In March of 2018, German composer and pianist, Tim Linghaus, released his debut full-length, titled Memory Sketches. I have immediately connected with his sonic palette and the concept of capturing a memory with music [for preservation and materialization thereof], and have subsequently selected the album as one of the best of the year, in Music For Watching The Snow Slowly Fall In The Moonlight list. Brian Housman of Stationary Travels has also picked up this fragile work, and in his syndicated words for Headphone Commute acknowledged that “bring this to realization in a sincere and compelling way that deeply affects the listener requires tremendous sensitivity to mood and texture…” Of course, I tend to agree. Following the release, Linghaus appeared on Sound In Silence with a collection of “B-sides,” and then again, a year later, with a 30+ min album of sixteen vignettes, titled We Were Young When You Left Home (Schole Inc., 2019) examining [his?] childhood emotions experienced during a parental divorce. Today I am premiering a brand new track for you, this time is taken from Tim’s upcoming release titled Memory Sketches II, which, as you can tell from the title, is a follow-up to his debut, once again focusing on shaping and archiving the memories with beautiful sound.

The rhythmic journey of adolescent immediacy through rushing emotions, the discovery of new experiences, and, much later on, reflection on these initial feelings, are all conveyed in this very first track appearing on the album. On the fifteen successional pieces, Linghaus explores further recollections of heartbreak, repetitive school daydreams, and projected fantasies of a childhood long gone. The piano is occasionally gently cradled by lo-fi treatments, some strings and synth sequences and pads. It’s all rather lovely, a bit introspective, nostalgic and melancholy. Just how I like it… as if these memories were mine. Stay tuned for the full-length, released on the Japanese Schole Records on a CD, and Swedish 1631 Recordings on digital, on October 29th, 2021. This composition is the final version of the 'first' track of my upcoming piano album. This year I changed the tuning of my virtual piano  (Pianoteq5) from 440Hz  to 432Hz 'A' pitch. This whole new tuning 'thing' also changed me; it 'tuned' me, making me  'feel'  the music in a whole and exciting different way....hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do...

Masayoshi Fujita, the Berlin-based Japanese vibraphone player, also known under his alias el fog came to the attention of label founder Robert Raths a few years ago. Not only because the vibraphone is an intriguing instrument, but also the way Masayoshi treats his instrument and draws ethereal and layered sounds, is what truly attracted him to Masayoshi’s work.

Having released more ambient-based/electronic recordings of the vibraphone under el fog, Masa became more interested in the sound of the vibraphone itself. He started to compose acoustic pieces and released the first solo album under his real name, titled ‘Stories’, in early 2013. ‘Apologues’ sees Masayoshi for the first time use an array of instruments besides his lead instrument – such as the violin, cello, flute, clarinet, French horn, accordion, piano and snare drum played by friends, but arranged by Masa himself.

In addition to the mallets, Masayoshi often plays the vibraphone with a violin or cello bow, like on ‘Tears of Unicorn’ and ‘Knight and Spirit of Lake’. He would also place bead strings on the vibraphone bars to create an ambient shimmer that can be heard on songs like ‘Moonlight’ and ‘Swallow Flies High in the May Sky’. The latter was composed to let the clarinet express its characteristics and tell its story, whilst the vibraphone takes a supporting role. “The clarinet sounds very warm and soft and very ‘spring’ to me”, says Masa.

“With this album the main idea was to evoke images, atmospheres, sceneries and stories in the listener, the images that have accumulated in myself. At the same time it was an exploration of the unexplored beauty of the vibraphone, and also a pursuit of the charm of the instrumentation and the music itself. Erased Tapes releases a lot of great stuff and naturally became my favourite label of late. And I thought it would fit well to my music.” – Masayoshi Fujita

Happy Piano Day 2021 people! A new quiet filled the air last spring as nature had the chance to become loud again through lockdown. Instead of the sound of traffic, I noticed the chorus of life in the garden: the abundance of bees, birdsong and new blooms. I wanted to respond to this in music, with sounds equally as hopeful, light and delicate as the unfolding of life in spring. I hope it brings some joy :-)

I wanted the music to tell a story, or perhaps, the story to have some music, but that was the main reason why I decided ITBTWTL to be a conceptual album, something with a central message/melody that could be used for a film or a play. I invite you to explore the story and for you to be part of this musical journey I created with passion and love; hope you enjoy it.''

Hi everyone, my name is Gabriel Ruata, born and raised in Guatemala City, Guatemala, a small country located in the northern part of Central America. Ever since I was a kid, I loved classical music and always felt a special connection with any kind of musical expression. It seems, somehow, that there was some kind of rhythm in my soul that made me feel music in a special way. 

From among all the musical instruments at my disposition, there was something about the piano that called to me, maybe it was the smell of the wood, maybe it was the beautiful marble keys, maybe it was Chopin or Beethoven calling me, I did not know by then, but there was something mesmerizing about it. That’s why I started playing the piano at age 11; I enrolled in music classes and kept at it for 6 years, after that, I figured it was time I started experimenting with music on my own.

I graduated from school in 2003 and enrolled in Law School after that. After almost 7 years of studying law and finally becoming a lawyer, I decided it was the perfect time to pursue my dream: becoming a music composer, a musician, and an artist.

I studied Music Production and Audio Engineering at Harbourside Institute of Technology in North Vancouver, Canada in 2011; after I graduated from the program, I decided it was time to start doing something more concrete than just individual tunes, so I embarked in the adventure of making a music album.
