B3 Groovin'

The brilliant Dan van den Berg https://soundcloud.com/danarchx and I are thrilled to share a tribute to two of our favorite bands, The Mahavishnu Orchestra and Return to Forever.  These seminal bands and their musicians were so important to the merging of rock and jazz, many having come out of Miles Davis' fusion band, and featured virtuoso soloists and creativity that had not been seen before with electric music.  Dan here plays both electric and acoustic guitars, and has added so very much of himself to this modal tune.  The tune features a repeating simple lick, with dueling aggressive synth and guitar solos that these bands pioneered and took to a very high level, with John McLaughlin and Al DiMiola on guitars and Jan Hammer and Chick Corea on keyboards. In poker, you double down when you get two aces.  And that's just what we have here...two aces.  Scott Nelson and Mirko Borach.  Both superb musicians and guys who you put money on. We had to team him up with another master on bass, Essen Germany's Mirko Borach, who is well known here on SC as Stringburner https://soundcloud.com/stringburner.  Full credit to these wonderful players as they bring our original Double Down to life with me.  Follow these guys and head back into their galleries here for so many exceptional pieces. Cissy Strut is a funky, New Orleans type groove recorded initially by the Meters, and then performed and recorded by so many musicians.   Scott suggested the tune and we've decided to style it after a favorite version recorded by John Scofield.  We've lined up some great great players to bring Cissy Strut to SoundCloud - Scott Nelson and Stephan "Pinner" Lipinski on guitars, Mirko "Stringburner" Borach on bass and Alpha Roots with his signature djembe sound.  Scott's got the first solo and plays sweet rhythm guitar over the track, Pinner takes the second guitar solo, and I follow on Hammond Organ.  What fun this was for all of us.

When you visit Chicago be sure to go at least one night.  Live blues on two rotating stages from 8p - 4a every night of the year.   And if you can play they often let you sit in.  People all over bringing instruments for late night action.  Named our newest dog Koko Taylor, who's photo in in the poster on the wall - the Queen of Chicago Blues.

Having some fun with Charlie Parker's classic Blues for Alice.  Written in the '40s, it follows a wonderful series of changes structured around the blues.  Combines II/V/I progressions and chromatic movement while going through almost every key.  A real workout.

This little number is totally inspired by my cat Sixx Vicious (pictured in all his round glory). It starts out with some crunchy blues in a straight forward 4/4 groove, and than morphs into a slow 6/8 groove before exploding into a full gallop 6/8 groove.
Towards the end it slows back down into a shuffle rhythm that fades into a rather different ending...surprise!!!! It's Chonkers.

One day, I suddenly start to think that this wonderful song is blues.  I checked the chord progression on the guitar.  I started to be confident that the blues three chords would be a perfect fit for this song.  After finding the three chords that fit this song, I checked the melody line.  I thought it would be good to grasp the vocal melody line in order to confirm the scale that fits this work.  I decided to record the process.  I want you to forgive me for this recording being pretty rough.  Because this recording is just a quick note for confirmation. 
I'm sure it will help you practice your guitar.  Those practicing guitar need to know that blue note chord progressions and scales are quite different from Western music.
Please take this opportunity to check the relationship between the blues chord progression and the blue note scale.
