Nice! :) not heard this species before. Weirdly I've not heard that many frogs around this year in large choruses as I usually do. Wonder if somethings changed...Not seeing so many tree frogs either. Usually spotting them in the grass by now. Was this chorus going all night? Thanks for sharing!

The Marais Du Verdier is a rich marshland made up of four former fishponds totalling 120 hectares, with a variety of habitats (reedbeds, bulrushes, salt meadows, ponds, tamarisk groves). This recording captures the intense amphibian chorus after dusk, with many Stripeless Tree Frogs (hyla meridionalis) vocalising.

"When I create music, I try to experiment with a way of composing that lets musical ideas develop freely, guided by improvisation.
The material, the melodic and rhythmic elements, then find their final pattern in computer editing.
But, we need to keep and feel a certain fluidity from the playing itself.
With BORA BORA, I continue my work with keyboards, principally, and other instruments like flutes.
But keys are the core of the music.
Since the previous album (Aubusson), a new one was invited in the intrumentarium: the Arturia Polybrute synthesizer.
Its colorful sound palette is very inspiring and gives a kind of mood of this new album, BORA BORA. Each track is like a painting, a draw or a short film. The titles are always important because they can open the imaginary and may be combined with the sounds in a sort of mental soundscape.
This album is a journey through different feelings and sound images. But there is a common color, I guess, like a dark indigo haze, a slightly melancholic dusk. This is notable in the track Le Tunnel de Klaus (a tribute to Klaus Shulze), for example.
Music is a journey.
An experimentation of our own internal perceptions. I hope this album brings the listener in a joyful listening experience."

Five String Sculpture is a composition/sound sculpture exploring the disposition of two different acoustic formations - one long, straight and slightly angled and another smaller one in a convex shape. Each structure is built from the combination of electronic and acoustic sound that spreads between loudspeaker at one end, and acoustic sound of the instrument at another end. To explore the idea of an electro-acoustic piece in which sound can propagate into various directions and can be localised in a couple of fixed
configurations, I have defined 5 “strings” of sound each between one instrument and one loudspeaker, and I have used this to delineate the acoustic space of the work. “String" is therefore the main structural unit of the piece and their activation and
musical treatment, shape the overall form of the work.

"all the ways in which i am mute" is a sort of attempt at the meditation practice of tonglen. tonglen comes in different ways but it's about taking in the pain and suffering of others and giving back compassion and relief. an endeavor to try to be more outwards and amongst.

the work isn't about how to perform that practice or even claiming any growth with it but about the struggle and acknowledgement of the parts of life outside yourself and what it might mean on any given moment to open to that. it's about my failures with this as much as any success.

In a small fishing village located on a remote island, there was an elderly man who loved to stroll along the beach at sunset, leaving his footprints on the golden sand as he contemplated the infinite sea.

One evening, as he walked along the shore, he came across a young boy sitting on a rock, lost in his thoughts.

"What are you doing here all alone?" he asked kindly.

The boy looked up, surprised to be interrupted. "I'm just trying to understand the meaning of life," he replied weakly.

The elderly man smiled and sat down beside him. "The meaning of life is like this ocean we see before us," he said, gesturing towards the vastness of the sea. "Majestic and mysterious. We may not always understand it, but we must accept its flow."

The boy nodded, but still seemed perplexed.

"Look at the waves," the elderly man continued. "They're like the events of life. Some are high and tumultuous, others are gentle and serene. But in the end, they all crash upon the shore, leaving only smooth and uniform sand."

The boy watched the ocean attentively, reflecting on the old fisherman's words.

"Life is made up of moments that leave their mark," he said. "But just like footprints in the sand, they will eventually be erased by the tide of time. No matter how hard we try to leave our mark, in the end, everything will fade away."

The boy felt relieved of an invisible burden as he listened to the wise words of the elderly man. Perhaps there was no need to search for the meaning of life so anxiously. Perhaps all he needed was to learn to accept the flow of time and enjoy the present moment.

That night, as the tide silently rose on the beach, the elderly man and the boy sat together on the rock, watching the sea shimmer in the moonlight. And in that moment, in the quiet of the island, they found the inner peace they had been seeking.

Of the Night Sky / Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet [HS45]

Handstitched* returns after a summer excursion and is super-excited to announce the next release in the split-artist series, this limited issue is by producer and instrumentalist Andrew Dobson under his guise Of The Night Sky, and French sound artist Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet.

Both artists deliver two emotionally resonant and individual perspectives for the split EP, Of The Night Sky who has previously released an EP on the Cactus Island label as Digitonal visits Handstitched* with his Coastal EP which focuses on his creative visions, surroundings and explorations with combinations of textured ambience and introspective harmonies which links Of The Night Sky’s music and the Suffolk landscapes together in musical soundscapes.

Jean-Emmanuel Rosnet is focused on improvisation - weaving patchworks of modular synthesis, tape variations, resampling and digital process into magical and mysterious sound collages, inspired by Musique Concrète and his trademark overlapping of intimate dimensions within natural environments. À main levée was composed in early 2024 in the heart of Parc Naturel du Livradois-Forez's green hills where he is now located. À main levée follows his recent album Les Alentours which was released on Californian imprint Not Not Fun Records.

Issued on limited edition mini double CD and C-45 cassette [HS45] both formats are limited to 50 copies, featuring individually hand-bound and unique hand-cut collage CD wallets made from vintage Japanese materials and papers.

Each CD copy is hand-numbered and packed inside glassine bags. Handmade, creased and glued tape O-cards are presented in five separate designs taken from the collage artworks of the CD covers and packed in clear eco bags.

Have you ever stopped to sip a tea and become enchanted by the structure of the cup? Especially if you are dealing with a set made of Raku, Stoneware, or other materials that appear "rough" at first glance, the cracks, often intentional as in the crackle technique, or the imperfections on the surface along with the crystalline bubbles and all the bas-reliefs, form structures resembling a lunar surface, volcanic rock, the bed of a dried-up river, a field of clay crumbled by the sun. All these images can be seen in a beautiful handmade cup.

This is where I drew inspiration to create this musical project: moments of relaxation where, on those rare occasions you stop and dedicate time to yourself, sitting without commitments, enjoying your tea, in the company of a book, a delicate thread of smoke rising from an incense stick, obviously accompanied by good music. The immersion of the senses, slowed down by everything, leads you into almost ecstatic dimensions, hoping that no one comes to shake you or clap their hands to bring you back to "reality," a true trauma for the nervous system and the entire psychic sphere. In that moment, you are resting deeply, your mental waves slow down in frequency, it is the praise of emptiness, a true open-eyed meditation, a great psychosomatic regeneration.

The tracks in this album are long, open, driven by soft and velvety synthetic winds to enchant you and lead you into a state of bliss. The sounds come almost entirely from my modular synthesizer, where almost every sound is created on the spot, especially in tracks 2 and 3. No memory can bring back that pattern you created at that moment; just a small modification and you can lose the sonic architecture in an instant. When you unplug the cables to generate other sounds, it will be almost impossible to return to the previous structure. This is the charm of the modular synthesizer: working in the search for a texture, recording and letting go, much like creating a sand mandala and then sweeping it away with one hand.

In addition to the main texture of the modular synthesizer, the background is enriched with loops, organic drones, granular systems, and field recordings, processed to shape a surreal and dreamlike landscape, where a real sound is confused with one modeled in total synthesis and vice versa.

With the hope of being able to alter your state of consciousness or at least your perception of space-time for a profound exploration of the true self, I thank Andrea and his label for giving me the opportunity to be part of this wonderful community.

Wide soundscapes, nostalgic pads, heavy chords, rich textures and fragile plucked melodies, pull us to the deepest and darkest before bringing us back to the light. That’s the transformation path that Dive want to take us across all tracks. Dive, the album title, as a metaphor about leaving the surface and falling into the deepest emotions, face the unknown and therefor be forced to grow.

After his self-tittled and self-released debut album in 2019, a mixture of ambient, electronic and post rock, on this new album João Pedro Nogueira wanted to take on a new direction and focused only on ambient and electronic.

For the most of the sounds vintage analog synths were used.

Dive, Pt. 8

Jonas Munk is a Danish composer known for his atmospheric, ambient soundscapes, released under his real name, as well as the celebrated Manual project, which I've been following from the early 2000s via Make Mine Music, Darla, and Morr. Most of his solo works (and collaborations with Ulrich Schnauss) appear on his own Azure Vista Records, including the record I'm sharing today. And if that's not enough, you may [and should] recognise his other renowned project with Jason Kolb, known as Billow Observatory, which I've lauded on these pages for every single release. If you already know this fantastic artist, you can learn more about his process in this interview, which I published in 2019: In the studio with Jonas Munk. His latest release, titled Mirror Phase, is the final record in the trilogy of minimal ambient albums composed using guitar loops and lush synth pads. My favourite piece on the album is the title track, which is why I'm happy to premiere it for you today. This is the longest piece, approaching 18 minutes, and it's a slow-burn evolution of warm frequencies that oscillate at different phases, creating that beating of constantly shifting patterns, which finally develop into a blissful sonic space. Suddenly, all of the eighteen minutes pass, and I feel like I should experience the journey all over. Everything is perfectly out of focus, creating a brand-new perspective on repeat rotations. These are the stunning "sonic structures that gradually evolve, like cloud formations in the sky..." Fans of delicate and introspective moments from the likes of William Basinski, Christopher Willits, and Stars of the Lid will find themselves in a familiar environment with plenty of texture to get lost in and then discover themselves again.
