water’s churned up, there’s mud in the creek

the raw blood of the trees & the shifting clouds
and the tender light, & the bud red boughs

tomorrow

The clearing where a hundred trees came down
Is filling up with twilight and the sound
Of the silent heavens rolling 
and the rain drops’ silver tears 
And so I’ve dropped my body to the ground
And closed my eyes as the coyotes come ‘round
And prayed the dark would keep me from 
my fears

I guess I’ve got a reason 
a need - for what it’s worth
just to walk alone 
on the stubble of this earth

cannot bend my wheel
cannot fake my laugh

The Sound of Silence

Never was there brazen ever more craven
Having to give up and go.

Building like a mason travesty wasted
the curtain raised for the show

Having and asking another is masking
power abused to grow.

Hopeful, a diner by himself a boozer on the shelf.

Dilute, imprisoned systematically, forever old and caustically.

Never can you listen as rain water glistens
Hoping for an execution stay.

Having people lined up and thrown in the trash heap 
of life as if any old day.

Making mistakes but reforming their way as they list ‘felon’ on a resume’

Hey no one! Locked away; 18 years to rot, racist jury swayed.

Hey no one! We’re still here; hope outwilled our carcinogenic fear.

Hoping for umbrellas while rain falls harder as one more you have to save.

Written when the Queensland floods in 2011 were peaking, and recorded soon after. A storm at our studio was added later.

In a Chinese Café, chopsticks in my hand
Eating rice and scallops like an educated man
She blew right in the doorway and all dimensions changed     
The river waves were lapping all along the grange                       
Brown water carried lives away
Dragging them to nowhere a place they’ll always stay
She brought a shortcut to nothing

On a road out in the ranges with the window down
The clouds were swelling greyly on the east side of town
She blew right down the valley all the land was drowned    
The road became a river houses floated down
