“You don’t sound like anyone else,” said Danny Thompson — legendary bass player for Nick Drake and Joe Strummer — about English producer Conil.

Tchad Blake, the renowned audio engineer for Tom Waits and Elvis Costello, echoed Thompson’s sentiment: “Strange Part of the Country is an awesome album. I still listen to it.”

Conil’s music reached even further when Fleetwood Mac blues icon Peter Green made a rare visit to his studio, drawn by deep admiration. Their encounter led to a hauntingly mellow version of Conil’s homage to the jazz greats, “Woke Up Around Midnight.”

Few artists cross boundaries like Conil, and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. Admirers of his genre-defying sound include guitar icon Marc Ribot, British folk-blues pioneer Davey Graham, bass maestro Pino Palladino, and studio legend John Leckie.

As Strange Part of the Country continues to resonate with listeners around the world, it’s enjoying a well-deserved renaissance, becoming a lasting favorite.

Upon its release, the album made a quiet but undeniable impact in the UK. Q Magazine awarded it four stars and a coveted Q Recommends stamp, while Blues Matters featured Conil on its front cover, calling him “one of the most original artists out there.”

In the U.S., “Years Between” climbed to number three on the Alternative Radio Chart, receiving widespread airplay across the country.

Growing up in England, Conil has always felt a deep connection to American music. With close family ties and long-standing friendships across the U.S., the bond runs both deep and personal.

In 2011, he embarked on a transformative decade-long journey through some of the world’s most musically rich cities. From the soul of New Orleans to the grit of New York, the depth of Chicago, and the spirit of Austin, then across the Atlantic to Berlin and Athens, he immersed himself in each place, chasing a deeper understanding of music and the lives it shapes.
