Crown Shyness is a collaborative project between ambient musicians encym and Wodwo. 

Since connecting in 2021, they have developed their music through a continuous exchange of ideas and sounds, constructing each composition layer by layer. This collaborative approach has blurred the lines between their contributions, creating a seamless blend of influences and styles that makes it nearly impossible to tell who contributed what to each track. 

The project draws its title from a fascinating natural phenomenon where the crowns of trees avoid touching each other, forming gaps in the canopy. This term metaphorically reflects the nature of this musical collaboration—each artist maintaining their unique presence while contributing to a unified whole, leaving just enough space for the other to inhabit. 

Crown Shyness is their debut album.

The Assignment: Record a piece of music in which a passing siren blossoms into something else entirely

There is just one step this week:

Record a piece of music in which a siren — such as that of an emergency vehicle — passes by, across the stereo spectrum, from left to right, but as it passes through the center, it transforms into something else entirely, and that sound continues to evolve as it proceeds to the right and eventually fades into the distance.

First layer (free samples):
delta-7-evacuation-siren L
haunting-siren-in-the-distance C
fire-truck-siren R

Second layer (free samples):
civil-defense-siren R
alarm-air-raid-siren L

These 2 sounds repeatedly travel throughout the sound space (from 90L to 90R). 
When they are in the center they trigger other instrumental samples and various FX.

This is an ambient guitar improv, using essentially two pedals & two sounds. Very quick editing for the intro, followed by two passes of guitars for the main bit and chunks of noisier overdubs later on, recorded at the beginning of the session and initially intended to be the musical "motif". 

This took about an hour and a bit, which is to say it's nowhere near where it could be so Junto participants' valued feedback on where to take this very much invited & appreciated! Thanks.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)
