More than oceans’ grains of sand
but not of fingers on one hand;
more than stars that drill the sky
but not the pupils of one eye;
more than all of England’s dead
but not of tongues within one head;
a number more than words can tell
but not the clapper of one bell;
more airs than all composers wrote
but fewer than one single note
and more and fewer than all these
but not in Satie’s sonneries.
