I've been working on this song for a little while.  Figured I would throw it out on the Cloud to get some feedback before working on a more polished version.  Recorded as one take with a SnowBall USB mic and the Soundcloud Record Button.  Let me know what you think and where it needs work.

Yellowgold - Lonely Nights

I spent the 2002-2003 academic year in Denmark, studying with Andy Pape and attending Niels Rosing-Schow’s composition seminar at Det Kongelige Danske Musikkonservatorium.  In addition to consuming vast quantities of chocolate-filled pastries, I began working on an opera based on H. Weirs-Jansson’s play "Anne Pedersdotter," which was in turn based on the transcripts from a sixteenth-century Norwegian witchcraft trial.  Although the play was successfully adapted into operas by Edvard Fliflet Bræin and Ottorino Respighi, and into the film "Vredens Dag" (Day of Wrath) by the brilliant director Carl Dreyer, I ultimately moved on to other projects after completing the first act.  "Bergen Variations" is a relatively conventional set of variations on an original chorale theme I intended to weave in and out of the opera score.  The instrumentation is that of Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony: 2 oboes, bassoon, 2 horns, and strings.  Special thanks to Peter Freisinger for commissioning a piece for this terrific and terrifying ensemble, and special thanks to Joshua Feltman for his invaluable advice and suggestions.  Special thanks as well to Jeff Krehbiel and the Church of the Pilgrims in Washington, DC for offering me such a beautiful space in which to compose.

A song which describes a year when everything went right...

Gold and Silver Moons is a set of three character pieces for flute, oboe, and piano.  Each piece is based on one of Vachel Lindsay’s poems for children “in which the moon is the principal figure of speech” and prominently features one of the instruments in the trio: “The Haughty Snail-King” (oboe), “What Semiramis Said” (flute), and “The Old Horse in the City” (piano).   The set opens with a short introduction inspired by Lindsay’s own introduction to his moon poems, “To Gloriana.”  Special thank you to Rachel Ciraldo for insisting that I write something with flute and oboe so she and my wife Meredeth could perform it together.

This live recording is from the premiere at the National Flute Association convention in Washington, DC on August 16, 2015.  The performers are Rachel Ciraldo, flute; Meredeth Rouse, oboe; and Dianne Frazer, piano.

Feel so free (developed)

OK. This one is wierd. Random song idea that I transcribed into Evernote yesterday. Sometimes you just have to lay them out to see how they actually sound outside your head. And this one sounds way wierder than it did in my head.

Bracing for the fall

Perhaps not my most inspired ditty ever, but hey its been a day. Really this was just a layered guitar idea that felt a little bare so I treated it with some light vocal touches tonight.
