the mirages bona fide depicts phantoms of modernity.  No matter how doubtful and hazy they are, no matter how arcane and obscure, still the very essence of these mirages is defiance of an outworntradition. It presents paragon of traditional modes and unorthodox, vigorous rhythm and free temporality.Having begun as variations within an old system, deviations from the norm eventually form new and rivalmodes. Likewise in music, tradition has offered a point of departure for new sonorities and timbres.

Creating new work is an integral component of all the VICO's programming; it provides a necessary framework for bringing musicians and composers together to learn from each other, in a uniquely collaborative process. Our annual Sounds Global Composers' Workshop provides composers of all ages and levels with a unique opportunity to explore writing for intercultural ensembles in an open educational setting, in which VICO musicians, composers and educators provide them with hands on knowledge and guidance. Since we launched it 12 years ago, the Sounds Global program has led to the creation of about 100 works by composers from across the Canada, the US, UK, Poland, and Iran.We congratulate the 2023 cohort on the world premiere of their new works at this concert, held on July 1, 2023 at St. Andrew's United Church in Vancouver, BC, Canada.

Birds-eagle

Suite concertante is a program suite dramatizing Iran’s history in the past 150 years, through the analogy of four Persian rugs. Each has a distinct social/geographical origin, recalling particular lives and times. ‘Kilim’ is a tribal flat tapestry woven carpet with geometrical designs derived from nature. ‘Sarouk’ is a delicate carpet, often made of silk, with curvilinear and floral designs of a more abstract nature. ‘Jajim’ is a nomadic flat woolen tapestry rug with abstract minimalist designs. ‘Gabbeh’ is a pile rug made and used by nomadic peoples, with designs derived from life. ~ Farshid Samandari

Farshid Samandari’s music reflects his interest in spectral analysis, and extended techniques. In addition his belief in Unity in Diversity stirred him toward utilizing different elements from a variety of non-western music in his compositions. His vision has directed him to collaborate with a variety of choirs and ensembles including Tehran National Symphony Orchestra, Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, Esprit Orchestra, Experimental Studio, Atlas Ensemble, Turning Point Ensemble, Motion Ensemble, Musica Nova, Nu:bc Collective, Standing Wave Ensemble, and Red Chamber Quartet, as well as soloists such as Karin Aurel, Ariel Barnes, Neal Bennett, Mark McGregor, Julie Nessrallah, Julia Nolan, and Beth Orson. His Apogee for the flute had won him Vancouver New Music 06, other half an aria from his upcoming chamber opera SunarcanuS was awarded as CUMS09 best composition and his coming home had won CUMS/CLC11. He is currently serving as the composer-in-residence for the Vancouver Intercultural Orchestra.
