Always a pleasure to be jamming with Scotland's Ian Tait   https://soundcloud.com/ian-tait, one of my favorite 3 Scottish musicians - only behind Ian Anderson and Jack Bruce (sorry Ian). You'll recognize Ian's signature funky guitar playing, wicked sense of humor, outstanding wild graphics and great taste. Ian loves his wah wah pedal, combining it to create so many infectious compositions and grooves.

In fact, as a serious chef, Ian is also known for his tasty cooking. Enjoy these tracks we have done together. And give em a listen if you already have. They get better with age, like the fine wine that pairs with Ian's cooking....

Cooking with Ian Tait

Created this tune in the style of a favorite guitarist Jeff Beck, whose music with Jan Hammer has been a leading influence on my synth and keyboard playing.  All done with keyboards here....

Folsom Prison (Cover)

We had a blast pulling this together.  Its a simple blues/gospel riff on organ in F, that sets up some wonderful opportunities for heavy jams over the top by Justin and Tom, two of the finest blues players I have ever recorded with.  Tom has the solos with a more treble sound, and Justin boosts his midrange and bass.  Check out their SoundCloud pages if you are not familiar.  They are bad ass, just like this tune. Bad Ass Blues - with Justin Valente and Tom Adams / guitars

What fun pulling this together with three serious musicians.  You probably know Joe Bongiovanni and Justin Valente's awesome blues oriented guitars, and they stretch out here on this funk / soul / fusion groove.  Burning it up they are.  And joining us on Alto Sax is recording artist Matt Criscuolo.  Look for him at mattcriscuolo.com.  These guys just play their ass off here.  Started with an internet fusion loop, I added many keyboard lines to funk it up to the max, and we added these pros.  Joe takes the opening solos for the first four minutes, Justin follows, and we finish with all the guys trading off.  So much energy.  Positive energy here.  Put this on and relax. Created this tune to combine elements of rock and fusion, and was looking to set up soloing similar to what John McLaughlin and Jeff Beck did with Jan Hammer. How special for me to have been a part of this collaboration with the young and extraordinary Dutch composer/guitarist/keyboard player Rients Draaisma.  While my hope was to create a forum for a call and response type solo between my synth and Rients' soaring creative guitar ala John McLaughlin and Jan Hammer in the Mahavishnu Orchestra, Rients immediately turned it up several levels to create what we have here.   The head came from a synth solo line of mine that was then adjusted by Rients to meet the intricate and changing meter.  Everything else Rients did - the composition, the most intricate drum tracks, and his very deep soloing.  All  Overnight.  Wow.

In addition to being a fine guitar player with a tremendous sense of humor, Ian Tait cooks.  Both on his Strat and in the kitchen.  He's a very fine professional chef from Scotland whose specialty is pastries.   Not blowing anything up your Kilt when I say fine.  So when we put this together, Cooking with Ian seemed to be the perfect title.  Loved working together with him....you'll really enjoy his funky and tight playing.   Thanks so much Ian...great fun

Goin' Home - with Ian Tait / guitar

Bringing a soulful sound to SoundCloud with this one.  Lifetime recording artist, soul vocalist, saxophone and harmonica player Johnny Pugh sits in with blues guitarist extraordinaire Justin Valente and me on an emotional Ray Charles type slow jam.  What a wonderful surprise to hear Johnny's beautiful harp lines, which fit perfectly with Justin's raw electric blues energy. So much fun to have musicians all over the world play together, and this jam includes three of my very favorite guitarists and musicians here on SoundCloud...Tom Adams, Ian Tait and Justin Valente.  These guys can all light up a stage, and graciously came together for this funky collaboration.  If you aren't following them all you should be - you'll be getting fresh tracks almost every day from each.  Tom and Justin are both from the US (Austin and NYC), and Ian hails from Edinburgh, Scotland.   For our Summer Funk Jam here, we started with a very funky internet backing track, allowing everyone to dig in and do their thing.  You'll recognize each of the guys' styles if you've been listening to their galleries, and together it makes for some serious Summer Funk. I was amazed at how quickly Ian Tait took what I gave him and turned out this song.  I sent him the basic blues structures of this song and in 48 hours he had the lyrics, vocals, and guitar all on top of the track.  AMAZING!

Blues For Charlie is a dedication to the lives that were lost recently in Paris and now Copenhagen.  Our hope is that the emotion of the playing here touches people to remind them of the sadness of these horrible acts.

We Are Charlie

Blues For Charlie - with Tom Adams, Ian Tait and Kevin McCuistion guitars

This one is quite a crazy funky fusion track! A great bass player Mirko Borach aka Stringburner(https://soundcloud.com/stringburner )came up with the idea to cover this track by Los Lobotomys, a fusion group that was formed by Steve Lukather in 1989 with some of his friends and talented players, like David Garfield.
Mirko asked Jamie Rhind (https://soundcloud.com/jamie-rhind) and me to join on this one to complete the blend. Jamie brought his Miles' oriented synths, I brought my loud and funk rhythm guitars. We reworked the original, added different sounds and flavours to it, turning it into "Entanglement".  All of us have one solo spot around the main theme. Quite interesting is the turn of events with a more quiet interlude after the guitar solo, something we just had to keep in from the original.

Anyways! We hope to entertain you with this cover of a great fusion track and band. Do check them out if you don't know them already! Los Lobotomys...

I watched a Slash doc on tv and ian and i had been talkin about doing another collab... i suggested this one and he fuckin nailed it! Ol' karl Golden sure played a mean bass and drum on here!!!!!!!! it's the backbone for Ian and myself to do this SHIT, right?!?!?! woooo!!!!!!!

I remember hearing this at 8 yrs old..i had the tape!!! i listened to this song on the debut album by Guns n' Roses...i would balst it from a bedroom in a cabin i lived in in the mountains for 2 weeks with a coke dealin' whore when i was a kid and this song would make it go away! i loooved them for it! still do! more than any other song i ever heard from them!

Ian contacted me about doing another collaboration.  As I have always liked Ian's music I immediately jumped on the opportunity to collaborate again.  I listened to his music (as I do when I collaborate with someone) and wrote the basics of this song.  Ian provided some great guitar parts and provided the feel of the Showdown at Dawn. Showdown At Dawn (with Ian Tait)

I love Peter Green's style of playing, and when I found this beautiful backing track on Youtube (link below), I created this as a 'tribute' - though I don't normally record myself over random backing tracks I like how this sounded. I certainly don't claim to be able to play like him: his is the only tone that  BB King said gave him the shivers!

The track is  based on a classic blues song but I ended up using it to experiment with some new effect mixes from my Zoom G3. It is a bit long, but I love it(!) even with a bit of string noise and couple of flat bends etc. BTW anyone else with a G3 who wants the patches can download the basic one here, with a YouTube videolink showing the variations:

I spent much of the last month repairing/servicing/setting up my lovely guitar after I discovered the frets were lifting, so after three years of just polishing it and changing strings I had to get the glue and screwdriver out... 

Much swearing, mess and after a lot of patient scraping of glue off my fretboard(!) I am delighted and reckon she sounds better than ever.

The funkiest guitar player on SoundCloud is BACK, with this grooving original, Can't Get Enough Of You.  Scotland's finest has teamed up with Germany's super funky slap bass marvel Mirko "Stringburner" Borach, creating what I can only say reminds me of one of the all time greatest tunes, Mountain's Mississippi Queen.  But Mountain never had a rhythm section playing with this much funk!  Ian's letting me do my thing on keyboards, and you can hear me soloing in the right channel, trying to hold my own over this nasty rocking blues.
