Variation 18 of Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini composed in 1934. Rachmaninoff said of this piece: "This one, is for my agent." as he sensed it would become a commercial hit. It's composed by playing upside down the original melody from Paganini. The original is like a piano concerto (solo piano vs orchestra) and I'm trying to do it on a single keyboard with sampled sounds.

The theme was used in the movie Somewhere in Time in 1980 starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour.

The instrument is a Clavia Nord Stage 2 using a sampled Bösendorfer grand piano and sampled orchestra strings.

Meet Godowsky, the musical Bruce Lee. Not only does he have "God" in his last name, but he can also play Chopin's Etudes like they're child's play. In fact, he thought they were too easy, so he rewrote them and called his new work "Studies on Chopin's Etudes." These studies are like the ultimate, über-hard version of Chopin's Etudes.

For example, Godowsky took the right-hand part of an etude and gave it to the left hand. So some studies are just Chopin's Etudes played entirely with one hand while the other hand does nothing. But Godowsky didn't stop there. He thought, "If one hand can play an etude and the other hand does nothing, it could play another etude!" So he wrote double-etudes. Can you imagine playing one etude with your left hand and playing a different etude simultaneously with your right hand? It's like knitting a sweater with your right hand alone, while drawing the Mona Lisa with the other hand.

Only two pianists have recorded the entire set of 53 studies, and only a handful of others have attempted to record selected etudes. Godowsky, the musical Bruce Lee, has truly set the bar for piano difficulty.
