synth to support a light-as-a-feather melody.

As Sean explains, “The purpose of this record was to create five tracks that each feel unique and distinctive from each other while still maintaining a common thread that connects them all to the same place. All my favorite records have a certain distinctiveness across each track that ties them together to create a sort of family of works. I think if you can achieve that cohesion, you’ve made a great album. With Merchant, I’ve tried my hardest to establish a unique identity while featuring 5 tracks that feel totally different at the same time. Different con- cepts, genres, tempos, instrumentation, still with a red thread to connect them all. In my mind, those commonalities are defined by a particular mood or sentiment, the use of playful melodies, and a reliance on acoustic rhythms throughout”.
