Jamie Rhind's 2020 Collection

The brilliant Dan van den Berg https://soundcloud.com/danarchx and I are thrilled to share a tribute to two of our favorite bands, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever.  These seminal bands and their musicians were so important to the merging of rock and jazz, many having come out of Miles Davis' fusion band, and featured virtuoso soloists and creativity that had not been seen before with electric music.  Dan here plays both electric and acoustic guitars, and has added so very much of himself to this modal tune.  The tune features a repeating simple lick, with dueling aggressive synth and guitar solos that these bands pioneered and took to a very high level, with John McLaughlin and Al DiMiola on guitars and Jan Hammer and Chick Corea on keyboards. Uptown Groove - with Master Tony D / keyboards

Paul Racle has done it again with another beautiful collaboration piece for others to join in.  This one is a real smooth and pretty jazzy groove, with some sweet rhythm guitar and bass, congas and percussion, reminding me of the soul classic What's Going On.  One of those all time grooves.  So I jumped in on it with a flute patch - everything else is Paul's.  He's on the guitar, the bass, the drums and has created and produced the tune. We sure hope you enjoy it.

Paul's so important here on SoundCloud, always creating music for other musicians to join, sharing music, and producing some sweet instrumental and vocal tunes with friends around the world.  
He's a big inspiration to so many who don't have the opportunity or ability to create tracks, and to musicians like me who just want to jump in to enjoy his fine creations. Cissy Strut is a funky, New Orleans type groove recorded initially by the Meters, and then performed and recorded by so many musicians.   Scott suggested the tune and we've decided to style it after a favorite version recorded by John Scofield.  We've lined up some great great players to bring Cissy Strut to SoundCloud - Scott Nelson and Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski on guitars, Mirko "Stringburner" Borach on bass and Alpha Roots with his signature djembe sound.  Scott's got the first solo and plays sweet rhythm guitar over the track, Pinner takes the second guitar solo, and I follow on Hammond Organ.  What fun this was for all of us.

Daft Funk

It is with great sadness that Justin Valente and I are releasing a version of the classic Statesboro Blues just a couple of days following the passing of Gregg Allman, the leader, soulful vocalist and Hammond Organ player of the Allman Bros. Band.  Gregg was legendary, and such an important musical force with the merging of Blues, Rock, Soul, Country and Jazz, keeping the Allman Brothers band together and touring for over 40 years.  Statesboro Blues is one of their most famous recordings, released in 1971 on their seminal At Filmore East live album.  The Allman Bros. have been such an important influence on Justin's great playing, and so he's the perfect guitarist to join me to bring you this classic blues. Freddie's Funk - with Tom Adams / guitar

When I heard Paul Racle's recent Drops collaboration I knew I wanted to jump in.  To this beautiful orchestral piece I have added two synth lines - a heavy reverb lead sound and a marimba.  Everything else is Paul's great work.  Paul is a very fine electric bass player, creator and producer,  and one of the leaders of SoundCloud's collaboration effort. When you visit Chicago be sure to go at least one night.  Live blues on two rotating stages from 8p - 4a every night of the year.   And if you can play they often let you sit in.  People all over bringing instruments for late night action.  Named our newest dog Koko Taylor, who's photo in in the poster on the wall - the Queen of Chicago Blues.

We've got the great Daniele Turani and Mirko Borach joining me here on our original funk fusion tune, Ciao Bella.  If you are familiar with the seminal Billy Cobham album Spectrum, with Tommy Bolin, you will enjoy this one.  But for starters, congrats to Daniele, who about a week ago had a beautiful baby boy!  So between diapers, he was able to jump in with us here.  Daniele's a fabulous recording guitarist, with multiple albums out and a wonderful SoundCloud too, including many collaborations with top musicians.  Mirko - aka "Stringburner" - is a heavy, constantly in demand slap funk bass player, who helps set and lock this deep groove. One day, I suddenly start to think that this wonderful song is blues.  I checked the chord progression on the guitar.  I started to be confident that the blues three chords would be a perfect fit for this song.  After finding the three chords that fit this song, I checked the melody line.  I thought it would be good to grasp the vocal melody line in order to confirm the scale that fits this work.  I decided to record the process.  I want you to forgive me for this recording being pretty rough.  Because this recording is just a quick note for confirmation. 
I'm sure it will help you practice your guitar.  Those practicing guitar need to know that blue note chord progressions and scales are quite different from Western music.
Please take this opportunity to check the relationship between the blues chord progression and the blue note scale.

Welcome to my final release of 2020 and i thought this song was a good way to wrap up my year of recording  and music and film making .
For most artists and creatives its been a very tough year but i always see light at the end of the tunnel and this song is about keeping faith and having hope and to not stop what you enjoy doing and hopefully it entertains and engages those who listen ..

Once again Zurich's Paul Racle has created a super funky track and offered it up for collaboration.  I jumped on it, adding some synth work with chords and solos, and latin percussion.  But it's Paul's creation, which features so many sides of his abilities.  I'll start with this ability to create and share with and for others, as he has been doing this for years on SoundCloud, across so many different genres.  I've jumped in on almost 20 of these and it's always a blast because the tracks are so well done.  Paul (Paploviante here on SC) is a multi talented musician, including a very strong bass player, guitarist, drummer and writer.  Check out and follow his SC music:
