Dixon spent his early days engrossed in New York's club scene, working at the legendary Tunnel, all while frequenting Timmy Regisford’s Shelter parties. He eventually earned his own residencies at APT and 205 and is now a head-turning techno producer who since 2020 has landed on labels such as Rhythm Section, Bastard Jazz, and Nylon Traxx. He also runs the monthly Shadows Of Tomorrow radio show on London's LooseFM which shows off his broad love of music of all genres.

His excellent 'Cause' is a robust and trippy techno cut with cantering and bulky drums. Edgy synth motifs ripple away up top to bring some late-night menace to the dance floor. The analogue texture, looped vocals and ever-increasing percussive intensity make this a real weapon.

First to remix are Jamal's old friends Pleasure Planet aka Andrew Potter, Kim Ann Foxman, and Brian Hersey. They flip it into a mysterious acid cut that sinks you in deep and keeps you there with elastic bass and all manner of whistles, stabs and freaky effects. Disruptive Pattern Material is a Michigan-born producer and DJ raised on Detroit techno and deep house who debuted to great acclaim on Rekids last year. His version is pure rave, with driving and dynamic drums, synths that keep you looking over your shoulder and a subtle sense of darkness. Last remixer Tyler Pope is another friend of Jamal and the pair connected over music in the mid-2000s in NYC. His take on the original is more serene with smeared synths softening the bristling drums with a sense of forlorn soul. It's a suspensory track that will keep you moving above the dance floor.

This is a serious package of up-front techno.

It's been over thirty years since house and techno music exploded out of South Side Chicago and inner-city Detroit, and most Americans still don't know their dance music history. In 1977 a DJ named Frankie Knuckles moved to Chicago to spin and remix disco records at an underground club called The Warehouse. Out of a fringe subculture that formed there - gay and African-American - house music would emerge to become one the biggest club music genres in the world. Meanwhile, young black futurists of Detroit channeled their city's post-industrial decay into a utopian machine music known as techno. In this Hip Deep episode, Afropop travels to Chicago and Detroit to explore the past and future of electronic music. Through dozens of interviews with seminal house and techno producers - including Paul Johnson, Vince Lawrence, Juan Atkins, and Carl Craig - as well as scholars, radio DJs and party promoters, we'll find out how two chilly mid-western cities taught the world to dance. Midwest Electric: The Story of Chicago House and Detroit Techno

Dutch composer Rutger Hoedemaekers makes his debut solo release with a stunning album that marks the culmination of a decade spent in the hyper-creative studio environment he co-founded in Berlin, including four years working closely alongside Jóhann Jóhannsson. Sonically rich, emotionally deep, and immaculately handled, 'The Age Of Oddities’ showcases a brilliant new talent, its cinematic eloquence bearing witness to Rutger’s experiences composing for film alongside Oscar-winner Hildur Guðnadóttir and Jóhannsson, for whom the album is partly a eulogy.

Whilst paying homage to Jóhannsson, ‘The Age Of Oddities’ sees Hoedemaekers forging his own sound and vision. It’s a bold and forward-thinking record, with a rich, hybrid sound seeing vocals processed and blurred alongside brass parts and a wall of strings shadowed by Rutger’s understated, textural electronics. Beautifully scored, immaculately performed and recorded, the album utilises the power of Budapest Art Orchestra’s 23-piece string ensemble conducted and co-orchestrated by Viktor Orri Árnason, alongside vocals (Kira Kira, Theatre of Voices’ Else Torp and Laura Jansen), horn (Morris Kliphuis), trombone (Hilary Jeffery) and violin (Una Sveinbjarnardóttir and Viktor Orri Árnason), with Hoedemaekers contributing trumpet, piano, keyboard and electronics.

Born out of a shared creative environment during a time of personal as well as social change, ‘The Age Of Oddities’ is a powerful and emotive work that closes a deeply productive yet also dark and heavy period for its creator.  It sees Hoedemaekers finally stepping out into the spotlight after many years working behind the scenes, revealing a hugely talented new composer who is surely one to watch in coming years.
