This is a re-recording of my piece Hysteresis[1]. The original version was made using Meng Qi's WIngie2 resonator device as the sound source. In this version, I instead used my Implication Organ Csound instrument[2] as the sound source, but with the same pedals: dual Fat Fuzz Factories (one for each channel), Deluxe Memory Man with Hazarai, and Infinity looper. Like the original version, I recorded this as a single-take performance in my studio. I did some post-production (reverb, EQ, mastering) in Reaper.

Short demo of custom Csound wavetable instrument. It can use any number of waveforms & interpolate between any two frames (single-cycle waveforms), linearly or completely randomly, while also automating the weighted average between them. This example uses one instrument with 44 waveforms & plays 3 notes - the first half of the example is one note. The next uses 2.

As always I'm impressed with the power & versatility of Csound - if you can imagine it, Csound makes it possible.

Telamon is Greek for "enduring" and is an epithet of Atlas, the Titan who upholds the celestial spheres (not the Earth) as punishment for siding with other Titans in their war against the Olympian gods. Herakles got Atlas to fetch the golden apples of immortality from the garden of the Hesperides, his daughters, by offering to hold up the sky in his place. But Herakles tricked Atlas into holding up the sky again by saying he needed to fold up his cloak as a pad for his shoulders, then running away, so as far as I know, Atlas is still holding up the sky from embracing the earth, and through this enormous punishment opening up a space for human life and consciousness.

This piece is one of a cycle inspired by the great sculpture in the Naples museum of antiquities showing a weary, haunted Herakles resting on his club, with the three golden apples held behind his back.

This piece was composed on my Android tablet using the Csound6 app. The score was generated using a recursive iterated function system written in Lua. The system operates both on notes, and on chords, using the K, Q, and T operations of neo-Riemannian music theory. In essence, tne computer generates a triadic chord progression with a major/minor duality that is not "tonal" in the strict sense, but makes many of the same moves as tonal music. The chord operations are performed using my ChordSpace software, based on the work of Dmitri Tymoczko and of Thomas M. Fiore and Ramon Satyendra.

A further attempt to explore interesting possibilities in electronic music. Some of it is a reworking of material from 1A, and other parts come from new experiments in granular synthesis.

During the studies at the ICEM Folkwang University I programmed an instrument in csound to understand the additive synthesis. This is an improvisation with this instrument made around 2006. The instrument works live with 32 sine waves. Each one of them is individually controlled in amplitude and frequency deviation.

Mark (aka Mystahr) at the Justnotnormal Netlabel has just released their second massive compilation, no-R-mal II, 71 tracks of experimental music organized into six sets (each of which is suitable for burning to a CD). Each CD has a theme; the first one is called Warm voices, and it includes a track of mine called Penumbral.

Penumbral started life several years ago as a piece called Passacagla & Fugue State and uses a “scale” I built from the set of pitches used in the La Monte Young sine wave installation called (deep breath) “The Base 9:7:4 Symmetry in Prime Time When Centered above and below The Lowest Term Primes in The Range 288 to 224 with The Addition of 279 and 261 in Which The Half of The Symmetric Division Mapped above and Including 288 Consists of The Powers of 2 Multiplied by The Primes within The Ranges of 144 to 128, 72 to 64 and 36 to 32 Which Are Symmetrical to Those Primes in Lowest Terms in The Half of The Symmetric Division Mapped below and Including 224 within The Ranges 126 to 112, 63 to 56 and 31.5 to 28 with The Addition of 119”. This is a revision of my earlier piece, with (hopefully) higher-quality sound and several other changes here and there.

The piece was not intended to imitate natural sounds, but it did result in some sounds that are somewhat reminiscent of the peepers and insects that can be heard in rural places. Listening to it this morning, it blended very well with the cricket sounds coming through the open windows of my living room.

Penumbral (from "no-R-mal II", 2010)

“The Living Ocean” is a piece inspired by Stanislaw Lem’s “Solaris”. I was struck by the humans encounters with the living ocean on the planet, their fascination and draw into it, and their utlimate inability to rationalize and understand it. Their experiences often left them with more questions than answers, not only about the living ocean, but also themselves and the nature of their own existence.

For me, the story of “Solaris” holds many parallels to the experience of art that I search for when composing. Listening: drawn in, fascinated, the rational mind at rest, only an irrational experience is left. Afterwards: awe, questions about the work, questions for myself, curiosity.

The living ocean

I composed this piece algorithmically using a recurrent iterated function system operating on notes, times, instrument assignments, and chords.

I rendered the piece entirely in Csound using a variety of instruments by me, and by other people and adapted by me. The instruments are all direct synthesis, there is no sampling or processing of recorded sound.

The entire piece, including the Csound orchestra, is a C++ program.

432hz 1:1 for 432 seconds
Every added prime harmonic lasts as long as it's division of 432 and repeat that number of times.
All tones fade in at 50% their duration.
