Mapping psychedelic flight patterns between worlds unknown, Noura Labbani and Jennifer Cardini’s electronic noir imprint Dischi Autunno sits right in the centre of dance music’s primordial universe. Italo, acid, electro, disco, emo, alternative, indie, lo-fi, trance, bass, new beat, big beat, synthwave and coldwave; a huge unclassifiable cauldron of moody electronic vapours fuming away at a sultry slow and low tempo.

Swooping low in the shadows since their last outing in November (Pablo Bozzi’s ‘Last Moscow Mule’) the label slides into our DMs (Doc Martens) fashionably late for 2021 with their most explorative and daring dispatch to date: ‘Intermezzo 1 & 2’. Two vital VA Collections, 22 tracks in total, the label’s sprawling leftfield network is articulately mapped out in more cosmic detail than ever before.

Some of the destinations may already be familiar as both  ‘Intermezzo’ missions occasionally reference previous trips. Label ally and confidant Curses is present and correct (and also responsible for the artwork, along with his wife) as are Younger Than Me, Golden Filter, Chinaski, Kendal, Javi Redondo and Dollkraut. But many more acts featured on here are new to the burgeoning stable; new talent who’ve been grafting at the future coalface underthe radar. Freeride Millenium label co-founder Jorkes quickly follows up his well received Wet Dream EP with a new
five tracker including remixes from Younger Than Me and Curses.
Jorkes is the driving force behind the ever-excellent Freeride Millenium label, he hosts a residency at radio 80000
alongside ParisBöhm and has been busy producing and streaming over the last year, despite the pandemic. His
recent ‘Wet Dreams’ release was a critical success, with BBC radio support, a raft of press coverage and a mass of
DJ support, now he follows that up with this latest inventive and rugged EP of club sounds.
Opener 'All Your Juices' has snappy snares and a taught, tight groove that makes for a mechanical rhythm. It
eventually grows looser with big synth sounds and vamping chords that layer in fluidly and a great sense of
electronic funk. Remixers Younger Than Me are a Berlin based duo that represents a link between the old and the
new. They have released on the likes of Tusk Wax and here flip the original into a dark and pulsing tune with
hammering drums and edgy, trance influenced synths.
In original form, 'Dancer in the Dark' has a kinetic drum and hit combination that makes you immediately jerk your
body. As the synth energy grows, celestial chords bring light and cosmic rays and take you off into the future. Dark
disco don Curses then steps up with another brilliantly rugged and raw remix that layers sleazy synths into angular
drums. Finally, the brilliant 'Afraid of Letting You Go' has an eerie and mysterious vibe with crashing hits and
unsettling synths that make for a dystopian abandoned warehouse feel.
Once again here Jorkes has cooked up left of centre sounds that draw on synth, disco and techno in bold new
ways. Artwork as always comes from the ever creative Daniel Rajcsanyi.

The fourth release in the whypeopledance catalog comes from Montréal’s Laurence Matte, who made a mix for WPD’s LAYER series not so long ago.
Last winter, Laurence found the time to bring to life her introverted slow-burners under the spiritual guidance of legendary racing horse, Monomoy Girl. Another angel overlooking the project is Laurence's closest confidant for as long as she can remember, her grandma Louise, a character that comes alive in the EP's title.
What started as some of her first-ever studio sessions quickly took on lives of their own and later materialized into full-fledged chuggers in a friend’s studio, buried deep somewhere in the Montreal snow in the dead of the darkest season.
MR TC and Curses read the book in their own way and take care of the remixes to round out the release. Curses transport us to New York’s Central Park sometime in the ’80s, where we’ll spend a crazy afternoon running around, and tripping balls. In the second iteration, MR TC takes the timid Louise on a healing path, possibly with the help of some acid.

Somewhere between these two questions exists this seismic slab of dark post-disco drama from Leipzig duo @newhook: ‘Manipulation’. A track to make you consider the extents of how much you manipulate your environment and how much it manipulates you; ‘Manipulation’ first came to life in 2018. The same year Riotvan introduced the duo to the world on their ‘Familiar Faces’ VA collection. Four years, and various releases on the likes of Ombra and Live At Robert Johnson, later and the original version of ‘Manipulation’ has recently been released on Underground Pacific album ‘The Only Good Wave Is A New One’. But there’s more to story... Now redeveloped and reworked, ‘Manipulation’ has been manipulated into this epic club missile on Riotvan. Electrified and strident in its swagger, this new version maintains the duo’s sultry, provocative vocal but carries much more dancefloor weight. Every bit as sharp and to the point as the name 

New Hook suggests, it’s also been blessed with an equally forthright twist from dark disco don @cursesforever who brings a little added funk to the bassline, manipulating the already manipulated ‘Manipulation’ with his own unique flare. Now it’s time for your turn to manipulate it in the mix...

In sheer rapture, Riotvan hereby announces... Curses, the most classy and charming prince of darkness that contemporary dance music has to offer, is debuting on the label with a new release. 

We’ve seen him on remix duties for New Hook recently. Still, here we find him submitting two originals, crafted with his regular companion, Dame Bonnet, on the bass and showcasing a rather tender sentiment within the signore’s emotional spectrum. 'Premonitions' aligns bass-driven Postpunk-verve with blissful synths and an overall romantic tuning that Human League or Tears For Fears would’ve sold some close relatives to achieve. 

'Salvation', on the other hand, builds a somewhat meditative, almost IDM-like grounding, on top of which Curses practices a head-spinning Talkbox-exorcism.

Exclusive remix of Los Angeles and Bologna based Nuovo Testamento's Heartbeat by Curses himself! Taken from the band's 2023 album Love Lines, Heartbeat - in its original form a shimmering italo synth pop number, part Danceteria-era Madonna, part Yazoo - has been ruthlessly retooled here by Curses for strobe lit sweatboxes. Shifting the emphasis from its sparkling synths and pop melody towards the rhythm section, the track's synth bass now dominates the track just as its martial kick drums and gated snares push us deeper into EBM territory.

Taking us on a sleazy, strobe lit tour of the darker corners of clubland Next Wave Acid Punx DEUX is the second compilation curated for Eskimo Recordings by Luca Venezia, aka Curses. Threading the needle between early industrial, EBM, post-punk experiments and some of the most exciting music being made today, the 49 track compilation also features some of Luca's own exclusive remixes such as his 'Revamp' of New Beat classic J.W.B. Hits The Beat's 'Body On Body'.

Originally released back in 1987, Curses' remix brings the track right up date, pushing the tempo and toughening up the drums whilst stripping it back down to focus on the portentous choral synth pads and teasing us with its ecstatic vocal samples before the effervescent Italo melody brings it all together. A perfect synthesis of past and present, much like the compilation it's taken from.

High-NRG material for dance floor-melting moments. Neuchâtel, Switzerland, based production duo Psycho Weazel  fuses rich instrumental layers with forward-thinking electronic production. Premiere: Psycho Weazel - Melodrama (Curses Remix) [À Table]

Ransom Note launches Pen Pals Volume 2: a collaborative compilation created in isolation. Since the Covid-19 lockdown began the music and events industry has been thrown into unchartered waters, leaving artists and online media in a financially vulnerable position, and with much more time on their hands. To help some of those artists, and provide Ransom Note with much-needed financial support, in April label reached out to some friends of the website with the challenge to make a track in collaboration with another producer, musician or vocalist, remotely. The result was ‘Pen Pals’, a compilation featuring 15 collaborations. Following the reception of the first release, label decided to embark on volume two, enlisting a fresh group of artists and musicians to take up the challenge. 40 artists stepped up to the plate and 19 tracks were produced culminating in a compilation spanning a vast musical breadth.
Profits from sales on Bandcamp’s Juneteenth (19/06/20) will be donated to Black Minds Matter UK.

Amongst the open armed greetings, excited laughter and lively chatter, she couldn't quite find her footing. It was as if there was an invisible wall she couldn't break down. She could hear everyone else but the words to respond weren't coming to her. How could it be that even surrounded by a room full of friendly faces and old friends, she felt isolated and alone... 

After a brief release hiatus during lockdown, East London party and label Snap, Crackle & Pop get things rolling again with an EP from cult Glaswegian post punk group Junto Club. Marking their second release for SC&P following 2016's Shiviana / Ikiryo EP which helped launch the imprint, The Alameda sees the band build on their distinct sound, crafting a more dance-floor focused sound by letting the synths and drum machines do the talking. On the flip, both tracks get the rework treatment from Gabe Gurnsey and Groove Armada remixer Fall Forward and longtime SC&P collaborator, Ombra International boss Curses, who steers 'Alone' into darker realms with a punchy, driving techno take on the original.

The package opens with a wonderful remix from Klaam for "Nandu - True". For sure this one will get you very emotional. The work Klaam has provided is simply amazing and brings this amazing track into another dimension. It's so intense, sexy, and delicate...

Then comes the release of our friend Curses for Abschaum. We met Curses a few years ago in Berlin and when we decided to do a remix package for Abschaum, Curses was an obvious choice... With this remix, Luca shows his skills to produce powerful clubby reinterpretation in the line of his previous works on Ombra International, Dischi Autunno. Amazing...

Stevie R carries on the journey with an indie dance remix for "Kosmas - Pan Metron Ariston" that we released earlier this year. No surprise, the London based producer has produced a stunning remix, highlighting the oriental synths from Kosmas with perfection.

This various closes with 1-800 girls and his remix for "Marabou - IOU". 1-800 has been in our remixer shortlist for a while now and this remix proves us that we were right to think strongly about him. He is taking us into a melancholic electronic balad made of raw synths and vintage drums. We love it.
