a playlist of mixes and such that I think are interesting.  A lot of jazz and such not all electronic craziness as I am a grown-ass man and sometimes that gets a little tiring.

Movement VI (Dance III): This fiery finale is both a parody and a deconstruction of typical 19th Century virtuosic violin writing. It encourages the melodramatic soloist present in all violinists. 

The Suite for Solo Violin (2015) is a work comprised of six movements: three Cantos and three Dances. The Cantos are deeply lyrical and emotionally intense pieces intended to present the audience and performer with a visceral and moving experience, which I feel, is lacking in contemporary music. These are contrasted with the Dances, lighthearted, yet challenging pieces that showcase the virtuosity of the performer.

Devil's Pie is honored to present to you a tribute of jazz living legend Herbie Hancock by Mark de Clive-Lowe, one of today's contemporary musical masters. More than a regular DJ mix, this live recording features Mark looping, remixing, and adding his own musicianship to Herbie's iconic music.

In Mark de Clive-Lowe's own words:
"The first time I heard Herbie Hancock was the Miles live album My Funny Valentine/Four and More. It was the first time I'd heard that era jazz music and I remember being so blown away with the way Herbie and Tony Williams played together and interacted on that concert. That was the start of a deep admiration and love for the art, creativity and music of Herbie Hancock. I consumed everything I could that he turned his hand to - all of his work with Miles, his own solo records for Blue Note, sideman recordings with every jazz great in every decade since the 60s, his Mwandishi experimental crossover work, the Headhunters deep funk - there's nothing the man could not do. As a pianist he's the ultimate - harmonically so rich and inventive, melodically so lyrical, rhythmically so damn hip. I've been fortunate to see him play on numerous occasions all over the world. The first time was the VSOP band live in Japan along with Wayne Shorter, Wallace Roney, Ron Carter and Tony Williams. I was 17 at the time and can't really fully explain how amazing that was to me. He's one of my biggest inspirations and influences and through his huge body of work, a true musical mentor. In being asked to put together a tribute set, it was the perfect opportunity to go back through decades of his work and pick moments that I really love. I wanted to do more than just spin a set of tunes though, I wanted to take those moments and sample them, flip them, perform a live mixtape. It was the perfect way to share the man's music and how I feel about it. Enjoy!"

I also hear new stuff that I hadn’t noticed before when I listen to his music - the track with Jack Wilson that opens the mix up is so heavy and cosmic for its time, and I’d forgotten about the track with Wayne Henderson! There are so many great albums out there including the 2 Virgin Ubiquities BBE put out... We could devote a whole week of radio programmes to Roy, his archive is so large… 

He is the key to all things between jazz, soul, disco and hip hop…. Thank you roy for all the music...

Roy Ayers 75th Birthday Mix

Marshall Applewhite Live In Bordeaux (first Hour)

"The Magician Variations" is based on a theme presented in the middle of “Uranus: The Magician” from Gustav Holst’s monumental work The Planets, now in the Public Domain. This variations set begins with a more-or-less transcription of Holst’s theme for soprano saxophone and piano, opened by Holst’s musical signature, GSAH in German notation (G-E flat-A-B in English notation), which acts as the harmonic springboard for the entire piece. The first variation is fiery and technically quite challenging. The second variation is much slower and more ethereal but still contains the energy inherent in the theme. The third variation for solo piano is dissonant and crazed—a quartal, quintal, and chromatic treatment of the theme. The last variation is quite exuberant and recalls material from earlier in the piece near the end.

The Magician Variations (for Soprano Saxophone and Piano)

Kaitlyn Wagner (b. 1993) is a promising young composer whose works have been performed by the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Freya String Quartet, Dr. JW Turner (President-Elect of the College Music Society), the Oasis Saxophone Quartet, violinist Sarah Plum, and a variety of musicians hailing from Singapore and the Ukraine to students at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. 
    
In 2013, Kaitlyn was the youngest featured composer at the Charlotte New Music Festival, where her piece Kings of Infinite Space was performed by the Pittsburgh-based Freya String Quartet, and in 2014 she attended the Bowdoin International Music Festival, where she studied extensively with Samuel Adler. 

Her piece for Moog Model 12, Korg Analog Sequencer, & live electronics, "I, Philip" has been performed at both the 2015 National Student Music Event and as a part of New Music Greensboro. The piece as been recognized by the Bob Moog Foundation, as well as three journalistic publications: the News & Record, UNCG Campus Weekly, and The Carolinian. 

Kaitlyn's long-term teachers have included Randy Woolf, Alejandro Rutty, Mark Engebretson, Steven Bryant, Derek Bermel, and Samuel Adler. 

She is a rising senior at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she studies with Alejandro Rutty and Mark Engebretson, as well as privately with Steven Bryant.
