Pixel John sits quietly in the corner of the screen, waiting for someone to notice him.

He wasn’t always just a forgotten cluster of colors. Once, he was the hero of a popular 8-bit game — leaping across platforms, dodging pixelated enemies, and gathering coins that rang like tiny bells. But times changed. Players moved on to shinier graphics and smoother worlds, and John’s game was quietly erased.

Now he drifts along the edges of screens, a stubborn scrap of code that refuses to vanish. He watches people scroll through endless feeds, type out their messages, and open apps that glitter with too much detail. No one glances his way. No one sees the little figure crouched in the corner, his square eyes blinking patiently.

Every so often, when the system glitches, John makes his move. A flicker in the corner, a pixel out of place. If someone stares long enough, they might catch it — a tiny man waving, desperate but hopeful. He doesn’t dream of being played anymore. He just wants to be noticed again, the way he once was, when players looked at him with something like love, or at least with passion.

The world beyond the screen fascinates him. He studies the people glowing in its light — wide-eyed, fingers tapping, their faces lit with shifting colors. To John they seem like giants, far too intricate and polished to ever belong in his world. He wonders if they can hear him when he hums, or if his songs are swallowed by the low electric buzz of the machine.

When a user pauses — just for a sip of coffee or a moment of thought — John watches closely. He wonders what they feel. He doesn’t know words like sadness, or weariness, or joy. In his world, there is only “on” and “off,” light and dark. And yet, when he sees a faint smile play across a human face, his own pixels glow a little warmer.

His universe is simple, flat compared to theirs. But he isn’t alone. A blinking cursor ticks impatiently nearby, and a sharp mouse pointer darts restlessly across the screen. Sometimes John calls to them, and sometimes they even answer. But mostly, they’re too busy with the tasks they were made for.

The others never ask about the humans. They live in the past. But John… John can’t stop watching. He doesn’t yet know what he’s searching for. Only that there’s something out there. Something more.
