About:
an Boddy has been composing & performing Electronic Music since the late 1970’s. Having fallen in love with the sound-worlds of German electronic bands such as Tangerine Dream, he came across an arts centre that housed a studio filled with reel-to-reel tape machines and analogue synthesisers. He very quickly started performing concerts & releasing three cassette albums in the early 1980’s followed by a further three vinyl albums. 

By the 1990’s he was regularly releasing music on CD as well as performing both in the UK & on the continent. He also developed further musical strands of activity with his sound design work releasing a series of critically acclaimed sample sound libraries & virtual instruments as well as composing an impressive roster of library music tracks, most notably for DeWolfe.

In 1999 he set up the DiN ambient electronica label which sees it’s 20th anniversary this year. There has been over 80 releases on this label with contributions from an international roster of artists such as Robert Rich, Bluetech, Node, Markus Reuter, Tetsu Inoue, Chris Carter, Erik Wøllo etc. Boddy has recently expanded the reach of DiN with the release of the two volumes of Tone Science which are albums focusing in on artists performing music on modular synth systems.

An improv done the first day I had been testing the excellent Extension to my Easel, designed and built by Constantin Papageorgiadis who besides being expert in EMS Synthi + Buchla mythical instruments is a super nice man and musician...
The VCS3 Card expands the Music Easel or 208 with original EMS Synthi A and VCS3 circuits : 
An oscillator that produces simultaneous square and triangle waveshapes with wide range and features useful modifications (synchronization, shape CV, hi/lo range) +  a noise generator with variable colour. On top Constantin has added a Random voltage generator modification module that equips many original EMS Synthi A, AKS and VCS3, unlike the 208's one, it's true random. 
I made good use of it, hopefully for your pleasure...

Various Artists Tone Science Module No.3 Cosines and Tangents DiN:TS03

Tone Science sub-label, from DiN records, continues to explore the world of modular synth music.

Following the success and critical acclaim of the first two Tone Science compilation albums, DiN label boss Ian Boddy has collated another nine tracks from musicians of varying backgrounds  working in the realms of modular synthesis.

Three of these names will be familiar to DiN listeners whereas the other six are new to the label.
Thus the album opens with a shimmering soundscape from American ambient pioneer Robert Rich who has previously collaborated with Boddy on three DiN releases. Well known for his infamous “sleep concerts” Rich here focuses in on the sonic details that modular synthesisers can offer the composer. The following two tracks by Caspar Hesselager and Little Ambient Machine show beautifully how a simple melodic sequenced phrase can be shifted, fractured and refocused in the analogue domain. 

The mid album section then features two very different tracks with a more experimental feel. Radek Rudnicki cleverly mixes samples of traditional Japanese music controlled in the modular world with great swathes of analogue synth whereas Eden Grey uses her modular in a very retro, radiophonic manner to conjure up the raw sounds of yesteryear.

The music returns to sequenced tracks with synth maestro Benge lightening the mood with the Kraftwerk like motifs of “Round #2”. The next track, “Angel”, is by d’Voxx who recently had their debut album, “Télégraphe” (DiN58) released on the DiN label to great acclaim. Once again they show off their skilful use of sequences with melodic progressions to create a captivating track. The album has it’s sonic climax with “Berserker” by Redshift which after a dark sonic intro section goes into overdrive with a huge Moog modular system going full tilt. Redshift is none other than Mark Shreeve who has been a long time collaborator with Boddy in the ARC project which has spawned several releases on the DiN label.

Finally after such a huge sounding piece the album calmly dissipates through the beautifully simplistic yet haunting “Hands” by Jogging House to bring to a close another varied and intriguing Tone Science album.

“Tone Science Module No.3 Cosines and Tangents” continues the journey down the rabbit hole of possibilities and sound worlds inhabited by artists and musicians working in this ever fascinating and varied musical field.

“I think about the question “Are you working with me, or against me?” a lot. Usually in regards to my relationships or most often my past self, but this time it was in the context of my instrument. There are sections of the instrument that are designed to work together, but there are points in that partnership where the two sides turn on each other and form chaos. For this album I spent a lot of time dealing with this chaos. Shaping it, fighting it, trying to reason with it. All the while asking “Are you working with me, or against me?” Eventually, by force and at times by accident, I was able to negotiate some beauty out of the chaos. Ian Boddy has been at the forefront of the UK electronic music scene since 1983 when he both performed at the very first UK Electronica Festival in Milton Keynes and released his first vinyl album The Climb.

In the 4 years preceding this event he had been experimenting at an Arts Council funded studio in Newcastle whilst at University. His early work resulted in 3 cassette only releases on the Mirage label as well as several local concerts. These early tapes showed Boddy gradually forming his own style through a long self teaching process in the techniques of analogue synthesis and tape manipulation.

After the success of 1983 he went on to release another 2 vinyl albums, Spirits and Phoenix, as well as performing several concerts throughout the UK. However it wasn't until 1989 that his first CD release, Odyssey, came out on the EM label Surreal to Real. After Drive, his second release on the Surreal label Boddy formed his own record label, Something Else Records , through which he released a further 4 solo albums as well as reissuing his 3 early vinyl albums and the cassette only release Jade on CD. Furthermore he released three collaborative CD releases with some of Europes finest exponents of EM, namely Andy Pickford, Ron Boots and Mark Shreeve.

He continued to expand his concert appearences which have now surpassed over 100 events with concerts in the UK ( including several more UK Electronica appearances, two shows at the Jodrell Bank Planetarium & two at the National Space Centre), Holland ( five festival appearances ), Germany and three shows in Philadelphia, USA.

Alongside these mainstream EM activities Boddy has also built for himself a formidable reputuation as a sound designer having produced a series of sample CD's & virtual instruments for sampling specialists Time & Space. In late 2008 Boddy set up his own downloadable sample CD company with the Waveforms series of sample packs. Furthermore he is also involved in library music having composed 11 such CD's for the publishing company deWolfe as well as producing some music for a computer games company.

Thus we come up to the present with the formation of his DiN label in 1999. Unlike his private Something Else Records the DiN label was set up to allow Boddy to actively form different collaborations with a wide variety of musicians as well as release other artists music. DiN has achieved widespread critical acclaim for it's adventurous outlook at the world of EM and has seen 39 releases with Boddy being involved in 21 of these ( five solo and sixteen collaborative projects ). 

In 2008 DiN expanded it's catalogue with a series of download only releases featuring Boddy in concert both as a solo performer and with other DiN artists.
