Stasis, foreboding (Andrew Ball)

Rush was written for Barega SQ in 2011 by Australian composer Michael Bakrnčev. The work was given it's world premiere at the World Saxophone Congress XVI 2012 (St. Andrews, Scotland). Rush is an example of Bakrnčev's highly idiomatic style, which combines uniquely Australian influences with stylistic elements of traditional music of the composer's Macedonian heritage. This recording is a preview single from Barega's upcoming (June 2015) album release - stay tuned!

Three Serpents was written in 2013 for the group by Barega's tenor saxophonist/resident composer Andrew Ball. Various elements of the work's three continuous movements are inspired by mythology and symbolism (excerpted here to include movement 1 "Hydra" and 3 "Coatlique"). Three Serpents expands the textural capabilities of the quartet - each ensemble member doubles on two saxes throughout the work. This is a live performance from the 3MBS Performer of the Year Awards at the Australian National Academy of Music.

Gypsy Trio is a fiery piece that uses Gypsy scales and syncopated rhythms. It is filled with rhapsodic virtuoso passages which help to build the work to a climactic end.

Pondside was originally composed in 1993 when Denson was studying with George Russell at the New England Conservatory. It celebrates Jamaica Pond, a much-loved landmark in the neighbourhood of Jamaica Plain in Boston. Surrounded by trees and frequented by swans and ducks, the pond was an oasis of beauty and calm in a large and violent American city. This arrangement is one of three saxophone quartet settings of compositions which date from this important period in Denson’s musical life. Young and Wandering is about a journey that doesn't travel from start to end. It is an aimless wander, enjoying the beauty in resonant sounds. The piece celebrates the timbral differences and similarities amongst the jazz quartet, in ways not often explored with these instruments.

The wonderful Flinders Quartet premiered this piece along with my other work "Exhale" in concert in Melbourne, December 2017. Originally written for the Goldner String Quartet, "The Rose that Wept" pays homage to the dark, Hans-Chrisitian-Andersen type films of my childhood.

Rising Tide is a section from my 1 hour suite for Sirens Big Band, entitled [A]part. It expresses my feelings on climate change; its sheer enormity and devastation, my fear that it is unstoppable, and heartache for our beautiful planet. This is a live recording by the ABC, from the 2017 Freedman Jazz Fellowships, in which I was a finalist. Performed by Sirens Big Band, mixed by Matthew Stuart.
