Hey guys, hope you’re all doing well!! So, crazy to think it’s October already, and sorry it’s been a while since I have posted anything new. Sadly, since the COVID pandemic took the world by storm, two of the clubs that I used to play at regularly, The Underground in Seattle, and Whiskey Bar in Portland, OR, both shut down due to the lack of business and financial hardships brought on by the pandemic. Fortunately for me I still have an amazing club in Seattle to play at, ORA Nightclub, but moving forward I will probably have less shows to record unless something changes. Just a fact of life I guess. So, on the brighter side, I recently took my first vacation since the pandemic and went to visit some friends in Germany, which was awesome. I had been experimenting with some newer proggy tracks that I had been hoping to play at a progressive house show, but decided to record a demo set and I listened to it nonstop while I was in Germany. When I got home I made a few minor tweaks and re-recorded it last Saturday (Oct 15th), and I really loved the way the tracks just set this certain relaxing, yet peppy, introspective vibe, and (for me at least) I really love to listen to it while driving. So, I called this mix “Autumn Drive”, as fall is one of my very favorite times of year, when all the leaves turn beautiful colors and begin to fall, and we get some amazingly colorful sunsets here in the Pacific NW. Anyway, buckle your seatbelts, ease back into the seat, and I hope you enjoy the ride.. Mark a.k.a. “AUTUMN DRIVE” – a Progressive House demo mix, recorded live, Sat, Oct 15th, 2022

On Saturday, November 5th, I was incredibly honored to be direct support for world-renown and beloved Trance DJ and record producer, visiting us all the way from Wales, UK, Richard Mowatt, better known as SOLARSTONE, at Ora Nightclub, Seattle. This was actually my 3rd time getting to open for this famous guy, and it was really fun to see him again and be able to say hi and get to hand off the decks to Mr. Pure Trance himself. I had SO many great tracks that I was so excited to play that night, and the crowd was incredibly fun to play for and at a few points were jumping up and down and dancing so hard that the DJ booth was shaking so hard that I thought it might collapse haha, that was really exhilarating. Such an incredible evening of beautiful Trance and Progressive, beautiful smiling faces and hands in the air, incredibly positive energy, and I was so happy to be able to make people dance like that; it’s one of the best feelings in the world. Opening set for SOLARSTONE, Ora, Sat, Nov 5th, 2022

On Saturday, December 31st, I was honored to be invited to play at a NYE Trance DJ event at a club called Opaline, in Portland, Oregon. This was a special show for me for a couple of reasons, 1/ Opaline was a new club for me, which is always exciting and fun to spin at new venues, but also, 2/ this was my very first time playing in Portland since December 31st, 2019, for the NYE Bash at the Whiskey Bar, a club that I’ll always hold near and dear to my heart and which has since unfortunately closed down due to financial hardships caused by the COVID pandemic, which took the world by storm just a few months after that show.. This means that I was able to spin with some of my best DJ buddies like ZOXY and Scott Vorel (Cooltown) down there, whom I’ve missed terribly over the past several years. I was also joined by a Seattle Trance DJ and long-time buddy of mine, Serjey Andre Kul, which was a lot of fun, and the show was kicked off by a rising young DJ in Portland, Shay Baca, and she kicked off the eve with a banging Electro House set that had the crowd bouncing off the walls. We had a total blast that night bringing in the New Year, and the crowd was so much fun to play to. I was SOOOO happy the way this set turned out, and I was able to play tracks on the slower, more progressive side by so many big name artists that you usually find in the higher BPM’s of Uplifting Trance, such as Ronski Speed, Nitrous Oxide, DJ T.H., Dan Stone, and Kyau & Albert, plus some of my current FAVORITE spine tingly and brand new Progressive House tracks from the likes of Vintage & Morelli, SØNIN, Hiski, and Laura van Dam. I really tried to select tracks that might capture some feelings one might be inclined to feel on New Year’s Eve, and it was one of those nights where everything just fell together so perfectly and I wished the night would never end.. I know I’ll be listening to this set many times over the next many months, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed playing it. Guest set for NYE 2022 Party at Opaline Nightclub, Portland, OR, Sat, Dec 31st, 2022

On Friday, January 6th, I was honored to play my very first show of the New Year at ORA Nightclub in downtown Seattle, and this one was for a fun Trance and Progressive local Seattle DJ’s night called “Illuminate”. For this Illuminate it was an all B2B sets (B2B = “back-to-back”, 2 DJ’s playing a set together) night, and I was lucky enough to once again be paired up with one of my favorite local talents, the lovely Janice Chae, a.k.a. J-Note. If you’ve listened to some of my more recent mixes you’ve probably heard Janice and I spin together before, opening for the likes of Paul Oakenfold and Oliver Smith within the past 6 months. So, I am always excited to B2B with Janice and I really love how her taste in music works so well with mine and we always have so much fun and many laughs up there behind the decks. It ended up being a great night and we had a really good turn out at the club for a “local’s night”, so it was extra fun to play to a bunch of great people whom were there to have a fun time and dance the night away. Originally this Illuminate was announced to be an "Anjuna Tribute night", but that changed towards the end, however Janice and I were already working on getting an Anjuna playlist together, so we stuck with our original plan, since we both adore the Anjuna record labels, and played a magical playlist of may of our more recent Fave Anjuna tracks, plus one massive golden oldie by Mat Zo slipped in there thanks to Janice and I really loved hearing that one again after so many years. Gotek + J-Note guest B2B Anjuna Tribute set for “Illuminate” at Ora, Seattle, WA, Fri, Jan 6th, 2023

So, I’ve hinted that this mix was coming on my Gotek FB page etc, but I’ve noticed that I’ve been gravitating to my collection of much older, “vintage”, Uplifting Trance tracks (early-to-mid 2000’s, before 2010), many of which I originally purchased on vinyl, some of which were only ever released in vinyl format, back in the day when I would hear something on DI.FM and frantically search the internet for it, when you often times would be paying $15-$30 bucks for a “white label” piece of vinyl to be shipped to you from Europe somewhere, long before the convenience of the Internet and paying $2.50 for immediate gratification to download a lossless file. Back in the days when Trance was still forming, when the tracks were 8-9 minutes long and sounded rawer and more primitive, but still some of the most spine-tingly stuff I have ever heard. Well, a couple of weekends ago I decided to record a classics mix on the CDJ's to listen to later from Dropbox (something I do once in a while for music to listen to in the backyard while I was BBQ’ing, etc). So I went to my music collection and sorted by date, and was frankly surprised how many MP3’s I had that had no date or other metadata because they were so old, so I compiled a list of tracks I hadn’t heard in many years, and this is what I ended up with. Truth be known, I did go back and repurchase many of these tracks in AIFF (lossless) format from Beatport, because some of those ancient MP3’s just didn’t have the sound quality I needed, but there still were several MP3’s used to mix this set from tracks that weren’t available to re-buy as lossless files anywhere online. This mix has been professionally sound-leveled, and preserved in the original WAV format that I recorded it in,  for that added punch of sound quality on those extra old files, but I also sort of don't mind the MP3's for the extra emphasis on that "vintage" (slightly crappy) sound quality anyway haha. For me, this mix really brought back a lot of fond memories from a couple decades ago, when Uplifting Trance was much newer and pure, still just coalescing and finding it's place, and the feelings it conjures up are pure magic. I called this one “White Label”, and plan to have a vintage Trance series of the same now. I hope you feel the same way as I do when you hear it, enjoy!! -Mark a.k.a. “White Label” a Classic Trance demo mix: 001, recorded live Feb 13th, 2023

Hey guys, well, I had SO much fun recording the first White Label Classic trance mix, and received a lot of much-appreciated positive feedback on it, that I AM BACK with another Classic Uplifting Trance mix for ya, with White Label 002!! I really dug deep on this one and used even more MP3’s than on the first one because some of this stuff is so rare it’s no longer available to purchase, and/or only released on vinyl. I did my best with sound leveling to make sure the recording volume is consistent from track to track, but some of this still stuff is just so old that it wasn’t great sound quality, hopefully it sounds okay. I had to take several tries at recording this and really had to play with the tracks and placement, but I think I got it right in the end, however I’ll let you be the judges haha. One thing I noticed is I heavily indexed on Ronski Speed on this set, but truth be told it was really Ronski’s sound that I obsessed with in the early years of building interest in Trance, and we have a lot to thank Ronski for in all of his pioneering and influence in this uplifting trance sound in the very early days, some of my very favorite stuff of all-time. Also loaded it up with some other golden oldies and rare gems and I really like the way this one turned out. “White Label” a Classic Trance demo mix: 002, recorded live March 5th, 2023

On Friday, May 19th, I recorded a demo set of some dreamy, relaxing proggy stuff that I have been listening to and collecting for the past couple months, literally to upload to dropbox so I could listen to it in the backyard BBQ’ing on a beautiful, early summer evening haha, the night before the Rinaly show at Ora, which was last Saturday (AND, a totally awesome time!!! My set should also be uploaded sometime soon). I actually did try to record this once before several weekends before that but I didn’t like a few things about it and cut the recording off midway through, but this time it turned out pretty cool, so I thought I would share. “Summer Prog – May 2023 ” a progressive house demo mix, recorded live May 19th, 2023

On Saturday, May 20th, I was extremely honored to be the primary opener for Japanese DJ and music producer, RINALY, at Ora Nightclub, Seattle. You may have seen Rinaly at one of the giant Trance festivals around the globe, and she has performed in renowned clubs such as Zouk Singapore, Colosseum Jakarta, as well as major international events such as Amsterdam Dance Event, EDC Las Vegas, Japan & China. She’s been producing Trance for the past decade and seen several of her singles hit the top Trance charts on Beatport. Rinaly in fact flew directly from this year’s EDC in Las Vegas to Seattle to play with us at Ora that night, and it was so cool to meet her in person. She was quite humble and sweet (and also very tall!), in fact on my last track I noticed something out of the corner of my eye and she was waiting at the bottom of the DJ booth stairs for me to invite her up, which was hilarious to me and very cute; most headliners just barge their way onto the stage and shove us openers aside. Haha just kidding (mostly) but I thought that was very humble and endearing. Anyway, since Rinaly plays uplifting Trance, 138-140+, the promoter told me I could play up to 136, which we rarely get to play in clubs. So as you’ll soon hear, I took full advantage of that and cranked it up to 136 for most of the set and got to play a lot of my favorite go-to Trance artists, such as Temple One, Ultimate, DJ T.H., and Alex Wright, plus a bunch of other amazingly uplifting tracks, and kicked it off with the brand new Myon remix of JODA’s “Breaking Down the Walls” which I was SOOOO excited to hear on the club sound system , such a crazy awesome track. Hey guys! Well, I’ve been working in the background on this next iteration of the “White Label” Classic Trance series, number 5, for the past month or so, and every time I record another one of these I worry whether I’ll have enough good material that will continue to motivate me to keep mixing these, and once again I re-reminded myself that there’s no shortage of amazing tracks that were produced pre 2010-ish, which is where I wanted to draw the line to keep this more about “classic” and “yesteryear” theme for the series. In fact, out of the 15 tracks on this mix I had to narrow that down from about 60 tracks that I still have left in the hopper from my original scan through my collection of the older stuff. Really happy with the way this one turned out, and I re-reminded myself about some of the hidden gems that I’ve totally forgotten about, like the Photon Project Remix of Andain’s “Beautiful Things”, that’s from 2003!!! I wouldn’t have been surprised if that was a brand new release, what an incredible remix of that track and from TWENTY years ago, and most people probably never even heard it. I also got to mix up a “dream team” list of some of my all-time FAVE vintage instrumental Uplifting Trance tracks, all back-to-back, like “Desert Eagle, “Northern Lights”, “Chime”, and “Aurora”, all on one mix, it’s almost TOO much Trance goodness in one mix, but I did it anyway.. I hope you’ll forgive me haha. I almost fainted from the adrenaline rush while playing those tracks together, such incredible memories and amazingly spine-tingly tracks, not to mention so many others, “Velvet Morning”, “Hold On To Me”, “Bass Society”, “Air for Life”, and I’ll never forget hearing Paul Oakenfold playing “Nice Guys Finish Last” but at a much faster speed, and was amazed that it was actually an amazing Trance track when played faster… And all the way from 1999, the iconic Fragma, and of course, “Gamemaster”, with the timeless famale vocal that helps me so vividly imagine our beautiful planet Earth a million years ago, so pure and untainted by mankind, so much awesomeness… Anyway, I’ll shut up an let you listen, and BTW, I will be opening for one of the artists on this mix, JOHN ASKEW, in July, so really looking forward to that one, definitely a bucket-lister for me haha. All mixes were either recorded live in the club or directly from Mark's gear (DJM A9 Mixer, 2 Pioneer CDJ3000's) recorded on a Zoom H4n Pro in WAV format, then professionally sound leveled post-recording, Voice ID Tagged, and  converted to MP3 by Chris Dececio Studios in the UK. EVERY single mix on Mark's Soundcloud was recorded live and in the moment on top-notch Pioneer DJ gear, not mixed with computer software, so they might not be exactly perfect 100% of the time, but they are "real", which is a standard of mix quality, authenticity, care, passion for live mixing, and DJ integrity Gotek is proud of. =)
