“Tome of Stars” is a 100 sonnet journey, equal parts art, therapy journal, and exorcism, both a celebration and an elegy, a single narrative arc tracing the birth and death of a relationship. All poetry by Stargazer. The verse and accompanying synthetic art and music are public domain, CC0, with no restrictions on use. Nothing is monetized. 

In the classical margam of bharatanatyam, the varnam is the recital’s centerpiece, its longest and most emotionally charged performance. In “Tome of Stars”, the varnam appears as the twenty-nine-poem section “Senescence”. Following the exaltation of Anthesis, the beloved as a celestial goddess, love now descends from the stars into the gravity of human frailty. 

This sonnet recounts two intimately entwined and ultimately tragic episodes—events that began in joy and hope but were transformed into loss through the severing of the poet’s bond with his beloved. At the heart of the poem are his long-standing, private efforts to commission a singular gift: a pendant crafted with the rare gemstone ammolite, chosen to mark her long-anticipated Arangetram, the debut solo performance of a Bharatanatyam dancer. The pendant’s design was carefully conceived, not only in its aesthetic form but in its emotional and symbolic resonance. Through color, shape, and mineral origin, it was meant to crystallize a history of shared affection, aspiration, and reverence for her art.

Yet, with the collapse of their relationship before the performance occurred, the pendant became more than an unoffered gift: it became a relic, haunted by memories of love and burdened by the weight of unrealized ritual. The grief is compounded by an even deeper wound as the poet was never given the chance to witness her Arangetram. In fact, even now, more than fifteen years later, he does not know if it ever took place. The silence that followed their estrangement has left him suspended in uncertainty—a condition that reflects the broader ache running through “Tome of Stars”: the agony of devotion severed from knowledge.

This absence is particularly sharp because, when he first met her, she had stepped away from dance, despite its centrality to her identity. He recognized in her a deep longing to return, and repeatedly encouraged her to take it up again, even amid the demands of a rigorous professional path. She did. She dances still. And yet the moment that was to be a culmination of his faith in the beloved, her Arangetram, remains hidden from him. His Indian visa, long expired, rests in his old passport like a cruel artifact, whispering each night of what might have been: the pendant placed on her chest, the stage beneath her feet, and the fulfillment of a dream never shared.
