HOMEMADE "PERLON" MIX - 2021

After a 1-year hiatus, the Avenue Red 1210 podcast series has a fresh installment of 12 records, each one being 10+ years old. Stepping up to the platters we have Moutier, a veteran DJ duo from Leeds who have in recent years also turned their hands to being producers and label owners. In 2017 they launched their Enclave Records imprint, which alongside their own works has featured an illustrious roster of talent, including Harrison BDP, Javonntte, Kresy, BioRoot and Niklas Andersson among others.

No strangers to the origins of true deep house, these guys have dug through an enormity of special black gold releases over the last couple of decades. Also with them having played a lot of gigs around the UK (especially in the north of England) throughout this time, they are well qualified to compile and mix something timeless and special from their collective treasure trove of records. They show their fine skills as DJ's in the way they hold that elusive dancefloor groove as they flutter through the tracks. To dance or not to dance? It is simply not an option.

"Here's 12 of our favourite cuts from that truly golden period of 1995 until just after the millennium. We purposely avoided going for something super banging, but rather just some good old fashioned deepness and gentle undulation, building towards the unreal Journeyman (an under-the-radar alias of the legendary Jean F. Cochois, better known as The Timewriter) track at the end.

A lot of these producers get somewhat overlooked when looking back at this period and perhaps, apart from true Discogs saddos like us, don't get the love from the current generation of house heads that they deserve. Julius Steinhoff and Just von Ahlefeld are Smallpeople - a dj and producing duo from Hamburg, Germany that do more than just DJ and produce. They also run the record store Smallville in their hometown and take care of a record company of the same name, releasing house music full of references to the genres rich history. For Carhartt Radio they have put together a show featuring tracks by artists such as Move D, Lowtec, STL, Lawrence, Moomin, and Steve Tang. A thrilling mix that represents the labels trademark ageless house that admires subtle, evolving melodies.

Grant was a name that often cropped up among the most talented producers of the now robust and sprawling lofi scene, that did not quite fit the mold. The music was certainly inspired by classic Chicago and Detroit movements of the 90s and early 00s, but the sounds themselves were bold, dense, and textured. Through crestfallen harmonies and cascading rhythms, the mysterious Grant hangs warehouse weapons from crystal chandeliers. Over the past four years, Grant’s compositions have dripped with elegance as they wrap clubs and headphones alike in sumptuous basslines, spectral gospel chants, and graceful hooks---and he shows no signs of stopping. 

As Grant pumps the gas on his output heading into 2019, the veil over his identity flies away revealing Anthony Collins, half of the revered Frank & Tony and co-founder of the Scissor and Thread label. Bolting Bits is proud to present a new mix from this visionary talent, accompanied by a brief Q&A to peel back a bit more on this enigmatic artist.
