1981, The Scientific Americans from a limited-run of 100 handmade cassettes under the title "Some Dumb F*cks From Somewhere or Other". Credits: Elias, O'Donnell, Vine, & Whittemore (although virtually everything in the song is stolen from other places and stitched together tongue-in-cheek.

1980 or 81? Girlfriend Dub by The Scientific Americans from a limited 100 copy cassette release titled "Some Dumb F*cks from Somewhere Or Other Beyond" recorded on a Teac 3340s in a basement in Northampton, MA followed by another live version of Eep Opp Ork recorded live off the board at Rahars with dub manipulation by Sean Alias. A slightly different mix of Girlfriend was included on the ROiR album "Load And Go!" and Eep was left off of that international release.  These were taken off my master copy from the original run of 100 hand-made tapes; no post-processing.

1979 or 80? Basement studio in Northampton, MA on a hot summer evening to a TEAC 3340S. This was a project known as Human Error and this track features Elliott Sharp, Chris Vine, and myself.  Several other tracks from these sessions were included on Elliott's 2006 retrospective, Arc 2 on Atavistic Records but this one was not.  I did the production & recording along with the synths, Elliott & Chris played the rest.  I've always enjoyed the tune particularly Elliott in falsetto mode calling out "Na-tu-ral selection!" and then coming in with his normal baritone on the fade-out with the apocryphal warning, "make room, make room".  Elliot and Chris went on to serious careers as musicians & composers, I wisely entered the business world.

Daniel Lanois' career reads like an enviable work of fantasy. From his early work with Brian Eno and Harold Budd on their genre defining "ambient" works, pivotable roles in U2 classics The Unforgettable Fire, Joshua Tree and Actung Baby!, to his work with Bob Dylan, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, Aaron Neville, and of course his body of work as a band leader and solo artist, Daniel Lanois has continued to look forward and stay inspired by being at once a master and student of his craft. His latest release Venetian Snares X Daniel Lanois(a collaboration with Aaron Funk) keeps the tradition of not just pushing, but ignoring boundaries. Online editor Geoff Stanfield caught up with Daniel to discuss this latest release and what's happened since we last interviewed Daniel back in Tape Op issue #37. Enjoy!

Episode 18: Daniel Lanois

Guitarist who began playing improvised music in his teens on the UK free improvisation arena and developed his sound in the downtown music scenes of New York and Washington D.C. in the early 1980’s, working with Elliott Sharp, Bobby Previte and NPR's Bob Boilen amongst others.  He formed the Heat Poets in partnership with the open field poet Chris Torrance in Wales in 1985.  Vine was guitarist with Ted Milton’s cult group Blurt throughout the 1990’s and worked as composer and sound designer for Welsh dance and theatre companies such as Earthfall, Teatr Genedlaethol Cymru and the Centre for Performance Research. He has been based in Brazil since 2000 working with dance, theatre and film companies including Verve Cia de Dança and Union Filmes. He formed the Ambient Improvisation duo Barsa and Briggy with Brazilian percussionist Wesley Ribeiro in 2010 and is currently a member of the Ethernet Orchestra, a global group of improvisers who perform in real time via internet, with members in Australia, Brazil, Germany, Canada, Iran, Norway, UK and China playing both traditional acoustic and modern electronic instruments.
