Horizon 2022

I wanted to exploit the sound of one of my favourite folk instruments. The hurdy-gurdy is not heard so very often in the UK. What could be better than to use a medieval instrument for a leading-edge space opera like my essay into "The Vanished Birds"?

Several SoundClouders have remarked on the hurdy-gurdy. My own passion for it started in the 1990s when I found myself in a Breton village on the day of their hurdy-gurdy festival. We marched up and down through that village behind a band of 30 or 40 hurdy-gurdy players, with the odd Breton bagpiper and bombarde-player chipping in, as the mood took them. Somewhere, I still have my field recordings of the day. The tunes were simple and very catchy.

This song was inspired by "The Cold Heart" (German: Das kalte Herz), a fairy tale written by Wilhelm Hauff. It was published in 1827 in a collection of fairy tales that take place within the narrative of The Spessart Inn.
Although written almost 200 years ago, the described conflicts of mankind are still up-to-date, maybe even more than before. Preferring status und prosperity over humanity is something which has become socially acceptable.

She said: this song started out as a really cool percussion/synth groove that Gary came up with...he sent me the snippet and a BPM and we set out to create some piano that may fit the groove/vibe of what he had started...this song, like most of our pieces, just sort of evolves by a "back and forth" of ideas between Gary and I...once i came up with some piano, Gary took those few snippets, added them to what he had..and then created an entire piece around and with them...he amazes me, how he creates our pieces layer after layer after layer...i LOVE to listen to the tracks grow!!  We both really were diggin the energy and the flow of this track...and we had much fun laying down the vocals which we did in the back and forth style as well... Gary wrote all the lyrics and came up with all the vocal melodies...so gifted he is with both things! i love the lyrics he came up with...and i REALLY love his vocals in this...there are many layers of "Gary/Jaime vocals" in this...some very low tones from Gary that i rarely hear...but, may request much more often now  :)
I absolutely adore the music that comes out of Gary...and thank him (much) for continuing to share his musical gifts with me...and for grabbing that guitar and giving us all some of those AWESOME Phaige guitars to enjoy!  

He Said: One this about Jaime and I is we never know what we are going to do, and a Disco track has been on the radar for a while but we had talked about doing a cover of the Bee Gees "Stayin Alive" with a heavy groove..This would probably be more like Prog Disco...heh. Without rehashing what Jaime said I wanted to mention that when Jaime sang this track in the beginning she was sick with a cold and we got some tones from her that I thought sounded very cool.  As we progressed on with the track she got better but even sick Jaime sounded great. I also love the piano parts she invented for this piece as well. This one is a bit different but I think its still very much us. I had a blast with this one and I know she did too...
