Q. How would you describe yourself?
A. I've never really been comfortable with Artist or DJ titles or whatever. Perhaps "music obsessed" suits me better. Probably a more fitting description.

Q. How long have you been a part of the NYC music scene?
A. I landed in New York in 2007. I thought that was it. After Detroit, next chapter. In retrospect, I was just on a DJ hiatus. I guess I've been a part of Brooklyn's DJ scene for a little over a decade.

Q. Tell us about this mix.
A. I've been toying with the idea of doing a different kind of mix for a while. Juanita's was the perfect opportunity to showcase a different side. So, thank you. Most people who know me think Acid. House. Techno. Electro. Bangers Only! This mix is not that. I've always been heavily influenced by my 90's upbringing. A musically rich and significant era. The elements of atmosphere, mood, and spirit come into play for this mix. It's a bit nostalgic and sentimental. A one take, vinyl only situation recorded at home just yesterday. A stream of consciousness summer head nod for a rainy day, or a sunny one. Meant to uplift and inspire. It is necessary to keep our optimism and focus up with the music that moves us, and to share that. It is an extension of love and hope in our extreme times. Press play. Turn up. Enjoy.

With a style forged in the ’90s Midwest rave scene, Patrick Russell(@ptrckrssll)'s Detroit-bred origins are still very much on show today. Now based in New York, he has found a harmony between retaining his acid-driven musical influences and broadening his palette towards the deeper and more psychedelic. A @thebunkerny resident and Labyrinth (@mindgameslaby) Festival regular, and still a key figure of Detroit’s famed No Way Back parties, Patrick has gained what borders on legendary status within the international electronic music community through a combination of integrity, hard work and uncompromising ability to weave storytelling into his work as both DJ and producer. 

Like many artists, his recent selections have ventured away from the dance floor – with the COVID era offering a freedom of exploration that’s on full show in his Patterns of Perception 76. Of the mix, Patrick says: “For some time now, I’ve been sitting on a number of tracks around the 75/150 BPM axis that I’ve been dying to play, and wanted to do so without venturing into full-on techno or electro. This seemed like the right opportunity to present them, and also throw in a few curve balls while I was at it. Challenge accepted.”
