Music of the so-called "Renaissance", originally composed for lute or vihuela (an early guitar-like instrument). Played and recorded long time ago without any ambitions for "historical correctness" on a fat modern guitar.

Robert Johnson (ca 1580 - 1633/34) was an english composer and lutenist. His father John was lutenist at the court of Queen Elisabeth I.
Between 1610 and 1617 Robert Johnson composed for the "King's Men" theatrical company, providing music for William Shakespeare's plays. So he sometimes is called as "Shakespeare's Lutenist"

John Dowland (ca 1563-1626) composed this little "Air" over the tune of the ancient ballad "As I went to Walsingham", which was very popular in it's time. Walsingham in Norfolk (England) has been a place of pilgrimage since the 11th century. It was suppressed in 1538 as part of the Reformation in England, today it is considered as "England's Nazareth" again.

But the subject of the original ballad is about longing and flirting, such as sometimes happens even on the occasion of pilgrimages...

This "Fantasia" of the 16th century is composed for the vihuela (an ancient form of the guitar) by the spanish musician Alonso Mudarra. As its subtitle shows, Mudarra tried to imitate the special way, in which a famous harp player of his time used to play his instrument.
("Fantasía que contrahaze la harpa en la manera de Luduvico".)

Quite amusing are the annotations by Mudarra himself.
At the beginning of the Fantasia, he wrote "It is difficult until it is properly understood". And really funny but true, he set a foodnote in the middle :
"From here on to the end there are some false notes; but when played well they do not sound bad"

Though never been a real  "ancient music"-player, I loved  the pure substance in old, timeless jewels like this one. So please don't pillory me for that ;-) ***

Complaint ("Fortune my Foe") by John Dowland

Diego Pisador was born around the year 1510 in Salamanca/Spain. He played the vihuela, an ancient form of the guitar, also known as "viola da mano".
Pisador composed this Pavana around the year 1552. Expecting, that it would be quite easy to play he described it as : "Pavana muy llana para tañer".
