A history of xenophobia: from the goldmines to the rise of the far right today

Matt Golder is Professor in the Department of Political Science at Pennsylvania State University. He is Director of the Honors Program in Political Science and has previously served as the Director of Undergraduate Studies. He is a first-generation high school graduate and immigrant who grew up in the United Kingdom. He received his Ph.D. in 2004 from the Department of Politics at New York University. Prior to this, he received an M.A. in French Studies from the Institute of French Studies at New York University, as well as an M.Phil. in European Politics and Society and a B.A. with honors in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics from Oxford University. He has also taught at Florida State University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Essex.

His research focuses on political representation. In addition to articles in a variety of journals, he has also published three books, Interaction Models: Specification and Interpretation, Principles of Comparative Politics, and Foundations in Comparative Politics. Together with Sona Golder, he runs the CP Group, a lab-based research group that comprises post-doctoral, graduate, and undergraduate students interested in comparative politics. He currently serves on the advisory board for the Electoral Integrity Project (2013-) and is a team member on an international project looking at Populism and the Future of Democracy (2021-). Previously, he has been a member of the executive board for the Making Electoral Democracy Work project led by André Blais at the University of Montreal. In addition to being the chair of the American Political Science Association’s Section on Representation and Electoral Systems (2011-2013), he has been the co-editor of the Comparative Politics Newsletter (2015-2018) and has served on the editorial boards for the American Journal of Political Science, Comparative Political Studies, and the Journal of Politics. His research has been funded by Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, the United Kingdom’s Economic and Social Research Council, and the Tokyo Foundation for Policy Research.

Matt Golder - Far Right Parties in Europe

Episode 1 of 'A history of xenophobia - From the goldmines to the rise of the far right today' sees host Dr Irial Glynn (UCD) in conversation with Professor Lars Rensmann on the topic of demand and supply-side factors behind nativists' success.

Lars Rensmann is Professor of Political Science and Comparative Government at the University of Passau, Germany. Before joining Passau’s faculty, he was Professior European Politics and Society and Founding Director of the Research Centre for the Study of Democratic Cultures and Politics at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, where he also served as the Chair of the Department of European Languages and Cultures and led the chair group of European Politics and Society. He is a member of several scientific and editorial boards, including the Journal of International Political Theory.

His work focuses on comparative global and European politics; German, European and American governments, political cultures and systems; parties and party system change in Europe and the USA; democracies and crises of democracies in the global age; populism, populist governments, and populist parties in Germany, Europe, and around the world; the (comparative) politics of climate change; democracy, autocracy, authoritarianism, nationalism, racism, and antisemitism as well as human rights in comparative perspective; international democratic, critical and political theory and its contemporary relevance, including global constitutionalism and European integration; global political cultures and sports cultures; the history of genocide in the age of the Holocaust and its legacy for democracies.

UCD Gender Studies / Women’s History Association of Ireland (WHAI) presents 'Cumann na mBan, the Anglo-Irish Treaty and the Split, 1922; A symposium'. February 25th, 2022 (online.)

On February 5th, 1922, the Cumann na mBan convention was held in Dublin to consider its response to the Anglo-Irish Treaty. The executive of the organisation had already rejected the Treaty, as had all six women TDs. Cumann na mBan was the first major militant organisation to meet on the treaty, and the first to publicly split. Out of that split came an anti-Treaty Cumann na mBan who were actively militant during the Civil War, and a pro Treaty women’s organisation, Cumann na Saoirse, founded to support the Cumann na nGaedheal Government and the Irish Free State army. This symposium considers the important discussions, debates, impacts and legacies of that split, for political women and for women, more broadly, in the Free State.

The commercialisation of sport through history (Ep7 - Sport and Ireland: A History)

Maddalena Marinari is Associate Professor in History at Gustavus College in Minnesota. Maddalena has published extensively on immigration restriction and immigrant mobilization. 

She is the author of Unwanted: Italian and Jewish Mobilization Against Restrictive Immigration Laws, 1882-1965, which came out in 2020 with University of North Carolina Press, and provides the foundation for much of the discussion in this episode since it focuses on US opposition to Italian and Jewish immigrants in the late 19th century and early 20th century and outlines how Italian and Jewish communities in the US responded. 

Something that also informed the discussion is a special issue of the Journal of American History from 2022 that Maddalena co-edited with Erika Lee on the Immigration Act of 1924, which saw the US introduce an immigration quota system that substantially restricted immigration until the mid-1960s. Maddelena also co-edited, with Maria Cristina Garcia and Madeline Hsu, A Nation of Immigrants Reconsidered: U.S. Society in an Age of Restriction, 1924-1965 and she has a second related co-edited anthology coming out in 2023 with Maria Cristina Garcia titled Whose America? U.S. Immigration Policy since 1980 with the University of Illinois Press. 

Maddelena is also one of the scholars behind the excellent #ImmigrationSyllabus, an online tool for anyone interested in understanding the history behind current debates on immigration in the US.

William Brustein - Anti-Semitism in Europe before the Holocaust

Elizabeth Buettner has been Professor of Modern History at the University of Amsterdam since 2014.  Her research has centered on British imperial, social, cultural, and migration history since the late nineteenth century along with other European nations’ histories of late colonialism, decolonization, and their domestic ramifications.  

Key publications include: Empire Families: Britons and Late Imperial India (Oxford University Press); Europe after Empire: Decolonization, Society, and Culture (Cambridge University Press); and Decolonizing Colonial Heritage: New Agendas, Actors and Practices in and beyond Europe (Routledge).

She has also contributed to a number of edited collections, including The Oxford Handbook of the Ends of Empire, A Concise Companion to History, and Settlers and Expatriates: Britons Over the Seas.  Her recent book, Europe After Empire: Decolonization, Society and Culture (Cambridge University Press, 2016) examines British, French, Dutch, Belgian and Portuguese histories of coming to terms with the end of empires after the Second World War, focusing on the domestic impact of decolonization, postcolonial migration, the emergence of multicultural societies, and selective memories of empire.

Elizabeth Buettner - Europe after Empire: Decolonization, Society, and Culture

Dr Irial Glynn is Assistant Professor at the School of History, University College Dublin. He was recently awarded a €2m ERC Consolidator Grant for his study, SOS, which will investigate the history of boat refugees since the 1940s, asking who hinders and who helps asylum seekers on their journeys, and why.

1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year’ - Holocaust Education Ireland November Pogrom Lecture

To mark the date of the November Pogrom, Dr. Mark Jones gave a lecture - ‘1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year’ - in association with Holocaust Education Ireland, Trinity College Dublin and University College Dublin. The lecture took place on Tuesday 7 November in Trinity College Dublin.

1923 was Hitler’s breakthrough year. From the end of 1922 up to the infamous Beerhall Putsch in Munich during the night of 8-9 November, the Nazi Party grew from around 8,000 to over 50,000 members. In this lecture, historian Mark Jones examined the history of the year 1923 through the prism of antisemitic violence. 

In this talk you will learn about individual and collective acts of physical violence against Jews, the state-led deportation of Jews from Bavaria, and the role played by antisemitism in Hitler’s attempts to destroy German democracy a decade before he was appointed Chancellor of Germany in January 1933.

Mark Jones is Assistant Professor at University College Dublin. He was educated at Trinity College Dublin, the University of Tübingen and the University of Cambridge. He holds a PhD from the European University Institute in Florence and has held visiting fellowships at the Free University of Berlin and Bielefeld University. The author of 1923: The Forgotten Crisis in the Year of Hitler’s Coup, he is among the leading English-language historians of modern Germany and a recognized authority on the history of the Weimar Republic.

Mark Jones - 1923: Hitler’s Breakthrough Year (HEI November Pogrom Lecture)

Eoin O'Malley is an Associate Professor in political science at the School of Law and Government, Dublin City University. There he teaches politics and public policy and is the Director of the BA in Economics, Politics and Law.

His research specialism is Irish politics and particularly on the position of the Taoiseach and cabinet government in Ireland, though he also does work on the Irish party system, media coverage of Irish elections and public policy. 

He has authored over forty articles in peer-review journals. Eoin wrote a textbook, Contemporary Ireland (Palgrave Macmillan 2011), and co-edited four other books on Irish politics. The most recent book is Resilient Reporting: Media Coverage of Irsh Elections since 1969.  He is a former co-editor of Irish Political Studies. As a regular columnist in the Sunday Independent Eoin is a frequent contributor to national debates.

Eoin O'Malley - The Far Right in Ireland

David Art is an Associate Professor of Political Science at Tufts University (Medford, MA). David Art's field is comparative politics, with a regional focus on Europe. Professor Art's research interests include extremist political parties and movements, the politics of history and memory, and comparative historical analysis in the social sciences. 

He is the author of Inside the Radical Right: The Development of Anti-Immigrant Parties in Western Europe (Cambridge University Press, 2011) and The Politics of the Nazi Past in Germany and Austria (Cambridge University Press, 2006). His articles have appeared in Comparative Politics, German Politics and Society, Party Politics, and West European Politics. 

Professor Art is Co-Convenor of the European Consortium for Political Research's (ECPR) Standing Group on Extremism and Democracy. During the 2008-2009 academic year he was a Max Weber Postdoctoral Fellow at the European University Institute.
