The two latest reissues to spin off from our acclaimed Imaginational Anthem Volume 8: The Private Press feature the solo guitar compositions of Russell Potter, recorded in the last waning days of the initial American Primitive explosion.

A then obsessed teenaged devotee of John Fahey, Robbie Basho, and Leo Kottke at a time when Punk and New Wave were ascendant, Potter harnessed a similar DIY ethos to his own ends by starting his own label & self-publishing his first record, 'A Stone's Throw', while a freshman enrolled at Goddard College in Vermont in 1979. Assembled at the legendary Boddie Records in Potter's hometown of Cleveland, Ohio, and sprinkled liberally with references to his heroes, from the initial record label name of Fonytone (which more than a little recalls Fahey's earliest record label, Fonotone), to the arcane song titles and references to obscure rags.

Even as he looks to his elders, Potter's debut release nimbly evinces a complete mastery of his form and is all the more remarkable for one of such tender years, as only the chutzpah of youth can account for such moves as successfully grafting one of your own composition to one of John Fahey's, as he does here. There's a very immediate, lovely, and real homespun quality to Potter's chiming twelve-string compositions that puts it in the realm of those classic records that seem to simply exist outside of time.

Shortly after 'A Stones Throw', Potter produced & released a 45rpm single by an Ohio bluegrass band featuring the cult singer songwriter Bob Frank performing a cover of Devo's 'Mongoloid', before moving on to his second (and sadly final) album the following year, 'Neither Here Nor There'. Following an independent study with a Goddard College ethnomusicologist, Potter's compositions and performance only deepened on his second release - the recording quality steps up a little but loses none of the immediacy, the playing gets more exuberantly virtuosic -but then more reflective too, particularly on the tunes that are influenced by the gorgeous traditional Irish slow airs. He's still tipping his hat to Fahey occasionally as well, this time with an audacious electric guitar setting of the classic "Dance of the Inhabitant of the Palace of King Philip XIV of Spain."

Though these albums landed at a time when American Primitive guitar music's 1960s & 1970s heyday was in the rear view mirror, they absolutely look ahead to the genre's eventual 21st Century resurrection, anticipating both in form & content many of the same concerns you find in the great contemporary work of the last two decades by Jack Rose, Glenn Jones, Daniel Bachman, et al., and as such provide about as fine a stepping stone between these two eras as you're likely to find.

Gates and Variations rounds out a loose trilogy of records by Jake Meginsky for Open Mouth. Not an intended trilogy on Jakes part but it has become one to my mind. It has come to be how I listen to them and experience them, all informing each other, echoing and challenging each other and growing into each others space and light like a garden of plants that would never actually coexist anywhere in reality. Jake is always tirelessly reaching for something new yet I'd avoid using the word progression here. It instead feels to me like the last piece of a puzzle, or of a world created by some Jack Kirby demigod. Something has been completed and now all the pieces are interchangeable. The first can go last. The middle can be first. The whole thing becoming a universe looping in on itself with a multitude of entry points and not a lot of exits. These are dense environments where sections can move from microscopic to macroscopic, day to night and back again,  so effortlessly that its hard to tell if its intended or if something imperceptible within  you shifted the locus of yr perception. But it is all very intentional, something carefully carved to give the feeling of something, though unfamiliar and strange, organic and grown. Theres a sense of danger here like warning transmissions, concussive roiling rhythms and jagged disturbances. Yet also clear straight lines giving way to enveloping curve and staggering beauty. Supplant the beginning with the end with the beginning

Gates and Variations OM 52 LP - Third Gate _ Track 4 Side A

We’re pleased to announce our sixtieth release, which is a collaborative project between renowned musician and Montreal, Canada activist Stefan Christoff and Italian sound artist Matteo Uggeri, as well as musicians Claire Abraham (Cello), Fern O’Dactyl (Violin), Peter Burton (Double Bass) and Will Eizlini (Tabla).

‘Raven, Raven, Raven’ is a longform piece which originates from a live performance at Casa Del Popolo in Montreal, between Christoff and the aforementioned musicians. The ensemble performance was for a benefit show at the Native Friendship Centre and at a later date this was subsequently passed to Milan-based artist Matteo Uggeri, who had previously collaborated with Stefan through their mutual contact Vasco Viviani, owner of Old Bicycle Records. Matteo was tasked with the opportunity to deconstruct, rearrange and rebuild this raw recording as well as to adorn it with additional layers of sounds. Matteo’s own take on the original work took up a new approach to something that was originally live and flowing and once each artist had their own space in which to bring their own separate ideas, they then spent a slow period of regular communication via email during which the project gathered the momentum to eventually achieve the final results which have been beautifully mastered by Ian Hawgood.

'Raven, Raven, Raven' still flows like a live record, as if Matteo was there, present at this intimate live music venue, playing to the small crowd. Field recordings, samples and radio static blend through the individual movements of this modern classical micro-symphony in a seamless way. The album is intended to be gapless, playing continually both as the single track on the CD or as the split 5 movements within the stream or digital version.

The title to this body of work reflects back to how the original concert performance was set up to help support indigenous programs for people struggling with homelessness and poverty, with birds not only being particularly important in poetics, but also in different indigenous cultures too. It is often a symbol and this motif repeats itself within the recurring themes throughout this recording both within the music and the beautiful packaging, which features paintings by Chris Day and graphic design which Matteo also contributed to. Both Stefan and Matteo care deeply about human rights and the playful composition they have produced alongside this group of musicians represent this, with characterful glints of hope and freedom.

Reissue of the first The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation record from 2007. The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation is the much-noticed free-form, drone metal / jazz alter-ego of The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, the band formed by Jason Kohnen and Giedon Kiers.

Starting with free-form soundtracks to silent films such as Murnau's “Nosferatu” and Lang's “Metropolis”, The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble gave birth in 2006 to its first eponymous album. The downbeat ambient jazz of this first release was however only one avatar of this coterie, as demonstrated by the birth of The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation. The semi-improvised, dark, heavy, “sludgy” counterpart to the Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, the Corporation leaves all borders behind, focusing this time on mesmerizing, doom-ridden drones and melodies, combined with the jazzy grooves and melodies of the cello and saxophones. Recording live in Amsterdam in February 2007, “Doomjazz Future Corpses!” is a self-described “soundscape of barren wastelands, droning into memories of future's past”. If the The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble debut was paying homage to The Quay Brothers, this album awakens the third, twisted, twin. A snapshot of the band's free-form sessions, in which there is no solid structure or time frame but a focus on cataclysmic improvisation and feeling, this album stands as a captivating dirge of raw guitar drones, saxophone and trombones emancipated from their classic jazz boundaries and abysmal bass throbs. An highly disorientating yet convincing journey through the deep realms of murky drone jazz / metal, heavy, suffocating and unfettered.

Today I'm featuring a track by a Toronto based composer, Joshua Van Tassel, taken from his upcoming album, titled Dance Music Volume II : More Songs for Slow Motion, scheduled to be released in September of this year on Backward Music. During these troubled times, I feel like I keep going back to cinematic, ambient, and sombre music more and more. Almost every email I receive begins with "How are you holding up?" and it's almost awkward to admit that I'm okay, obliged to all this music that surrounds me to keep me centred, calm, and virtually connected to musicians that outpour their soul. Such is the case with music by Van Tassel. "Every day we are exposed to scenes of despair, ugliness, and struggle," says Joshua in the intro, "and I wanted to make a really beautiful album." The album is inspired by an electronic musical instrument named Ondes Martenot which is played by moving a metal ring along a wire (generating oscillations in the transistors). And "like the instrument that inspired it [...] the music is elegant and expressive, the score to a movie inside your head." The "Eternal Turtle" is a slow blooming piece, featuring The Venuti String Quartet, and Van Tassel on the electronics, piano, and of course the Ondea, the modernized version of the instrument.

"‘Eternal Turtle’ was the first piece I recorded for “Dance Music Volume 2”, and features only the Ondea. I had gotten the instrument about 2 months prior, and had been practicing every day, very slowly, and trying to play in tune. It’s very similar in tuning principle to a violin, where the slightest finger turn can cause the note you’re playing to be sharp or flat. I had started to experiment with more effects pedals as well, and created the ambience you hear at the very beginning of the track almost by accident withe a Chase Bliss MOOD pedal. For some reason, the sound immediately made me think of a giant, slow, and very old turtle moving slowly through and even older forest. I improvised the main line that runs through out the piece thinking about how this creature would move, then layered everything else immediately after. Compared to the other pieces on the album which in some cases took weeks, this one came out in one sitting and was the first time I felt like I had touched on the sound of the album I wanted to make. It was a lovely gift from a turtle I hope to thank in person someday." --Joshua Van Tassel

European Towns

French composer and multi-instrumentalist Christine Ott returns to Gizeh Records for her fourth album ‘Time to Die’, the sequel to the highly regarded ‘Only Silence Remains’ (2016).

‘Time To Die’ is a musical fresco in eight chapters, a sensory journey between the world of the living and the dead, for which the musician weaves a unique dramaturgy between contemporary classical and electro-acoustic music.

The title track picks up the story where ‘Only Silence Remains’ left off ... Like it’s centrepiece; ‘Disaster’, the beloved cinematic text here is read by Casey Brown. Ott seeks to offer strong sensations, without artifice, whether by the power of her compositions on the piano (‘Brumes’, ‘Horizons Fauves’), or by intuitive arrangements mixing her unique practice of Ondes Martenot with a maelstrom of Jupiter8, Monotrons, Timpani and Tubular Bells as on the first track. In addition, Ott captivates us with her harp playing on ‘Chasing Harp’, by her aerial singing on ‘Landscape’, or even on the airwaves on ‘Comma Opening’, which ends a triptych of songs after the versions published on ‘Chimères (pour Ondes Martenot)’ (NAHAL 2020) and on ‘Volutes’ from her side-project Snowdrops (Injazero 2020). These two previous records have been praised by critics, especially in the best records of the year according to The Guardian.

This expressive and spontaneous impetus, leitmotif in her musical production, takes a new form within ‘Time to Die’. Through the notes disseminated in an endlessly reinvented minimalist heritage, the interpretation is the ultimate musical glue allowing the pieces to come to life, thereby making this repertoire and its composer-performer unique. A universe where music - despite the album's title - never dies.

We finally share these few words from the talented American musician and videographer Fredo Viola, with whom Christine has forged long-distance correspondence since the first lockdown. Listening to the record, he wrote her these few words, which he allows us to share here:

"Stunning, terrifying, magnetic, delicate, painful and uncanny... It’s like discovering a bizarre object hanging very low in the sky, something beautiful but unfathomable, just out of reach. The way I see the album is as a series of quite cinematic meditations on the theme of death and dying, changing prismatically, up to that incredibly delicate and beautiful conclusion.” Fredo Viola
