Cerebral Drive

Texas Recordings Underground, or TRU, is the brainchild of Gavin Guthrie, the talented Dallas based DJ/Producer "TX Connect". It' ll be focused solely on fellow artists from the gigantic state (2,5X the size of France...), "from the border of Mexico all the way up to the panhandle" with a wide-open music policy : "Anything from house, techno, acid, electro to ambient, funk, industrial, synth pop, etc. If it's good, it's good and you'll hear it." First outing there is a five tracker various artist. The track premiered features Gerard Hanson who has long been one of the electro scene's most notable talents. Suitably known as "Convextion" for the laymans, he has a real cult following among the experts under his "ERP" moniker, being one of the very few producers (you can count them on two hands) alongside The Exaltics, Stingray or Dopplereffekt  that manages to keep alive a style whose redundancy leaded to a certain decay.  Enjoy this beauty that should be out within few days !

Do you consider yourself a house head? If so, you know that not a day goes by where you don’t hope for new tunes from Dream 2 Science. New to this world? If so, Dream 2 Science is NYC based legend Cozmo D. Real name Ben Cenac, Cozmo is highly regarded for his role in pioneering electro group Newcleus, and he later enjoyed international success with his jazzy, garage-inclined Sha-lor project. His work as Dream 2 Science was little known outside of a hardcore circle of deep house enthusiasts until Rush Hour reissued his classic self-titled LP. Since then, Ben has been responsible for a few critically acclaimed remixes, but we’ve yet to see a new EP of tunes under the Dream 2 Science alias.

Now that the history lesson is over, let’s get to the nitty gritty. Dropping via Carry On Records on June 8th is an EP titled “True Places” by little known producer, Black Zodiac. Not much information is available about he/she/them online, but we’re glad the two tracker landed in our inbox. Both tracks prove to be excellent little slices of golden-era deep house, fitting for the warm up or come down. The a-side is a bit more shimmery, while the Dream 2 Science remix on the b-side is expectedly deep, and sexy as hell. Cozmo puts heavy focus on the main synth melody, letting it ring out over deep pads and subdued percussive elements, before stripping it away in favor of extended solos. There’s a gorgeous warmth to this track that’s completely arresting. Put simply, a track that helps to clear your mind. It certainly won’t be clearing any dancefloors.

After the stomper that was the ‘Guardian of Forever’ EP, Detroit legend Rick Wade returns to bastion of lofi house ‘Shall Not Fade’ with another four sweet and soulful deep house cuts on his new ‘Passion Play’ Ep.

B1’s Inner Most, brings the darkness of 6am club workouts straight to your ears. Trippy 909s and swelling string pads evolve into beautiful rhodes chords layered over a smooth baseline. Wade comes in with a lovely bit of piano and string work that lifts the track into the realms of the deepest ecstasy. The track is dripping with moody atmosphere and that signature Detroit sound.

The rest of the EP also captures that classic Detroit sound with A1’s title track ‘Passion Play’ bringing an uplifting chord run across some bumping drums and deft vocal work. A2 feels like the darker side of the title track, with ‘Oh Yeah’ using similar vocal, drum and harmonic elements to craft a more introspective and melancholic atmosphere.

B2’s Zero Ningen is the EP biggest departure, bringing disco congas and a chopped Japanese vocal to create a psychedelic house number, with a gentle lo-fi piano melody holding the track down. If J Dilla made house instead of Hip Hop, lived in Japan, and enjoyed the recreational use of assorted hallucinogens, maybe he’d make something that sounds a little like this.

Another great EP from the masterful Rick Wade, proving once again why Shall Not Fade is one of the strongest labels in circulation. The Passion Play EP is out digitally and on Wax July 6th.

Upbeat, high-energy house tracks don’t usually go for ten minutes. And, depending on your tastes, you might think they’d get a repetitive and draining if they were to. It’s hard to keep many styles of music fresh and engaging for that long, but London’s Michael Iwatsu has took on that challenge with impressive results.Set for a June 15 release on Burnin Music – a label native to his hometown – we’re tempted to spruik this release just for its audacity: two tracks of weird but wonderful house. The original, Fracture, is our premiere. Obviously, we recommend giving it a listen, but the Soulphiction remix on the flip-side is pretty special, too.

The original is close to what you’d expect from a quintessential dance-floor journey: long and delicate in its balance of continuity and change. No element in the track feels out of place, yet there’s a big contrast between the major melodic elements of the first and second halves, while the somewhat off-kilter percussion splashes on throughout most of the ten minutes.

Wonder Stories leads us into the summer heat with the irresistible new Cloud Nine EP from Joe Morris. The house veteran from Leeds delivers a dreamy downtempo gem in “Cloud Nine” with Balearic House titans Max Essa and Coyote adding stunning remixes before Wonder Stories boss Aimes rounds it out on the B2. Prime for any set from sunset to sunrise, “Cloud Nine” floats along with dripping chords surrounded by buzzing arpeggios and melodic pads. The 303 bassline trots along, extending itself in all the right places as the space grows and grows around it. African percussion slides in as the beat drives forward with additional drum elements added throughout. As it breaks down the track finds itself somewhat in between Todd Terje and Mood II Swing while occupying its own realm in space with the soaring synth lines and thick reverb.

Wonder Stories boss Aimes reworks “Cloud Nine” with a remix that sits well in line with the sound the Brooklyn label has built through over 25 releases since 2011. While “Cloud Nine” finds itself within the bounds of the left-field house, disco and techno prevalent on Wonder Stories so far, Aimes’ remix finds itself exploring new territory in the summertime sunshine. Maintaining the same ethereal textures of the original, Aimes instead chooses to thrust the bassline ahead, introducing chords later as the 303 does the floating instead. The percussion elements find themselves cloaked in a dreamy reverb, while extended synth lines produce an uplifting atmosphere from some unknown future city. While there is still a sense of fogginess, the melodies and chords wrap the listener in a poolside summer warmth. You can already pre-order your copy, out on june, 25th.

Fruit Merchant, the newborn label child of Hidden Spheres is turning three. Releases, that is. Launched earlier this year, Tom Harris has already managed to put three different offerings together for the masses. We had the pleasure of premiering the B1 on the first EP from the label founder himself entitled "Wonders of the Rainforest". The follow up was a re-issue of the classic Earth Boys (Roy Davis Jr & Jay Juniel) release "Destination Heaven", initially out on the then defunct, but now newly revitalized Undaground Therapy Muzik.

Fruit Merchant's third offering comes from fresh-faced producer Native Cruise who's got one track released to date on YAM Records. We've got the pleasure of premiering the B1 and title track, "Calypso Spring". The dreamy chord sequence starts off the production with just a slight hint of darkness. A simple yet groovy percussion groove introduces the rhythm and then the fat sounding bass comes in, following the downward trajectory of the chords. This ditty is a slowly developing jam that really hits its stride a little past the midway point, where all of the elements start to come together. An arpeggiated mallet melody, cosmic pads and the suspenseful background theme work with the other elements to create one of the more interesting pieces on the EP. We can see this one perfectly closing out some dancefloors in the wee hours.

While we’re less sure about who/what Momios is and why they/it should be fought, the acid and jazz parts of our premiere are self-evident. Fighting Momios With Acid And Jazz is the B1 cut from the upcoming second release of Leicester label, Flat White. Bogota’s Felipe Gordon is the artist behind the record that encompasses a lot of what we like at Bolting Bits: flavours of house, disco, techno and interesting blends of samples and original instrumentation.

The "Deep Fried Banana" EP is a five-tracker featuring a remix from The Last Trip To Gandahar, whose work we’ve premiered before. There isn’t a track we wouldn’t buy on this record, but our premiere is the stand out for us. While the percussive elements cut in and out, dusty-sounding jazz piano samples and a looped acid synth-line staple this track almost all the way through. It’s one of those pieces of music that feel like every part is completely intentional – even the rough bits are supposed to be rough. Felipe Gordon has built an impressive resume for himself recently, with releases on London’s Quintessentials and Berlin’s Toy Tonics, and we’re happy we can play a part in getting the word out on this guy, because his future looks bright. Clinical. A word best used to describe the latest 'Shapes & Spaces' EP from Tommy Tickle AKA Meles Meles. Separating his time between both London & Manchester, the young man's been on a writing roll of late, churning out some svelte recordings. When asked about this next slice, Tommy is quick to tell us the release encapsulates feelings of healing, catharsis and escapism. This one's a strange beast with a ream of flavours. You can hear nods to the likes of St Germain, UKG and early Leon Vynehall. 

As one quarter of jazz troupe A Broken Camarilla, Tommy uses his side project to explore his love of all things house, disco, garage and funk. And boy are we happy he does so! It is with great pleasure that we premiere 'Gold Rush', the third track off his latest escapade thanks to Ad Hoc Records.

'Gold Rush' screams carnival, streamers and colour. Imagine being a part of a dancing street procession with this blaring from the speakers. Elated horns and one very neat kick are the spectacle here. Throw in some jubilant vocal cries and it really does start to feel like we've legitimately struck Gold! 

'Shapes & Spaces' is Tommy's debut release via Ad Hoc, a label who push any Manchester sounds they vibe. A quote unquote "post anything mentality". Ad Hoc spread their arms far and wide in search of tunes that carry their imprint. No prejudices on language, ethnicity or socio-economic background. What an amazing ethos it is! There's enough division in our world as it stands, let dance bring us all closer together.

As you might know, Heist Recordings was created by the lads of Detroit Swindle as a means to take control of their own releases. However, in the 5 years that they have been in existence, Heist has also become a launching pad for many producers from their homeland the Netherlands. Artists like Nachtbraker to Frist Wentik and Fouk, all have featured their music on the label and have helped Heist become the Dutch, funk powerhouse that it is today. In keeping up with the tradition of showcasing the best deep house and disco the Dutch have to offer, Heist has decided to add another friend into the mix - the exquisite producer Pitto!

Set to come out tomorrow, Pitto's debut EP on the label Late Night Studio Moves will feature 3 new original tracks from him along with a delightful remix from Colin de la Plante, better known as the Mole. As you can hear in the lead track, Pitto's inspiration for the record seems to be heavily influenced by African melodies. Throughout the song's epic 9:26 entirety, one can hear playful vocals and percussion from the continent accompanied by a soulful array of piano keys and titillating synths. Each of these electronic and live elements are then tastefully brought in and out as the track takes the listener on a journey that will leave them in a state of dancefloor euphoria. We're sure that Late Night Studio Moves will be a crowd favorite wherever it is played this summer!

Our premiere from The Last Trip To Gandahar's latest effort on City Fly comes courtesy of the A2, Escape Through Time. 

A percussive and chant-laden intro build into the song, as a jazzy chords and strings slowly simmer into play. It's a chilled affair through and through, employing the jazz-funk aesthetics that were just alluded to. The whole thing sits nicely into the vibe the producer has cultivated for himself -- laidback and loose feeling disco endeavors that nod to the effortless cool of paradisaical 70's influences from across the globe.

If you monitor the house music scene coming out of Hong Kong, a name that you've probably heard of before is Romain Fx. For the past 10 years or so, Romain has been a key innovator in the HK scene, spearheading fresh concepts such as Roofest, the island's first rooftop festival and organizing monthly parties called ROAM in which he brings international artists such as Jayda G, Move D, Habibi Funk, Demuja to the city. Even if you're not too familiar with what is happening over that part of the world, you might even recognize him from his extensive touring in Europe, where he's played alongside the likes of Breakbot, Classixx, Kaytranada, College, Kolombo, Gigamesh, LNTG, FKJ, and many more.

In his latest effort, the French musician sets out with his Los Angeles brethren of Fantastic Voyage to release a collection of edits ranging from afro house to obscure disco cuts. The tune we're premiering for you guys today is an edit of Kamzu's song Indaba Kabani, which came out of South Africa during the early 90s. For those who love the original, you'll be happy to find out that RFX pays a lot of respect to it; choosing not to alter the original in a dramatic fashion. Instead, RFX simply makes it a tool that can easily be incorporated in DJ sets for you and me to unleash on the dancefloor! He's truly doing God's work here and we thank him for it.

Our next premiere comes to you from rhythm section aficionado Contours. After the much acclaimed Loose Wood EP back in 2016, North West is the Manchester Producer’s second release for Shall Not Fade. North West is brimming with all the delicacies we have come to expect from a Contours EP:  jazzy rhodes chords, tasty sax licks, and incredibly intricate polyrhythmic drum patterns.

Our choice cut from the EP is the title track, North West. The track opens with an airy repeating trumpet line that slowly rises much like the morning fog, as shimmering bells begin to sway around in the mix like a brisk gust on wind chimes. This eventually gives way to an entrancing conga pattern that pitters and patters like rain drops on a roof. Eventually a 2-step kick comes in and adds even further bounce to the track. On North West, Contours showcases his unique ability to fuse jazz and afro-beat influences into a pulsing thought provoking journey through a misty and grayscale terrain. When it comes to seriously good disco chuggers or edits, it’s fair to say that Orlando’s Sleazy McQueen, head honcho of Whiskey Disco and it’s sublabel Lovedancing, has the Midas touch for quite some time. Each and every record he decides to put out turns to solid black gold. Bolting Bits had an absolute pleasure to premiere tracks from two of the previous Lovedancing releases: LD03 which featured Tel Aviv’s underground beacons Rabo & Snob and LD06 which came from a French producer Closed Paradise and included masterfully crafted remixes from Texan The Silver Rider and Detroit’s Pontchartrain. It looks (and hears) like gold was struck yet again with the latest Lovedancing output. This time Sleazy is introducing Dagfest, a producer duo from Sweden’s capital city of Stockholm.

With previous releases on Ben Davis’ Paperecordings, Montreal’s Editorial records and UK’s ISM records, Dagfest should’ve found the place in the hearts and minds of cosmic funk aficionados. The latest offering from a duo comes as a 4 track vinyl with 2 original compositions and 2 remixes from NYC’s Superior Elevation Records boss Tom Noble and from Lovedancing CEO Sleazy McQueen himself.

Today Boltings Bits are happy to premiere the A1, title track of the release. “Falling in Love” is laden with funky guitars, catchy synths and a soulful vocal about one of the most beautiful feelings on Earth. “Dagfest” stands for day party in Swedish, but we are convinced that rather uptempo beat of this groover will surely provide enough charm and energy to stir and move dancefloors around the globe no matter whether it’s day, or night. Get your dancing shoes ready!

The great city of Amsterdam is a place rich in culture and beauty and is especially true when it comes to electronic music. De Dam boasts talent on all fronts – home to huge festivals such as Dekmantel and ADE as well as the prominent record store, Rush Hour. Hidden deep in the cities veins is another treasure in the form of Bordello A Parigi, a record store come label sitting pretty in Oudezijds Kolk releasing and distributing outstanding music since 2011.

Next out the oven for Bordello is a gorgeous 3-track masterpiece from Berlin-based duo, Longhair. Marko and Bene have curated a distinctive sound for Longhair seemingly inspired by the electronic sounds of the 80s and more specifically similar synth driven influences that came from Italy in the 1990’s.

Following theme for their debut EP with Bordello is a synth-rich masterpiece with that Italo touch as mentioned earlier, all the while complimented by powerful kick drums and broad bass that cutting through at lightening velocity. Our undisputed favourite of the release goes to ‘Bunny’, blissful gem starting out with that all familiar bellowing kick before being quickly joined by a dancing synthline full of funk and life. Longhairs exceptional percussion-work perfectly ties the whole thing together to create a soundscape able to uplift and destress anyone at any time. This EP is an example of why we get excited every single time we get wind of a Bordello A Parigi release, be sure not to miss out on Longhair’s fantastic debut EP.

Our next premiere comes from DJ Moonbeam, and is the first drop on SITU, a newly formed Lobster Theremin sub-label. DJ Moonbeam has been known to craft hazy cuts that drift through different shades of the Deep House spectrum. Apus De Soare showcases the producers evolving sound and ability to create tunes that are as apt for the dancefloor as they are for the home. 

Our fave is the title track Apus De Soare. It’s a slow burner with massive filter swoops and stabby chord rhythms. As the track progresses, you feel yourself leaving dancefloor as you ascend out of orbit and into space. Cosmic waves of arpeggiated synths find their way careening the mix, while the thumpy bassline steadies the ship throughout its voyage. Moonbeam has honed an eclectic palette of Deep House sounds and distilled it into something uniquely his own.
