On Memorial Day Weekend 2021, "Nexus Artists" in association with Club Metronome presented their FIRST live event, since the beginning of the Covid-19 Pandemic @ their long-running "Sunday Night Mass" series and dubbed it... "EMERGE", an open Air showcase. in 2024, the "Friends For A_DOG" Foundation & "Burlington Music Dojo", expanded their Music Education program for young Vermonters titled "Learning To Fly" & its' offerings, to include an immersive learning experience and hands on recording session, in a state of the art recording studio.  Students were given the opportunity to record their music, with professional mastering and guided expertise in Burlington, Vermonts' own "TANK RECORDING STUDIOS".  

2024 "Learning To Fly" graduate & singer-songwriter BLAKE MATTESON, emerged from the sessions with two of her original songs recorded and mastered by the one and only Ben Colette, ready for the world to hear.

Blake Matteson grew up in Vermont with a love of music. Her parents like to say she could sing before she could talk. Around the age of 10 she started playing guitar but then seriously began studying the instrument at age 12. Her family is very musical, but her grandpa was the one that inspired her to play the guitar. Blake loves to write her own songs and finds that being able to craft her own lyrics and harmony is a great mode of self-expression. Blake loves all kinds of musicians - her biggest inspirations are Joni Mitchell, Bob Marley, Alicia Keys, Brandi Carlile, Adele, and Jewel, among others. For the past year or so Blake has been steadily taking her music career to the next level and in March 2024 she completed her debut recording at Tank Recording Studio in Burlington, VT. This opportunity was offered through the "Learning To Fly" scholarship at the Burlington Music Dojo, where she studies music.

Whenever Blake has an opportunity to perform, she feels this sparkle inside her that connects her to the love and passion she has for music. It is undoubtably what she wants to do with the rest of her life. For Blake, music is a love that will never be diminished.

BLAKE MATTESON - My Path - TRS Master V.01

The first Friends for A_Dog DJ camp took place at B.F.A., St. Albans in the winter of 2017, with middle school students.   The first day focused on Djing, the second day we taught students the ins and outs of beat making, sampling and production with producers Es-k and Loupo.  This is the beat we made with the kids.

This is the final cut from the 1st Friends for A_Dog Dj Camp.  The camp took place at Bellow Free Academy in St. Albans, where Andy went to high school.  The students received an overview of Hip-Hop culture and DJ'ing on day 1.

Day two focused on the ins and outs of engineering beats and producing music with Es-k and Loupo.  Selected tracks from Big Dogs' record collection were sampled to make this instrumental possible.  Day three was all about rapping and the art of being a M.C., with a post production session by Skysplitter.  The track features vocals by:  Lyric and S.i.n. Sizzle, cuts by Big Dog,  produced by Es-K & Loupo.  All students are featured on the intro of the track and Nat added  talent for the background vocals.

Profound Sounds Episode 20: Live @ Uebel & Gefahrlich, Hamburg

This is the track, we made during our second Friends For A_Dog Foundation Dj Camp in 2018 at King Street Center.  This track is special in so many ways, but one reason is the kids picked every sound.  And pressed every button in the creation of the instrumental.  Big thanks to Es-K & David Chief for the assistance.  Also the vocals are by Lyric & Konflict.  In which all the lyrics were inspired by the king street kids too.

DJ A-DOG (Andy Williams) was born in New Jersey and raised in Vermont.  

Today he remains a fixture in underground Hip-Hop culture.  His deep-rooted love for snowboarding and skateboarding culture shaped his musical diversity that was displayed in each and every one of his performances.  

A-Dog toured with Mix Master Mike of the Beastie Boys extensively and has shared the stage with the likes of Q-Bert, A-Trak, Craze, KRS-1, Chali 2na, Smif -n- Wessun, Prince Paul, Sean Price, Bobby Konders, GZA & the entire Wu-Tang Clique, Zion I, Beatnuts, Terminology, Statik Selektah, Talib Kweli, ?uestLove & The Roots, Hieroglyphics, Busta Rhymes, Bone Thugs & Harmony, Jurassic 5, Run D.M.C Common, Rob Swift & The Executioners, Slick Rick, Black Sheep & Big Daddy Kane to name a few.  A-Dog's genre blurring sets were known to cut up everything from jazzed out Hip-Hop grooves, Funk, Reggae, Soul, R&B and Electro.  He has been Resident DJ for Burton Snowboards since 1998, as well as Skull-Candy, Nike and Analog Snowboarding.

ABOUT FRIENDS FOR A_DOG  
HISTORY

DJ/Turntabalist Andy “A_Dog” Williams was the epitome of generosity, positivity and curiosity. His passion and innovativeness in music, skateboarding, and art earned him recognition as a musical talent and cultural icon. After Andy was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) in December 2012, his only possible cure was a bone marrow transplant. Because of Andy’s mixed ethnicity, he faced the seemingly impossible challenge of finding a bone marrow donor, with his odds of a match being 1 in 20 million.

After Andy’s diagnosis, his beloved community rose to the occasion by creating the group “Friends for A_Dog”. This group helped support him through benefits and bone marrow drives during his journey. With Andy’s passing in December 2013 from complications post-transplant, Friends for A_Dog (FFA_D) transitioned to become a non-profit to help carry on his legacy.

 

OUR MISSION

FFA_D’s mission is to keep Andy's legacy alive by encouraging the creation of art, music and skateboard culture through the sponsorship of scholarships, grants, and day camps for talented youth with financial need. Friends for A_Dog Foundation hopes to further the recipients' knowledge and expertise in these areas, while keeping Andy's generosity and passions alive in the community he loved so much.

FFA_D also continues to campaign for the critical need for bone marrow donorship. By hosting bone marrow drives and raising funds specifically for worthy organizations such as Mixed Marrow, we hope to educate others on the specific challenges that patients of mixed ethnicity face.

FFA_D annually hosts A_Dog Day on the last Saturday in August in Burlington, Vt, to celebrate Andy's birthday and disseminate his mantra of absolute kindness, profound appreciation for life, creativity in the visual and performing arts, and skateboarding.
