Incoming with 90mins of Soulful Jungle for day two of the Mix Drop is Lubi J !

Based in Cardiff, the Headspace resident started off mostly playing soulful/liquid dnb back in 2000 and was heavily influenced by Fabio’s liquid funk and artists like Calibre, Carlito and Addiction, Bukem. In recent years she’s become more immersed again in the darker breaks and beats of jungle, drawing from labels like Function, Rupture, Samurai, AKO and Repertoire.

For her debut Certain Sounds mix she's drawn for a selection inspired by those early 2000's vibes but with a whole heap of modern Soulful Jungle tunes thrown in for good measure!

David’s love of music began with his fascination with the church organ, at the age of three years lying on the floor of the church every Sunday, being mesmerised by the organist playing the foot pedals! He continually asked his mum and dad to let him have piano lessons. Finally his mum asked a Piano Teacher for his opinion, (knowing that he didn’t teach children until the age of seven). The teacher spotted David’s potential, even though he was only five at the time, he started lessons the next week!

He attended Oldham Hulme Grammar School and then went to Oldham Sixth Form College to take A Levels. He went on to Study at The Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester (2000/2004) gaining his BA/GradRNCM. David studied with Darius Battiwalla, Ronald Frost, Jeffery Makinson and Jeremy Young, and participated in Master Classes with:- Nicolas Kynaston, Colin Walsh, David Sanger, David Briggs, Graham Barber, Kevin Bowyer, Naji Hakim, Dame Gillian Weir, and Jacques van Oortmerssen. His training was continued at the Royal Northern College of Music as part of the degree programme. The course was so thorough, that as well as advice and training in the teaching of the Organ, David had an entire year of specialist training from Judith Burton on the teaching of the Piano.

David has been employed as Director of Music of Holy Innocents Church, Fallowfield and as School Organist at Bury Church of England High School. 

From 2001 to 2012,  he has been Director of Music at St. Paul’s Parish Church, Royton, running a small choir which sang at Morning Service with Choral Evensong once a month. David also ran a very successful Music Club, which he recently took on a visit to the Bridgewater Hall, all pupils played individually on the stage. The music club have played in concerts at various venues, three times in presence of the Mayor of Oldham. David has also been an accompanist at Oldham Choir for two years up until recently.

David was Assistant Director of Music at St George's Church Stockport , where he trained the Choral Scholars, and accompanied the choir for all services. 


From 2013 to 2018 he was organist at St Saviour's Church, Great Moor, Stockport. In 2018 he became the Director of Music at St Wilfrid’s, Mobberley, Cheshire. 

When David was at RNCM, he was invited to play as a Guest Organ Virtuoso in a concert for the Mayor of Rochdale which featured Organ, Brass Band and Vocal Performances.
Other highlights in David’s career include a Dedication Service at Chester Cathedral, the Requiem by Duruflé with the King Edward Choral Society in Macclesfield and a Benediction Service at Manchester Cathedral.

He is requested to play at many churches in the area for weddings and funerals and other events. David is a regular visitor to The Island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean where his Grandmother lives. He has, from a very early age, given Organ Recitals at St. Vincent’s Cathedral and the Methodist Church and these have been broadcast on local radio.

Since then, further studies at Edge Hill University have led to him becoming a busy teacher, both of junior choirs and keyboard players. David is also in great demand as an accompanist and an improviser across Manchester and has seen service with Oldham Choir, Smithy Belles Choir and Rossendale Ladies Choir.



Multi-genre DJ and newbie jungle producer (under alias Lw)

Lubi J is all about the selections, whether it’s old skool or modern, atmospheric, soulful or dark and moody, she loves strong tunes that create impact in the dance.

Based in Cardiff, she started off mostly playing soulful/liquid jungle dnb back in 2000, heavily influenced by Fabio’s liquid funk album and artists like Calibre, Carlito and Addiction, Bukem and the EZ Rollers. 

Despite mostly playing liquid in the early days her love for jungle and the darker styles was always there and she would still pull out tracks from labels like Ram, Liftin Spirits, Metalheadz, V Recordings, Full Cycle and Renegade Hardware. 

In the latter part of the 00s she discovered her love for disco, funk and soul after being educated by her friend and artist Hoxe on the history of breakbeats in jungle. This led to a handful of local residencies playing funk & disco over the course of the next few years. 

She then returned more prominently to playing jungle dnb around 2012 when Catapult Records (legendary record store in Cardiff) started putting on events in the unique Vaults venue. 

She’s held residencies and played at a number of different nights in Cardiff and over the bridge in the last 20 years, supporting a raft of the finest in the scene, including; Fabio, Bukem, Calibre, Storm, Digital, Spirit, Total Science, Mampi Swift, Djinn, Roni Size, Break, Alley Cat, Randall, Klute and Doc Scott.

After feeling the void of modern jungle and heavier dnb in the capital city, the year 2022 brought the start of putting on her own events with fellow DJ, Electra. 
Headspace was born.

In 2024 Lubi J started playing disco regularly again, expanding her passion for these uplifting sounds and exploring more of the soulful/disco house spectrum, often alongside her ‘disco wife’, Sister Sesh  at one of their now legend b2bs, often seen at Cardiff’s Shake The Horse.

In addition to this, Lubi J has been quietly exploring producing jungle dnb and had her first release on Exstatic Records - ‘One and all’ in January 2024, under a new producer alias ‘Lw’ (pronounced Lou - a version of the Welsh word for ‘oath’).
