Penélope es una canción de Joan Manuel Serrat, compuesta por Augusto Algueró y publicada en 1969.

Inspirada en la historia del personaje mitológico Penélope, de La Odisea de Homero. Narra la historia de una mujer en edad ya madura, pero aun coqueta, que cada día se acerca a la estación de tren en espera del regreso de su amor de juventud. Cuando finalmente él hace aparición, Penélope lo rechaza al no reconocerle.
Se trata de uno de los mayores éxitos en la carrera de Serrat y con él se introdujo por primera vez en el mercado discográfico latinoamericano, tras haberlo presentado en el IV Festival Internacional da Canção de Río de Janeiro.
El compositor recibió en 1998 el Premio BMI en Estados Unidos por esta canción al tratarse de la más escuchada en el ámbito latino.
Penélope” habla de fidelidad y espera, en el contexto de aquellos años, con la música que se escribía y se escuchaba en aquellos años (finales de la década del sesenta). Penélope era aquella mujer que se sentaba a esperar en el banco del andén de una estación de tren el regreso de su amado. O al menos eso es lo que “dicen en el pueblo”.
“Penélope con su bolso de piel marrón y sus zapatos de tacón. Y su vestido de domingo. Penélope se sienta en un banco en el andén. Y espera que llegue el primer tren, meneando el abanico. Dicen en el pueblo que un caminante paró su reloj una tarde de primavera. ‘Adiós amor mío, no me llores, volveré antes que de los sauces caigan las hoja. Piensa en mí, volveré a por ti”. Palabras más, palabras menos esa fue la voz de Odiseo cuando se despidió de Penélope y se fue a pelear la Guerra de Troya.
Penélope. La muchacha “vestida de domingo” era la esposa fiel que espera a su amado y, junto a su hijo, soportan durante dos décadas la presión de varios pretendientes que la querían por esposa, asegurando que Odiseo había muerto. Penélope teje una prenda porque ha prometido que el día que la termine también finalizará la espera de su amado y aceptará a uno de sus pretendientes por esposo. Pero no quiere hacerlo, por eso teje de día y desteje por las noches.
