When I wrote this song at the end of 2020, I was staying in my childhood bedroom in Wisconsin, nursing the wounds of a terrible breakup. I felt completely alone, realizing that some of our mutual friends weren’t as close to me as I thought. (Later, when I booted up my computer, I found his iMessages synced to my iCloud and read some hurtful texts between him and “our friends.”) I was virtually homeless, having driven cross-country, feeling utterly abandoned when I received an email from him. His words lacked genuine accountability and only added salt to the wound, showing he still couldn’t see or acknowledge the pain he caused me. Sitting on my bedroom floor, I wanted to clap back in an email response, but I knew nothing would get through. My ex was no longer someone I could trust to hear me. I was angry and deeply hurt. I realized that no response was louder than any righteous response I could come up with, but I still needed an outlet…

Back in my childhood home, I had a private teenage rebellion. I got in touch with my teen angst, sneaking off to buy cigarettes and driving a town away, blasting Amy Winehouse, Fiona Apple, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow— the women who raised me in my teens. I would type out lyrics in my phone notes, order a coffee from the cafe I worked at in high school, and sit in the parking lot, highly caffeinated and chain-smoking cigarettes. And then with my travel guitar in the front seat of my Toyota Corolla, I wrote songs day after day until I had an entire album, showing all the stages of grief. This is just one of the songs from that album, representing the anger part of the process.

“White Flag” was his attempt at an olive branch. 🏳️🕊️ But I assure you, all I could see was Red. 🚩
