Mike Orzek lives and breathes great music.  One of the most passionate and active musicians here on SoundCloud, Mike brings a deep understanding of music to everything he does.  And he's done a lot with many from around the world.  Serious on both the electric and acoustic guitars, Mike finds the right sound to fit in with many genres he records and performs.  A recent quote someone wrote during one of his fine solos was "Master Class" and that just says it all.  When serious musicians are discussing his chops and musical ability, that's a great sign of approval.  Happens a lot here.

Mike first approach me with a recording he had made with a funky tune I had composed Getting Down, asking if he could lay down some guitar on it.  Worked beautifully, and now we have done 5 things together - funk, blues, fusion, R&B...just about anything you throw at Mike he handles with ease.  

Mike's living in Atlantic City, on New Jersey's shoreline, but has developed a true world view of music.  A number of years in Texas helped shape his serious blues chops and now he's a gambling man.

Busting Out - with Ronny Heimdal / guitar

Dan van den Berg steals the show here on a Miles type modal groove, while breaking a high E string in the process.  See if you can find where:)  A special tune for us to toast Miles like this.  From the late 60s on Miles always had one or two super serious fusion guitar players on stage with him - John McLaughlin, Pete Cosey, Mike Stern, Barry Finnerty, John Scofield, Robin Ford and Foley. I was very happy to come across Jamie Rhind recently.  Jamie is a true purveyor of the art of American jazz and blues music.  This tune really grabbed my attention with his performance of some really great Hammond B3 style playing.  Not to mention the spanking clavinet sounds.  I added some spanking telecaster sounds to go with it, and Jamie liked it enough to allow me to publish it here.  Thanks, Jamie!

Gettin' Down - Jamie Rhind (featuring Michael Orzek)

This one is quite a crazy funky fusion track! A great bass player Mirko Borach aka Stringburner(https://soundcloud.com/stringburner )came up with the idea to cover this track by Los Lobotomys, a fusion group that was formed by Steve Lukather in 1989 with some of his friends and talented players, like David Garfield.
Mirko asked Jamie Rhind (https://soundcloud.com/jamie-rhind) and me to join on this one to complete the blend. Jamie brought his Miles' oriented synths, I brought my loud and funk rhythm guitars. We reworked the original, added different sounds and flavours to it, turning it into "Entanglement".  All of us have one solo spot around the main theme. Quite interesting is the turn of events with a more quiet interlude after the guitar solo, something we just had to keep in from the original.

Anyways! We hope to entertain you with this cover of a great fusion track and band. Do check them out if you don't know them already! Los Lobotomys...

Entanglement (cover) - feat. Mirko Borach | Jamie Rhind | Dan van den Berg

Here's another collaboration just packed with funk and great players from around the world.  Represented on this tune are musicians from Germany, Spain, Scotland, France and the US (3).  Pretty sure you will enjoy this one.  It's an original funk fusion tune that lets everyone here stretch it out a bit.  Germany's Mirko Borach (Stringburner) holds down the deep groove on bass, with Barcelona's multi horn player Santi-Caballero Mendez creating the head.  Solos from Mike "Land of Orz" Orzek with a fuzzed out wah guitar, Santi-Caballero smoothing it down on sax, Scotland's finest Ian Tait bringing it back up again with his signature electric funk guitar playing, France's wonderful keyboardist Julien Apelian on a great synth patch, and then New Jersey's fine jazz guitarist Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski bringing it home with his serious Scofield funk guitar style. Mike Orzek and I thought we'd break out some blues here, and created this 12 Bar blues to let off a little steam.  (12 am Bar Blues).  It's the standard form for the blues, and we've got a lot of guitar and organ in this one.  Mike has done so many fine collaborations with people on SoundCloud, and his command and understanding of the blues is impressive.  Some of that is from his years living in Dallas, Texas, where he lived just a few blocks from a serious blues bar and was able to perform there regularly.

Saturday Rio

Here's a classic jazz standard A Foggy Day.  A Foggy Day was composed by George Gershwin, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin, and introduced by Fred Astaire in the 1937 film A Damsel in Distress. Never saw the movie but the beautiful tune has stuck with me for a long time.  It was originally titled "A Foggy Day (In London Town)" in reference to the pollution-induced pea soup fogs that were common in London during that period, and is often still referred to by the full title.  So many greats have recorded this, including Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Billy Holiday, George Benson and even David Bowie.

This recording was all done on keyboards.

Here's another original, Get Funky With Me, with grooving jazz guitarist Scott Nelson bringing it home.  We've set the tune up as a soul jazz groove with rhodes and piano, trading off with Hammond B3 organ and Scott's super tasty electric guitar.  Scott is new to SoundCloud, hails from Pennsylvania, and is simply a superb guitarist and musician.  On this track he brings a definitive John Scofield influence, reminding me of Sco's electric work on A Go Go, with organ and keyboard player John Medeski's group. Here's an original reggae tune brought to life by three very fine musicians, Alpha Roots on guitar, Julien Apelian on keyboards and piano and Ian Greaves on vocals.  Alphio is so deeply rooted in serious reggae, and brought his great understanding and love to his riddim guitar work.  Julien as always has contributed sweet playing and ideas with two keyboard tracks and also the two fine synth solos.  And Milwaukee's Ian Greaves's sweet lyrics and vocals tell the story.

A Positive Mind

Nothing like the thrills of the '70s Muscle Cars.   How 'bout a '72 Camero...

'72 Camero

1971 was an important time in music, where electricity was changing the landscape and Rock, Funk, Soul and Jazz were all merging into psychedelic grooves.  Marshal stacks were often taller than the players, the players were higher than the Marshal stacks, Strats and Les Pauls were the axes of choice, Hammond B3 Organs and Fender Rhodes keyboards could compete for volume with the guitars, and the hair was even longer than the jams.   Woodstock was a recent memory, Jimi Hendrix had just passed but had moved into the funk and soul inspired Band of Gypsies period, Sly & The Family Stone was heating it up with heavy funk and soul inspired grooves, and Miles Davis had just released the seminal Bitches Brew fusion double album that literally changed music.  This was where it was at, with each of these musicians and bands being influenced by each other.  Great stuff that produced legendary sessions and recordings and pushed music forward with power, energy, groove and volume.  

1971 commemorates this time and mindset, and recreates the feel with friends from around the world who continuously exhibit this spirit, energy and hair in their playing:

A couple of words on each of the players:  ALPHA ROOTS - Alphio was the perfect choice to add his soulful African djembe percussion voice.  One of the most prolific and inclusive musicians here on SoundCloud, always speaking with a positive voice.  Check out his often reggae and dub inspired recordings.  RICKARD FROM - my favorite B3 player here on SoundCloud.  We haven't recorded before but wanted his beautiful sound and also wanted these other heavy cats to be introduced to his Jimmy Smith type playing.  STEPHEN "PINNER" LIPINSKI - one of the hottest jazz fusion guitarists on SoundCloud, bringing more modern Scofieldesque jazz lines and harmonies to 1971.  SCOTT NELSON - another burning jazz and fusion guitarist, Scott sound combines elements of the contemporary guitar masters - Scofield, Metheny and Martino - to create his extraordinary playing.  MARCO OVERSTEEGEN - no one on SC has a closer overall sound to Hendrix, and we needed Marco's fabulous rhythm playing and soloing to anchor this 1971 mood.  JUSTIN VALENTE - Justin's my favorite blues rock guitarist, and just had to be a part of this summit, bringing us that heavy electric sound of Jimi, The Allman Bros, Freddie King and Stevie Ray Vaughn.

How great to be recording here with Austin, Texas' Jeff Michaels.  Jeff is a serious guitar master, having 6 albums to his credit, and consistently pushing the boundaries of blues.  Heavy electric blues, funky stuff, blues rock, killer Texas shuffles and more, Jeff brings energy and soul to everything he touches.  So I asked him to join me on Dig It, an original modal fusion tune, and he's come back with fantastic playing once again.   Sweet harmonies with his rhythm playing and all those super tasty solo guitar spots interwoven through the jam. Dig It - with Jeff Michaels / guitar

Scott Nelson and I both love Latin music and Latin jazz, so here's Latin Lover.  Scott's https://soundcloud.com/scott-nelson-364333064 a world class guitar player and also plays serious bass here, helping set that deep Latin groove.  Scott describes this as a blending of an Afro Cuban groove, the piano a Cuban "Montuno" and the percussion more of a Bossa Nova.  I just love the sound of Latin jazz flute players so I've tried to mimic them with my synth here.  Scott's wonderful Latin guitar playing is on fire, and he just grooves with those deep bass rhythms and lines.  We know you will dig this.

Latin Lover - with Scott Nelson / guitar and bass

Ba Ba De Bop is what SoundCloud is all about.  A pure collaboration among serious musicians.  Joining me for the first time with a real clear trumpet voice is Andrew "Styrmonix" Styrmo, doing his Miles thing here.   Andrew's also adding some hip vocals, in fact creating the name of the tune, Ba Ba De Bop.  You will hear that in the tune in fun places.  His trumpet -- beautiful tone, cool chromatic playing, and drawing tension with every other note.  Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski holds down one of two serious guitar lines, driving the tune with an infectious wah rhythm track, and also some downright nasty nasty soloing, finding that perfect space between the bass, trumpet and his wah.  And once again, we've got Scott Nelson taking a big guitar solo in the middle section, providing a huge sound and such masterful playing.   This one combines so much of what I love in fusion and also in SoundCloud.  The opportunity to express oneself with other similar minded musicians from around the world.  Pretty cool ! The musical world took a huge loss this week with the passing of seminal fusion guitarist and composer Allan Holdsworth.  Joining me on this tribute to Allan is the uncomparable Dutch fusion guitarist Rients Draaisma, who makes a brilliant statement with his impressive mastery and creativity.

It is always something very special to me when the great Alan Schulman and I get together.  Al is one of the most talented and soulful jazz guitarists I've every played with, and he brings so much to this new original Long Time Coming.  Check out Al's superb rhythm guitar playing as well as his super tasty guitar chops and soloing.  Al's shared the stage and performed with guys like Herbie Hancock, Charles Earland, Wynton Marsalis, and Anita Baker, and studied with Pat Metheny and others.  Super talented in digital marketing, super creative and also has a world class knowledge of guitars, and as positive a person as I have ever met.  The real deal.  Currently Al is back from an extended tour of India with his wife Stacey Lynn Schulman, a jazz vocalist extraordinare, and perform regularly together in and around New York City. Just check out Rients Draaisma's magical fusion and rock guitar playing on this classic 70's hit.   Simply remarkable the ease which he navigates the groove.  Rients is one of the finest musicians and creators on SoundCloud, and such a treat to again be recording with him.  Rients has several great albums out, and plays with mastery that is surpassed by few guitarists.  A musician's musician.

Audric is the consummate musician, a musician's musician, and the top guitar expert in Philadelphia.  So I was again thrilled when he joins me here on our original, It's Not What It Seems.  With a handoff of the framework, Audric went to work - completely inspired - and turned it into this.   Not only the guitar, but additional keys, percussion, structure and ideas.   There's a lot to listen to here - from the spectacular initial guitar work to the harmonic structure and lines.

Originally from Chicago, where I developed a strong appreciation for the blues and classical, and moved to New York, where jazz and the fine arts are so deep.  Key musical influences include Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Jimi Hendrix, Joe Zawinul and Weather Report, Chick Corea and Return to Forever, John McLaughlin and the Mahivishnu Orchestra, Stanley Clarke, Scott Henderson and Tribal Tech, Jeff Beck and Jan Hammer, Mike Stern, John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Emily Remler, McCoy Tyner, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Jimmy Smith, Joey DeFrancesco, Larry Young, Buddy Guy, Santana and Earth Wind & Fire.
