Mike Orzek lives and breathes great music.  One of the most passionate and active musicians here on SoundCloud, Mike brings a deep understanding of music to everything he does.  And he's done a lot with many from around the world.  Serious on both the electric and acoustic guitars, Mike finds the right sound to fit in with many genres he records and performs.  A recent quote someone wrote during one of his fine solos was "Master Class" and that just says it all.  When serious musicians are discussing his chops and musical ability, that's a great sign of approval.  Happens a lot here.

Mike first approach me with a recording he had made with a funky tune I had composed Getting Down, asking if he could lay down some guitar on it.  Worked beautifully, and now we have done 5 things together - funk, blues, fusion, R&B...just about anything you throw at Mike he handles with ease.  

Mike's living in Atlantic City, on New Jersey's shoreline, but has developed a true world view of music.  A number of years in Texas helped shape his serious blues chops and now he's a gambling man.

Always exciting for me to have an opportunity to perform and record with Norway's brilliant fusion guitarist, composer and recording engineer Ronny Heimdal https://soundcloud.com/ronny-heimdal .  I started working on this tune late this summer when one of other favorite guitarists Justin Valente https://soundcloud.com/justin-valente sent me a funk track to collaborate on.  6 weeks went by and I was waiting for Justin to add his solos to it.  But I forgot the original track had come from Justin and then asked Ronny to do his thing with the opening and solos, and posted, without giving credit to Justin for setting the groove - or even the original idea.  SO SORRY JUSTIN!  Memory lapse!

With the new tune, Ronnie kicks it into high gear immediately on this funk fusion jam, and just doesn't let up.  Not only is he bringing his A game to make this come alive, but he's also brought his knowledge and ear to create the right sound and balance.  If you are fan of superb guitar, of jazz rock fusion, and of modal pieces, this one's for you   -  Go Ahead Ronny...named after a classic tune Miles Davis did on Big Fun, with John McLaughlin stretching it out over a modal groove....  Perhaps I should rename it So Sorry Justin:)

I was very happy to come across Jamie Rhind recently.  Jamie is a true purveyor of the art of American jazz and blues music.  This tune really grabbed my attention with his performance of some really great Hammond B3 style playing.  Not to mention the spanking clavinet sounds. Gettin' Down - Jamie Rhind (featuring Michael Orzek)

The brilliant Dan van den Berg https://soundcloud.com/danarchx and I are thrilled to share a tribute to two of our favorite bands, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever.  These seminal bands and their musicians were so important to the merging of rock and jazz, many having come out of Miles Davis' fusion band, and featured virtuoso soloists and creativity that had not been seen before with electric music.  Dan here plays both electric and acoustic guitars, and has added so very much of himself to this modal tune.  The tune features a repeating simple lick, with dueling aggressive synth and guitar solos that these bands pioneered and took to a very high level, with John McLaughlin and Al DiMiola on guitars and Jan Hammer and Chick Corea on keyboards. Here's another collaboration just packed with funk and great players from around the world.  Represented on this tune are musicians from Germany, Spain, Scotland, France and the US (3).  Pretty sure you will enjoy this one.  It's an original funk fusion tune that lets everyone here stretch it out a bit.  Germany's Mirko Borach (Stringburner) holds down the deep groove on bass, with Barcelona's multi horn player Santi-Caballero Mendez creating the head.  Solos from Mike "Land of Orz" Orzek with a fuzzed out wah guitar, Santi-Caballero smoothing it down on sax, Scotland's finest Ian Tait bringing it back up again with his signature electric funk guitar playing, France's wonderful keyboardist Julien Apelian on a great synth patch, and then New Jersey's fine jazz guitarist Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski bringing it home with his serious Scofield funk guitar style.  Wow.  So much playing here.  Great job guys!

Mike Orzek and I thought we'd break out some blues here, and created this 12 Bar blues to let off a little steam.  (12 am Bar Blues).  It's the standard form for the blues, and we've got a lot of guitar and organ in this one.  Mike has done so many fine collaborations with people on SoundCloud, and his command and understanding of the blues is impressive.  Some of that is from his years living in Dallas, Texas, where he lived just a few blocks from a serious blues bar and was able to perform there regularly.

Cissy Strut is a funky, New Orleans type groove recorded initially by the Meters, and then performed and recorded by so many musicians.   Scott suggested the tune and we've decided to style it after a favorite version recorded by John Scofield.  We've lined up some great great players to bring Cissy Strut to SoundCloud - Scott Nelson and Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski on guitars, Mirko "Stringburner" Borach on bass and Alpha Roots with his signature djembe sound.  Scott's got the first solo and plays sweet rhythm guitar over the track, Pinner takes the second guitar solo, and I follow on Hammond Organ.  What fun this was for all of us.

So excited to be releasing our latest original The Journey, with Dan van den Berg on guitar.  This one is extra special to me, not only because it again includes Dan's magical acoustic guitar playing on it, but also because a few weeks ago, while working on his parts for this tune, Dan decided to recreate the entire tune in a flamenco style using three guitar parts, and dedicated the music to me.  It was a huge surprise to me, and one that demonstrates the deep understanding Dan has for music,  his fondness for the passion of music and also for the friendship that we both share.  For our version here, Dan is once again performing on his gorgeous Joan Cashimira acoustic guitar. Some wonderful things happen when great friends get together.  Pinner, Stringburner and I got together here to present a downtempo grooving bluesy original, Mr Slinky.  So much can happen with the right players, and this one jelled from the start.  Mirko's one of the deepest electric bass players here on SoundCloud, growing up in Essen, Germany, and bringing that groove, that funk, and that perfect rhythm to everything that he touches.  Everything.  We've done so many thing here together, and it goes without saying that this bass line is the joint.  Taking the lead here is Mount Laurel, New Jersey's Stephan Lipinski.  Another monster, Stephan's got his Robbin Ford sensibility going, with that infectious wah playing and always tasty blues sensibility.  Together, these guys just kill this one, proving such a wonderful cross continent musicality - exactly what SoundCloud is about.  I've had so much fun mixing down these beautiful lines, finding the right balance, and getting this ready for prime time.  Thanks guys.

Since last December my workplace had got into a mess due to stupid senior management. Stress built up, which kept me away from composing a new song, though I had several gigs and vented my frustration.
Recently things seem to go better and I began to work on a new song, when Jamie Rhind https://soundcloud.com/jamie-rhind kindly proposed collaboration. I’m very glad to have such a superb keyboard player as Jamie play solo on my track! You can hear his funky synth solo in the middle part of this song.

The "October Challenge" of the FB Composer Challenge Club required us composers to create a theme music for the legendary Star Wars character "Luke Skywalker”.  With the history of this Jedi Knight that the Star Wars franchise has been established throughout the last 41 years, John Williams’ masterpiece score has profoundly registered in every Star Wars fans’ mind.  It is a very tough one for someone who is only a step above the novice level of music composing.  It is frightening for me to even try to remotely matching up the master level of John William’s theme.

Since the criteria of the challenge is quite open to any particular stage of Skywalker’s life, I’ve selected mine to depict the earlier to mid stage of his struggle of being a Jedi and a vital member in the Rebellion against the Empire.  From the day that he was born and adopted by his maternal uncle and aunt, to the day that he first saw the projected message of Leia from R2, then rescuing her from captivity; joining and fighting along side the Rebel fleet that brought destruction to the first Death Star, and finally facing off the inevitable duel with his father, Darth Vader.  There is a lot to be covered within 4 minutes…

I’ve been a Star Wars fan since I was 9 years old and I’ve always loved the first 3 movies and their music scores.  Therefore I adhered my style of this composition to John William’s orchestral form.  I wish that I have had more time to refine my composition and as well have the luxury to upgrade my composing arsenal with higher quality orchestral VST packages.  Nevertheless, this is what I can mustered as my submission to this month’s remarkable challenge.

The Legend Of Skywalker (FB Composer Challenge)

Trendsetting keeps within the spirt of “It Ain’t Looking Good” by taking it’s inspiration from people I meet at work and the neighborhood I work in. Two youth I know were really proud of having fake Yeezy Boost 350s. I have never been into sneaker culture but have had friends at various points in time that were. I had never seen Yeezys before, and don’t like Kanye's personality, but I had to find out more about these shoes. I eventually went down the rabbit hole and learned more about counterfeit shoes. It reminded me of a scene from the movie “I’m Gonna Get You Sucka,” where they were talking about fake gold necklaces making your skin green (at least I think it was a scene in that movie, lol). It also reminded me of a time I went to Malaysia and someone I knew was following lead after lead, into alley after alley, to get the highest quality imitation purses and watches. Capitalism. Consumerism. Well whatever. lol
